      It has been a long time ago since I saw that for the last time with cattle. If I remember correctly, the cattle farmers were much faster and more ... "agressive" with their slaps. Are there still cattle markets done like this that you know off?

    Hello. I spent 4 years working in Amsterdam from 1999. This brought back loads of memories. I didn’t manage to get to Woerden but did get to Alkmaar a couple of times, missed the cheese event though. I used to go to Edam & Gouda often. The church of St John in Gouda is incredible. If you like stained glass this is the place to go. During WWII the church authorities managed to move the glass through and kept it hidden from the Nazi’s and also protect it from bomb damage.
    I loved Queen’s Day as it was then. I lived on Brouwers Gracht and the canal was incredible. The junction 300 ft away was a canal crossroads without stop signs or lights. I’ve never seen so many boats and people on the water at the same time.

    I remember that when I was about twenty, I wanted to be able to roll my R as well which at the time I could not. I tried it every morning cycling to work and after a few weeks I finally got it. I still exactly remember where I was cycling at that victorious moment.

    There are two types of rolling r in Dutch, both are correct. 1. The tongue thrill (heavy protestants use this type often) and 2. the throat r. I can only do the throat r. My mother practiced with me for hours to get me to do the tongue thrill r, but to no avail.

    When seeing the title my immidiate reaction was "Woerden... obviously". I have been to both several times with guests from different countries and they always like Woerden more. As someone from Utrecht, for me it is of course a no brainer. I always had nicknames. Woerden I called "Brievliet" after a small family oriented themepark called Drievliet.... Alkmaar is "Swissneyland" after the "give me your money" oriented themepark.

    I was very excited after reading the titel of this video, since you apparently went to my hometown. I was even more happy learning you preferred Woerden over Alkmaar. However my head almost exploded when you said you passed my house on Defensie-eiland. If you ever want to visit Woerden again I can show you around (with the help of a guide), it's more than just cheese ;) There is a 'secret door' to the vaults of the castle, you can climb the windmill and there is Roman stuff (there was a Roman castle and we have a roman ship on display in a public garage), etc. etc.
    Please contact me if you're nearby again.

    When I was a child I went to the cheese market of Gouda. For what I remember it was a lot like what was shown from the cheese market in Alkmaar.
    The rolling r is pretty funny thing. I grew up in Zuid Holland, pretty close to Leiden. For me it's the placement of the r, wheter it's rolling or not. For example for me in the word 'brandweerman = firefighter' , then the first r is rolling and the last one not. Don't ask why :)

    First off, how dare you two not have any display cheese while you are talking at the table 😂 (just kidding). Thanks so much for showing that whole cheese negotiation. That was awesome! I miss cheese, I mean real cheese. The cheese here in Korea is processed and fake. Great stuff again you two. Oh, I like your placement at the kitchen table/island? Either way, that's a great location! Looking forward to your next video!!!

    de kaasmarkt in Alkmaar wordt aan toeristen verkocht als de kaasmarkt van Amsterdam..........een duidelijke toeristenval. er zijn ook boeren die kaas e.d. aan huis verkopen en rondleidingen geven.

    • @MaartjeTosca
      @MaartjeTosca 7 місяців тому

      Alle kaasmarkten zijn kassamarkten en dus toeristenvallen. De kaas wordt al lang niet meer zo verhandeld en wat mij nog het meest irriteert is de fake Volendamse klederdracht van de zogenaamde kaasmeisjes.

    Haha I cant roll my RRRR's either Erik, and I had classical singing lessons for over 5 years and my teacher really tried to get me to not gurgle my RR''s in the back of my throat. Best I can do is do RR''s ""in the middle"" , but that needs a lot of concetrating and so I don't bother most of the time.

    Not many Dutch go to a cheese market unless u have small children. This is merely a tourist thing. And "handjeklap" is still done on horse and cow markets and legally binding, just like a handshake.

    • @iekue
      @iekue 5 місяців тому

      The Woerden cheese market actually has actual cheese trade happening, unlike those commercial tourist ones.

    • @AlexK-yr2th
      @AlexK-yr2th 5 місяців тому

      @@iekue It is still a thing from the past and something common Dutch people no longer participate in. We buy cheese in a shop, supermarket or convenience/specialty shop, whatever we personally prefer and/or what our budget allows. It is pretty obvious that these markets are exclusively for tourists, even local ones for family or school trips.
      You can name as many exception as you want, the rule will remains the same.

    Ive been really enjoying following you guys on your journey living and exploring the Netherlands!
    I hope you’re enjoying Hilversum! I don’t know that city well, but the one thing I know and thus tip I have: Theatre café Muze is a really fun cafe. They host all kinds of events, also for an international crowd like music nights, standup comedy nights. And they also regularly host a really fun pubquiz if you’re into trivia!
    Cheers!

    I can roll my "r" in the back of my throat or in the front. It's a simple choice. The front is the original Dutch way and dominant in other European languages. The back seems to me a French deviation, especially in the Northern (Germanic, ethnically) part of the populace. Peeps in the South of France used to comment on that as horrible.
    In the NL the rear has become a thing through people working in National TV and radio when executives allowed all sorts of speech handicapped Dutch people on air.
    I felt the Dutch ch and g are enough in making sounds as if we clear our throats, let that be clear. We don't need to add the r to that too.

    The Handje klap is still used in some farmingareas. They also do that when they want to sell and buy animals. There is also allot to explore in the beautiful historical center of Woerden
    Yeh..Alkmaar is the oldest cheese market.
    They show you the celling proces in the old days.
    I saw it once manny years ago. For me it was to much a tourist atraction.

Not that difficult. Fun to read Tammy. Very cheap now, less than 7 euros, delivering included. And if I once will meet you in a café, I will tell you about the Waterwolven-boek, Eric. And speaking of 'r' rolling, I always thought 'Ja zuster, Nee zuster' a cute series, especially with the bakker song:

    The Alkmaar Cheesmarket, though historically started as a standard local farmers cheese market, nowadays not anymore what it once was. It is now a complete tourist trap, solely aimed at entertainment and only as a secundairy purpose selling hugely overpriced sample os cheese.
    Where once the cheese was sold and bought by large parties per ton (1000 kg) now you can't even a whole gouda cheese (per cheese many kilo's).
    Alkmaar is now just theater.

    Hey, you guys start the video with gibberish and say "now we're talking about turkey". Now I think you mean the animal that gets eaten at Thanksgiving. But the somewhat left-oriented Dutch may find this discriminatory. When we Dutch talk like that we sometimes say "now you're speaking Turkish" the language. Nowadays you have to be careful.
