Just a quick hint. When you bring home a wool garment or wool yarn from a thrift store or garage sale, put it in the freezer for a week. You do not want moths bursting forth and consuming your items!

Do what you can with what you have when you can. I was showing my niece recently just two days ago some suitcase cubes that I purchased for the intent of filling them up with Necessities like clothing. I showed her two cubes that were packed with underwear, one that was packed with bras, and one that was completely bursting with socks because these are the things that you use so often and people don't really think about that. Also I told her when you see pajamas on clearance cuz they go on clearance at Wally World often pick you up a pair or two or every time you go to the store check out the clearance section that's how I've gotten my lounging pants that used to be $20 picked them up at clearance for $5 etcetera I've been doing this now for 2 years and I'm pretty set in the clothes department. I also do this with HBA items such as toothbrushes and floss and toothpaste when I go shopping for these items I always pick one or two extra and I put them in a Rubbermaid little container with a snap lid and I just keep on throwing it in there right now today it is completely full and it took me about a year and a half to fill her up. I do that with lighters of all sizes and types add items to help make fire etcetera you get the gist

I was raised by parents of the depression, and learned so many wonderful skills from my grandparents and my parents. What a blessing to know how to bake bread, cook from scratch, preserve food, how to grow a seasonal garden, sew, make quilts, knit, crochet, weave, spin, and also how to fish. I am ready for what comes, and will be able to manage the chaos that might ensue after this election and the winter to come. In my part of the country, we have to always be ready for hurricane season and a grid down situation due to the poor management of our state by our elected leaders. One thing people do not think to prep for is car maintenance. One important thing for those of us who start our cars with a fob, is to have spare batteries for our fobs, additional oil for the car engine, a good spare tire or two, and other simple maintenance items for our vehicle if there is car to power it available. My power bank can be solar charged, and I have collected all kinds of battery banks to keep the necessities powered. I also bought a small electric cooler for things in my frig that must remain cool. Also, I keep a week of meat in the freezer because of the grid down situation we often face in Texas. I do have jars and jars of canned meat and beans in my pantry. I have five hydrogardens to grow food inside when my outside gardens are done.

Here's something the crafty people might want to try. I was given some thin gloves but they were not warm. I took an old sweatshirt and cut out mitten shapes that would fit over my hands in the gloves, 2 pieces for each mitten, sew the outside edges. Then I carefully cut the palm side of each mitten side to side where my hand bends, the material has never raveled. Now if I need to use fingers, I can just flip the mitten's top over my fingers and still have the gloves to keep from freezing till I can flip the mittens back over my fingers.

This year it’s different: we have a half cord of wood and kindling, I’ve lined all the window curtains, and I’m canning up a storm so when our electric bill is higher, I can moderate food cost. We’ve also stocked up on proper winter clothes…nothing is worse than a damp cold! Storage tip for surplus blankets and quilts - remove the mattress from a bed, lay the blankets smoothly on the box spring, you can stack a lot then lift the mattress back onto the bed. Extra blankets make cushioned pallets on the floor (if anybody remembers those!).
Staying warm while outside, wear a pair of exam gloves under gloves or mittens. it helps to keep your hands dry. Another good investment is the flock lined dishwashing gloves, not just for around the house but for outside jobs as well.

All the boots in my size at the thrift store (St. Vinny’s is my favorite!) are either too tight, too narrow, or have two inch heels. My solution? Men’s boots! I’m too old to be a fashionista. We were unprepared for the cold, but quickly got organised with 2 wood heaters, wood & removed & cut up dead trees & stocked up to dry for the future. We were like Sherlock Holmes to discover the many drafts around windows and doors in this old house and insulated as much as we could. We also had lots of warm clothing (because I bought in the sales!) & blankets are my best friends! We are now in our last month of winter and my thoughts are turned towards the veggie patch which is non-existent so far...I am closely watching the track of the sun to find the best place for planting & watching the critters that visit (that will eat the veg!) So far, we have possums, rats, rabbits, deer and a lot of birdlife...I haven't had to tackle these before, but will learn and try and adjust as needed ... I enjoy the challenge of change & love learning new skills... I also bought Lisa's book and am going through the 100 days...thank you for giving guidance when I could have been in a really big mess!!

