@@gert-janvanderlee5307 I learned that the hard way. Bought myself a pink Hawaiian shirt for a party when I was young ones and didn't wash it. My skin broke out allover for almost a week, having to apply extremely smelly cream to get rid of it. Never again.... lesson learned.

@@Paul_C After 10 washes they are already starting to wear down but I do agree old towels dry off better than using new towels despite them having been thoroughly washed. Using fabric softener makes them even worse when you try to dry yourself off.

Arnhem is a nice city to visit too and while you're at it, take an overnight stay somewhere on the Veluwe and visit Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe and the Kröller-Müller Museum of arts in Otterloo or Het Openluchtmuseum, also in Arnhem. Rent or lend a bike there and just go cycling through the park. It should be spectacular during spring!

Hilversum is the center of Dutch tv and radio. I can recommend the museum Beeld and Geluid in Hilversum. Though that’s hardly a hidden gem.
And yes, I wash the sheets before putting them on the bed. It’s what’s recommended by the sellers too. And same with towels, I even let those soak overnight.
Funny thing: “houdoe” that you say at the end, that’s a Brabant thing. I don’t think that they say that above the rivers.

Always wash fabrics that you will touch with your skin or that will touch clean tableware first, like sheets, towels, teatowels and (under)shirts, pyamas etc. You need to get rid of any remaining traces of dye, mordant, or fumigation/preservation chemicals used during storage and transport, as well as the starch often used to make sure that smooth fabrics remain looking smooth and unwrinkled in the packaging and handling.
If you leave those on the first time you use it, it can feel scratchy and unpleasant and irritate your skin if you've got sensitive skin.
Teatowels will often be less absorbent the first time if you use them before washing them.

Nice to hear that you are moving to a smaller town and gonna experience the true Netherlands. Personally, Dutch don't use brokers really but maybe it is different for expats, not having access to social housing. I would have moved to the South where the food is much more elaborate (Bourgondisch) and life is a little more laid back, being surrounded by a lot more nature and farmland.
If I can give you 1 tip for a new video (being from Den Bosch myself), is to go to the "Zwanenbroedershuis" which I myself only found out about in my 20's having lived there from birth. It is a bit like the "knights of the round table" and an active society (even the Kings and Queens are members). It has so much history and they basically were founded to protect and fund the St. Jan Cathedral for centuries.

The discovery of a Philips 21TX240A/06 television at 5:29 in the video is quite remarkable. The television dates back to 1958, making it quite rare. The radio at 5:32 is a fantastic Grundig 3055/56 that you should buy immediately if the price is below €100. It's truly worth more than that in impeccable condition. The radio at 5:50 is a Philips B4X53AT/01, not as interesting because it's no longer a true tube radio. There are earlier types of radios that were truly the first transistors. At €35, it's priced relatively high. At 5:59, there's a Philips 14TX113A television from 1955 shown for €150. I think that's a good price considering its collectible value. You don't often find them in such good condition. I don't know anything about the rest of the items. Just wanted to share this piece of audio & television because it's my hobby.

Hidden gem in Amersfoort: the Belgian Monument (Belgisch Monument / Belgenmonument). It's not so much hidden as it is just simply not in the top 5 of things one would immediately associate with Amersfoort. It's a WWI monument in art deco style, all within what is basically a garden/park. It's just so beautiful and serene and it used to be my favourite spot in Amersfoort when I lived there. There's also one of the measured middles of the country [I think there's like five in total, two of which can be found in Amersfoort: one on the grounds of the Belgian Monument and one in front of the Lieve Vrouwetoren].

Well, I'm a hypocrit because today I bought and immediately put on a warm, soft and comfy leisure dress from LID'L's brand, Esmara. But even garment specialists will tell you that clothing, sheets and pillow cases can be bleached, overly dyed, treated with stain-resistant chemicals or water-repellent coatings, as well as anti-mildew agents. Because of this it's always good to wash before wearing, especially if off a clothing rack.
Kringloop winkels are cool, yes. We also have ruwinkels that work on a point system which you gather by trading in your stuff. No cash ever changes hands.
I once taught at a HBO in Hilversum, 'media city', which is the hub of Dutch broadcasting and media stations, and because of this the Dutch dialect used there has been considered the standard. It's an interesting place, but perhaps not as friendly as the working class and student-centered diverse city of Rotterdam. And you're going to love all their ollie bollen stands around the holidays, which I found even tastier than your favourite Rotterdam station kiosk.

