Amazing how this teacher explains patterns. I am classical piano teacher who learned to play only what is written on the paper, so I am trying to learn comping by myself. I've spent hours on UA-cam trying to find a pedagogical tutorial and, so far, I have seen nothing like Sandra's. Her fine skills explaining simple to complex patterns in a step-by-step manner is unique.
Yay, just what I needed. Sometimes, I struggle to come up with more ideas during those repetitive times. This is so helpful. I'm looking forward to more ideas and more videos. Thanks, Sandra!
sorry for the late response, for i am in china and need a vpn to see this. i am not a worship keyboardist but love keyboard playing. are you? it would be a great experience to play in the church. btw, your video really inspired me and right now i am keeping learning piano accompaniment from books.
+Sandra Chen hi Chuxiong! Thanks so much for your awesome comment from some time back - I'm excited to announce that you might be very interested to learn at the Inspired Keys Academy which has just opened its doors! You can learn much more over there, be sure to check it out at inspiredkeys.com/join ! :)
Yet by the time I'm seeing it, there are 69 dislikes?? People are ridiculous! Thank you for making these videos, you've been a big help to me!! God bless
I´m searching like an hour, and this is the very first video seriously to take. You are intelligent, eloquent and you play on a real acoustic piano with real piano sound. Thank you so much.
I'm working on playing and singing one of my songs and this will help a lot though I don't play well like you I can probably get to tip 2 and back to 1. 3 will have to wait! I'm a song writer and guitarist but working on my piano skills so thanks, you beautifully!
This was great but what I would really benefit is a tutorial on how to do what you did in step 3, it's something I really struggle with. If you could make a video about that it would be great
Exactly what I was thinking. I might be able to figure what what you were playing in part 3 by slowing the speed down to 25%, but a separate lesson would be nice. Part 2 was very good, interesting that you threw in some 2nds and 4ths and sometimes played 2 notes simultaneously.
Dandanz3112 I need help... I want to know how to find the chords of any known melody and I want to know how to play accompaniment for any song on the piano? On this video what she is playing with her left and right hand? is it melody or chords or arpeggio?
Awesome tutorial!!!! My ears always get stale & I end up with lots of parts to my compositions, but lacked the knowledge to build in a flowing motion. I always used the root octave on the left hand whether I kept it stationary or created a beat with it. Thanks for the your theory, musicianship, time & gift of teaching - you had my subsc from the top !!!!
Thank you SO MUCH Paula for your great support and encouragement!!! Let me know if I can be of any further help to take you to your next levels of worship keys playing. Do consider joining the Inspired Keys Academy as well if you'd like even more theory foundations :) inspiredkeys.com/join
Tell us which chor you are actually using showing in video atleast and also like to see highlight notes on piano But your video is remarkably diffetent and love it
You are good at this. Your tutorials also contain many of the same elements and are kept interesting. Specifically, the pace is good, the content is interesting, you inject an example performance frequently, the sound of the piano is good, your commentary is insightful, you have a pleasant demeanor and with all of this you take full advantage of the video medium.
I didn't even know this was a thing, but I kind of discovered this independently (newbie to piano), but thank you for showing me how to amp it up and tone it down! Much appreciated!
+hnsmusic Awesome, Jake! Thank you for the kind words! In your opinion, what are some ways worship keyboardists can do better to make a better worship sound?
+Sandra Chen Lau Sounds that are both percussive and atmospheric. An example being a blend of piano,ep,bell and a pad sound. The are some things you cant do with a pad layered in also there are areas of the keyboard that should be avoided. I may post a video on this. Ill certainly give your channel a mention. Again...great channel. Ive been blessed.
+hnsmusic sounds great. I do the same - percussive being piano, Rhodes, bell, synths, atmospheric being pads. I plan to do up a video on mainstage soon ! Looking forward to your video too!