Wear an older pair of sneakers/running shoes indoors to reduce wear on your socks. Shoes also provide insulation for your body in winter as they literally get your feet up and off the floor. Another bonus is better traction reduces slips and falls, falls off small ladders, etc. As a strange but true extra tip, my mother swore by wearing old nylons/pantyhose under her jeans in winter as an alternative to long underwear. She found the thin nylon fabric helped trap body heat and kept her legs and core warm. If you can still find cords - sometimes called corduroy pants - the heavier fabric is warmer than blue jeans. We're in central Ontario, Canada up near the border of Algonquin Park so we do cold up here.

I always think about jars clinking or crashing if there’s an earthquake. I put cardboard between them and will put a brace on the front of the shelf. I’m in SW Ontario and earthquakes aren’t typically a problem but you never know. I always expect the unexpected.

I lived in CA and OR and was always conscious of the potential for earthquakes. I cut off old wool socks and slipped the top half around the jars to cushion them.
After watching a homesteader lose all her food she put up in jars in a small quake... I put a rope across the front of the open shelves up a few inches to keep stuff from falling off. I put magnets on cabinet doors, too.

When my husband built my shelves he incorporated a lip and on the end an extra board for protection. For any display items Velcro. Also cup like hooks and bungee cords for open sections of shelves to hold items on shelves too - I live in Alaska and earthquakes are sometimes daily for me- little ones, but have had big ones too.

After the horrible winter we had in 22-23, I made sure my son and I have extra socks and underwear set back. Thankfully I have a good supply of heavy duty coats compliments of the Durango & Silverton Railroad. My late husband worked there and got new coats about every year. My son and I were just making a winter prep list a couple of nights ago and top on that list is new tires for him. He just bought a new car and it has sissy city tires on it that most definitely will not get him through our winters. Speaking of cars...Make sure you have an emergency tote in your car with blankets, gloves, candles, matches, water, and a few snacks!

Having a backstock of boots is a must. I like Herman's Survivors from Wal-Mart because I know I'll get 12 to 18 months out of a pair, depending on the model. They're priced low enough where I can grab multiple pairs. I've been doing this since 2020. What I have real reservations about, and it's the pest control guy in me coming out, is with buying used boots, clothing or furnishings. Yard sales, garage sales and used goods stores are a high risk for bringing home bedbugs or carpet beetles in those boots or anything else you buy. These used goods sellers know almost nothing about pest control. They're more concerned with making items presentable for resale.
For socks, I like Redhead Merino wool socks. I always wear them with a liner sock underneath, so I don't blister my feet. Always wear a liner sock under a thicker sock when you wear boots. Redhead has the highest Merino wool to dollars ratio out there. They're 81% Merino wool at something like $12 per pair. They also go on sale a few times per year.

@@TyraC-vg7di Most effective way to kill any pest which could be inside a pair of used boots is to run them through a hot cycle in the dryer. The soles should hold up to the temperature. Top priority (always) is bedbugs, followed by carpet beetles. I do not recommend chemical sprays unless you read the label and it says you can use the product inside a pair of boots or shoes.

Poor hubby was going back and forth (he spent nights with me) in the snow and cold (minus 0). I also bought a LOT of items about 2 years ago. Still have laundry soap, paper plates and solo cups. Just placed another "winter" stock up from Wal Mart shipping and food items from the grocery store. Like Phil, hubby asked WHAT is in this one particular box. 😁He can hardly wait to help me put it all away this weekend.🤨 Can't believe it but it sounds like we might have the same winter coat (look like a black marshmallow) and new boots. Great reminder - will count my socks. All are black. Hole in one and swap it out until another pair is made.