As a man educated with the idea that personnel should know this about first washing or not, I used to have no clue. There's more to it than just an opinion. And I learned that the hard way.
    (1) Helping a very old citizen out, I bought new bed sheets and these got put onto the bed. Beautiful set, with a bit of saturated colours. The bed on which they had been put was in a corner of the nursing home's room. After a few nights, colour had been transferred from the sheets to the white walls. We complained to the brand and their response was, "but you have to wash them first."
    (2) Products produced in faraway countries may be packaged under a protective gas to prevent moulds, parasites, etc. to arrive at the destination. As these are toxic to certain species, I would say that this implies you always have to wash first, to get rid of such molecules sticking to your bed sheets.
    (3) "Natural" may be worse. There's a well-known insect spray in the NL. Because of the woke movement they changed the working substance in the spray from synthetic to natural. Small difference in 3D molecular structure. Turns out I am intolerant to the natural one, not the synthetic. This just to underline the importance of #2. Wash first.

And when you live in Hilversum, you live already in the same province as Hoorn. Hilversum is (in my opinion) a better place to live than Rotterdam. Less lively, than Rotterdam of course, but beautiful surroundings. As for the sheets, if they are new, I would not wash them.

You always wash sheets and towels first. Right out of the package they stink of plastic and fabrick stifner that they use to make it look nice in the packaging. Always wash first!

Hidden gems. How about doing a hofjes tour in Leiden? Or visit one of the very many museums? Or visit the small town Brielle (den Briel) they have a nice historic centre within extensive fortifications. They have a big historical festival on the 1th of April each year to commemorate the liberation from the Spanish in 1572. the whole town turns into a kind of renaissance fair including a reenactment of the breaching of the city gates. The song “in naam van oranje doe open de poort” is about this historical event.

Maybe you already know this one, but I’m still going to name it. Every tourist goes to the Begijnenhof in the center of Amsterdam, it is beautiful but not the hidden gem I want to bring to your attention. The real gem is the alley behind Begijnenhof, when you stand on Spui square, where the entrance to Begijnenhof is, you take the alley on the right called Gedempte Begijnensloot, walk all the way to the end where you see sliding glass doors. Between 10:00 and 17:00 you can enter, entrance is free, the old street got a glass canopy and on the old facades of nearby houses are beautiful paintings. Walk to the end through the glass sliding doors and go left to the courtyard of the old Burgerweeshuis (citizens orphanage in a former convent) or to the right to another courtyard also from the old Burgerweeshuis. If you walk through you get to the Kalverstraat, the main shopping street of Amsterdam. Don’t do that, yet, because three is another part of this gem. When you got to the left when exiting the sliding glass doors of Gedempte Begijnensloot, to the courtyard, go through the gate on your right into the Sint Luciënsteeg. When you exit the gate, look to the right to the facade and you’ll see some of the most beautiful mural stones of the city and just around the corner (left) there are more of them. When you walk out of the Sint Luciënsteeg, you get to the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal where the trams 2 and 12 go to and from the Central Station, walk toward tram stop Paleisstraat. It is a very nice part of town and it is all free and very easy to go to by public transport. Take tram 2 or 12 from Central Station and get of at tram stop Koningsplein, walk a bit back to where the tram came from to Spui square and there the entrance of the alley Gedempte Begijnensloot is just right of the entrance of Begijnenhof.

Wash the sheets! There is a starch in it to put them tightly in the package.
A real hidden gem is part of an old industrial estate in Amersfoort. It's called Isselt and there are many new small businesses and restaurants. Even 3 thrift stores🤪. There are plenty of nice restaurants there. Go when the weather is nice and sit on the terrace of B.A.S. Bites and Store and be surprised by the delicious food, the great environment, but above all the enormous hospitality.
Amersfoort is not far from Hilversum so that shouldn't be a problem. Good luck with the move and furniture shopping.

Since you are moving house, please consider this: If you don't want people to know your address, this is your chance. Don't film out of your window, don't film around your house, don't mention travel times to destinations, etc. etc.