+Joydeep Sengupta Hey Joydeep, your comment made my day. Be sure to subscribe to the channel and my email list (you can do so at inspiredkeyboardist.com) because new teaching episodes are going to be released weekly starting April (this month!). Sandra Chen I bought your 31DTBW book and find it very extremely helpful. So glad you’re doing this online. Will be signing up for the video lessons. And I just realized I spelt your name wrong! Sorry abt that😳
Really really glad the Ebook helped, Mei Lee! If you found the e-book helpful, I'd love it if you could write a testimony for this e-book. My goal is to receive 5 testimonials, and it will really mean the world to me to receive your testimony about how this e-book has made a difference in your worship keys playing. Just reply this email with a few sentences letting me know how this e-book helped you. To help you get started, here are a few ways you could craft the testimony: "The 31DBWKP E-Book has helped me to..." "I recommend buying the 31DBWKP E-Book because..." "My playing is now... thank to the 31DBWKP E-Book!" Thank you so much in advance, Mei Lee!
Hi Sandra, thank you so much for your videos! I am just a beginner in playing piano. I learnt major chords and minor chords. I have been watching your video but many times I do not quite understand. I wonder if you could give me tips what to do next please. God bless.
Hi Chrystal! (Love your name!) Thank you for your kind words! I'm proud that you are being proactive about your piano playing and that you know major and minor chords - what a great beginning step! My best tip for you is to start learning in a systematic, organized fashion with some committed tutoring. And that's exactly what the Inspired Keys Academy (inspiredkeys.com/join) can do for you. contrast, contour and context' this video helpful for orchestral writing, too; I like to go back to a really basic presentation because it clears the mind; the only time when fundamentalism is useful.
+Ian Chelsi Laus Hi Ian, thanks so much for your kind words! Yes the idea of my videos is to equip and inspire great people like you to play! Are you a worship keyboardist too?
Thank you so much Ethan! What kind of content would you like me to create going forward? I'm wondering if I should create more song-specific tutorials, or skill-specific tutorials?
How about a fast rythm songs? I am making my own music right now using guitar but when i play it on the piano i really have no idea how to spice the chords up. I'd be happy to receive some advices.
Hi Rizky! For fast rhythm songs you might want to comp based on a main rhythm idea. I'm thinking of songs like This Is What You Came For (Calvin Harris), etc. To learn more, I'll be most happy to teach you in-depth over at the Inspired Keys Academy (inspiredkeys.com/join), check out the membership! :D
Hi Haziq! This takes practice. Try just handling the rhythms alone. Pat the rhythms on RH and BH against your lap, get this right before actually playing it on the keyboard.
+Fung Lok Fung Hi Lok Fung! Thanks for your comment! Thank you for your kind words too - all glory to God! The name of the song is Oceans by Hillsong. It's an awesome song! Are you a worship keyboardist too? :)
Sandra Chen LauI ain't, but I am a fan of pianist! I am a Chinese, and guess you are as well! Ha, I am going to practise more songs about piano accompaniment as I love singing and playing piano! :)
Please redub the video with a better quality sound. Try comparing it with other tutorial videos. If you can do it, your lessons will be more effective. Great teaching method.
Hey Haziq! Great question! We're basically creating patterns and repeating them while playing. An important tip will be to start slow. Are you keen on learning more? You might be interested in the Inspired Keys Academy Membership where I can answer your question more in-depth with step by step guidance. Just check out www.inspiredkeys.com/join/ :)
If anyone can point me to a tutorial that explains the sequence the plays the notes in the third part that would be much appreiciated. I could not find it in her videoita and still can’t figure it outafter watching this at .25 speed 😊
chords are usually played on the lower octaves (bass clef) and all the 3 keys should be played at the same time but what are you playing with both hands?
Hi Debojit, so there are quite a number of ways to play chords - not necessarily at the lower octaves, and not necessarily all 3 keys needing to be played at the same time! :D
Sandra Chen I need to know how and what to play on the piano while singing any song. Do I need to play the chords or arpeggios or the melody also and how to play rhythm? How to find the chord progression of any melody?
Hey Debojit, thanks for your questions! There are a few ways I can help you answer these questions more in-depth: (1) Joining the Inspired Keys Academy - In addition to answering your worship keys questions and giving feedback to improve your playing, I also include ALL Inspired Keys Courses to help you master worship keys skills more quickly than by learning on your own. Hi Rupali! Thanks for your comment! I teach worship keys in-depth on the Inspired Keys Academy, if you'd like to join as a member, be sure to sign up at inspiredkeys.com/join!