Learn the size difference between men and women’s shoe sizes. A women’s 10 is roughly the same as a men’s 8. This can be a guide to see if it’s worth a try on when you find a clearance sale at the store or something you like at a yard sale or thrift store. A boys size is about the same as a women’s size if I remember correctly. This can also help with sock sizes.

Absolutely right on socks and underwear. I buy new Merino wool socks - at least three pairs - every year, and they last me more than a year. Underwear, you bet, although I have patterns and the elastic to make some out of old tee shirts if it came to that. BLANKETS: I buy 2 to 2 1/2 yards of Polar Fleece at JoAnn's when it is on sale, especially if it is ugly and 70-percent off. I have these stacked up and use them for so much, not just on my bed. The dogs don't care if their blanket I wrap around the dog bed features fat pink hippos in costumes. (Who designed that fabric??) What is cozier than putting a piece of polar fleece on top of your fitted sheet on a cold winter night? I've made them into little kid sleeping bags, too. I also have a lot of the mylar emergency blankets around, in my truck, etc., but I also use them in my greenhouse for times in spring when plants might get a frost in there. No wind in there, so I can just put them over the plants with no weights. I also make corn pillows, in 'cherry land Michigan', you might have a source for cherry pits. A minute or so in the microwave and I put one down by my feet and another one on my chest in bed on an evening when I feel like I'm getting sick. - that has helped stop many a cold along with herbal teas made from my herbs.

Having spent the last 4 years in the mountains of Colorado, I can highly recommend 'smart wool'. Socks, hats, mittens, gloves, underwear similar to the thermal kind except it is thin and lightweight and smooth, not itchy at all. Are they cheap, not really, but it's an investment that will last years. Everyone here has smart wool things and I'm so glad I do too.

If at all possible buy wool knit hats, gloves, and scarves. They stay warm when you're wet. Wool can be the difference between life and death. The hats and scarves are so simple to knit yourself and mittens aren't much harder. If you need it you won't care if it looks wonky. Lion Brand wool is available pretty cheap at most hobby/craft stores. You can wear cotton or acrylic under the wool if it's easier on your skin.

They do not make socks as high up on your calf as they use to do. So i learned how to make my own , long ones that go up to my knees. I do ton's of crafts . I make my own clothes , crochet my own afghans, sweathers , slipper boots , gloves, mittens , scarfs , hats , quilt my own quilts , knit my own socks, I can my own food , cook , bake etc. And outside chores - I grew up on a farm with 9 siblings and we all had chores to do , inside and out side. Mom had three wood stoves in the house - so helping cut wood , stacking it outside by the cord, then bring it inside to the wood bins by the stoves , were not fun but it kept us from going hungry and cold. Upstate ny does get pretty cold in the winters. Yup , I am a down home country girl and everything i know was taught to me by my Grandmother , Mother and all my Aunts. Great video! I most definitely took advantage of the clearance sales last season. Did a major stock-up on socks, underwear, thermal outdoor wear (layering), scarves, gloves and beanies. Also scored on flannel sheet sets and invested in new mattress toppers for extra comfort. That led to extra sets of pillows and bed linen for each bed, electric blankets and finally faster drying bath towels and bathroom rugs. Our more recent purchases were air purifiers. If things go south and we no longer have access to these things, it’s a good feeling knowing we have back-ups. Stay safe all! ❤

Being 85, my favorite attire in the winter is heavy flannel pants...with a sweater. I have a lot of socks, but mostly now I wear the fluffy socks that have the grippy things on the soles so I don't slip on the floor. I always have them on my list for Christmas at least 6 or 8 pair a year, also underwear...at least 8 pr. every year. If I get more than that I am grateful. I also love flannel sheets. I look at estate sales for old school wool blankets. Also add road salt for winter stuff. Our snows always have one or two surprises - like ice. Sometimes having a bag of sand or kitty litter in the car too.

Just got a pair of bogs on sale. Have not been that lucky her. The bogs are winterized. Made beef bone broth and the meat around the bones I canned. Chicken bone broth today. Not enough for canning so will freeze. Costco here for paper products and dishwasher soap.
