How to Find KEY resistance in GM PASSKEY Chip for KEY REPLACEMENT VATS PASSKEY BYPASS

- You need to know the resistance of the chip in the key when replacing the key or adding a inline resistor to bypass the key when the anti theft system is not working correctly. You can also reprogram the PCM and delete the system, Which I can do
It’s a neat trick I appreciate it thank you The problem is it’s too late I lost the key .
Actually the 1986 Corvette was the first car that used the factory VATS system with the chip in the key. This same system lasted until 2002 when it was installed into the last fourth gen F-Body Camaro & Firebird like you said, and I also believe the last Cadillac Eldorado as well (these cars all still used the vintage Saginaw steering column from 1969).
Damn, way back when. That was probably the passkey 1, Then they went to 2, no idea what the change were Ya you are right the 2002 eldo had a Saginaw column with the chip.
Yeah I am not sure when it became the VATS 2 system. Someone had installed a resistor in place of the key pellet under the dash before I bought my 2001 Trans Am for an aftermarket remote start system. The first winter I had the car it would never start on very cold mornings, but would be fine when it warmed up some. Turns out that resistor they used for that chip in the key became defective in the colder weather, and wouldn't allow me to start it by key. I removed that resistor and installed a module that has a resistor inside a plastic case, and plugs right into the factory connector on the steering column.
Never had any real problems with any of the GM cars I've had that used the older Saginaw steering columns, except with the tilt mechanism that gets loose over time, but you just need to tighten some screws to fix that small issue. Nothing like the later GM columns that were recalled a couple years ago with the defective ignition switches.
I took apart a tilt column last year, i'm surprised it went back together as easy as It did. No more wobble, its nice.
thanks my dude ! I was about to blindly order the wrong key LOL
Great details. I appriciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
2004 Buick century!!! Ughh went to make key never would have guessed it’s vat system.
Yeah, I have an '01...shit is nightmare.
Yes it was the VATS KEY III
I got .87 reading. What code would that be?
I got .89 what u find out ??
Hay I have a 1987 Corvette when I put the connectors on the key the numbers just go up and don't
What if they resistor is not reading anything but 0’s across the meter, would that mean the key itself isnt good?
yea blown Broken internally Dirty contact etc
@@GhettoWagon Id have to replace the ignition switch and keys im assuming? If so are those keys still made today?
@@ant8729 Not sure. Parts are getting hard to find I would just program it out and disable the system its cheaper
I have a 1999 monte carlo LS...My key is lost ...Which key works on the 99 monte carlo ls???
Not sure you might have the double sided key for that and a pass key 3 system
My is showing 5.98?!?!? Which one should I go with?
The GM passkey introduce 1986.. Chevrolet Corvette.. 1989 Camaro Firebird.. this was the best and most effective.. anti-theft system ever.. Ford securilock. Introduced 1996.. was much better.. modern cars with push-button ignition.. are the easiest cars to steal.. I work with people. Who buy salvage cars.. doing it's over 30 years.. auto theft was cut in half with the passkey 2 system.. even more. Ford secure lock.. but the new push button ignitions.. sends out a signal. Criminal can get the code.. this is why I only drive..Aa..GM.96..Camaro..😎
Pass key 2 is junk. You can disable it very easy
When I read mine I only get a reading of 1?
Can you check what vats key you have with out the key ?
Probably some way but I am unsure. Module is programed to the keys resistance.
I have the issue of lost keys is there a code or something on the vin plate or in the owners manual?
I lost my key and no way in shape, form or fashion will I ever pay or nore can I afford a key or ignition switch so I've decided to go this route and found an equation and knockout in the back of my owner's warranty manual 39K7 20/MO.. Someone please help cause I'm going with #11 but idk cause idk how the sovle that equation
My security light blinks,,,I just bought a 15 resistor Bypass kit,,,,I tested both of my keys,,, they Both read 890,,,,I used the 900 resistor in the kit,,and my security light still blinks and it won't start,,,, I'm out of ideas.....
What car? Can u disable the VATS in the PCM? I can with a click of a box and a reflash on my LT1 Impala
yeah well my key ohms at 470 and according to the charts that does not fall in-between any of them
Bro the mullet car is the 3rd gen camaro lol
Yup! But not too many are left so they upgraded to the newer ones
my 92 has 80k miles and VATS sitll works perfect, but this video reminds me to disable this POS before i get stranded
Next time I reprogram a PCM i'm unchecking it
My 99 trans am has 167,xxx miles and still runs strong
.... I just can't wait for the kids today to be 15 years down the road and have a kid say to them..."oh you like those cars from that mumble rap crap era....ur old lol. I'm 4th gen myself grew up born during 3rd gen and respect earlier gens that led the way....but as my father used to tell me...it's all just noise lol.
There must be a crap ton of #5 keys around. Mine was a 5 also.
I wonder if the 96 key fits in the 95. Some say if I keep picking keys from GM junkyard cars I have have a set that will work on hundreds if not thousands of vehicles. is there a signal resistor out there that is close to 1.130?
I don't think there is, you'll need to play with ohms law a little.. Series adds together, where parallel takes away (but not as equally as subtracting). I could draw up a simple schematic later if you need me to.
hey man can you help my key reads zero pmd
is your meter working?
Ghetto Wagon yes is brand new
my 91 Eldorado had it, pc of Shit early 2000 cost me over 400 to replace key an cylinder cause that pc of shit wouldnt start lol
That is probably another reason why they are all junked!
1st car i experienced a 400+ $$ tune up , nothing on this car was cheap to work on sideways aluminium V8 took up the whole bay to many electronics, bring me back to pre 73 please lol
I always wondered if you could put in the FWD version of the 5.3, LS4 in a Cadillac. It would solve the north star problems with a LS engine . Get the caddy with a clean title but busted. Get a wrecked 5.3 LS4 FWD Chevy or Pontiac.
The resistors are cheap enough, or were. Why not buy one of each, splice into the wire temp with clips, and keep going until you find the one that turns off the security light? Tidy it up & move on..
1.1 Kilo ohms
No, it's 1.13 KILO OHMS, or 1130 Ohms.
Ya that's right I always was no good with the scales at school