Fantastic! I'm an experienced musician but only just deciding to learn the piano now. This helped a lot. My only constructive criticism is that I seemed to hear audio from both your video camera's; it sounded a bit 'phasey' and I'd suggest just using the audio from one camera; whichever one sounds best. I hope that is useful. :)
Hey Ryan thanks a lot for your feedback! This was a video from way back before I figured out how to make videos with better audio quality so I hope you'll find the newer videos easier to listen to!
Hi Richard! Thanks for your question - I'll be creating a detailed Piano Accompaniment course real soon which will include a PDF sample of these accompaniment styles, do stay tuned! AND get a ton of worship keys freebies as well! Just go to inspiredkeys.com/freebies to sign up for my email list and access your freebies :)
Hi Wai Wai Chan, thanks a lot for your kind words! It really isn't a formula. The idea is to roll up your chords slowly . Have you given it a try yet? :)
Hello Sandra...This seem like a building up a song tutorial I have always look for a tutorial that explains the piano building up structure in a song this is something I struggle with a lot when i am composing I create some nice chords and then I get stuck in a loop or change the chords or melody in a way that it changes the ambient of my song.I don`t know if that`s what you try to explain in step two I got confuse 2:42 did you meant to say we should change in between by adding more notes or that what you were about to explain is what you should not do please help me whit this and I`ll be a loyal subscriber!!Xo)
Hi Abiel! Thanks for your question! at 2:42 I meant to say that you can keep that rhythm for that section. Maintaining the same rhythm that was played. So that (being the 2nd pattern) has more notes than the 1st pattern, but less notes than the 3rd pattern. Hope this helps! :D Happy New Year!
Hey Sandra God bless you sister:o)so let me see if I get it for the verse part right you divide the verse in two lets say is a 32 for the first part in this part you use the same chords you use in the intro but using them in an arpeggio way and in the second 32 you do the same but add more notes to the rhythm only that i am not suppose to add as much notes as I would in the chorus am I right? Please forgive my poor grammar... xO)
Sorry to bother sister:o) I know you area a hard worker but could you correct me and tell me if i got it right and if I am going in the right direction...
Hi Gerrald! The accompaniment style can be seen as a "formula" if you like! The chord will depend on the section of the song I'm playing at the moment.
Amazing how this teacher explains patterns. I am classical piano teacher who learned to play only what is written on the paper, so I am trying to learn comping by myself. I've spent hours on UA-cam trying to find a pedagogical tutorial and, so far, I have seen nothing like Sandra's. Her
fine skills explaining simple to complex patterns in a step-by-step manner is unique.
Step 1: Okay, I can play basic chords.
Step 2: I'm getting a hang of it
Step 3: BEAST MODE!!!
Amazing....... the last sophisticated improvisational section (full on piano configuration) was beautiful.
Hi Sandra I am Som from india. I am very glad to see your vedios inspired to me alot.. 💐💐💐💐💐👍🙏
Excellent tutorial!!!!
Yay, just what I needed. Sometimes, I struggle to come up with more ideas during those repetitive times. This is so helpful. I'm looking forward to more ideas and more videos. Thanks, Sandra!

Thank you Sandra.
I loved this!! Literally music to my ears
I'm a newbie. Can you please tell what chords you are playing ? In each part that is. Love from Asia 💕
Do google the chords ! :D
I really enjoyed when you sang along to the song.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
May I know the key signature and the chords progression used ? Thanks.
And the title of the song too 🙏🙏🙏
Would you please give tutorial for Midnight Blue by Melissa Manchester. Does the song only work when played in a band?

Great info
😍😍😍 amazing
Thank you

very useful video! can i ask you how many notes did you use on part 2 (when you play for example 1 5 1 chord)?
Amazing
Thanks Central Tim! :D
You just earned a subscriber. Thank you 😊 😊
Thank you so much Tene!
wait , what's the left hand chord? is that a formula or something like that?
Hi Gerrald! The accompaniment style can be seen as a "formula" if you like! The chord will depend on the section of the song I'm playing at the moment.
What is this song ?
thank you! this is helpful
So glad it helped, you're super welcome!
Love u... !!it was beautiful...
