Some of you have asked me about the two way courier label. When I submitted the application in December, two courier labels were generated but one of my friend has submitted her application recently & has mentioned that VFS generates only 1 label for 2 way courier service now. So it should be fine, I will post here if she faces any issues. Request you all to please ask your questions here so that it is useful for everyone.

Tip: I didn't have a proper address proof in the US because I'm a student and I wasn't on the lease. However, the people at the Atlanta VFS told me I could give a letter of undertaking (which should be notarized) from my roommate (who is on the lease) along with a utility bill (or other proof like DL) under her name and I was able to get the passport in that manner. Although they may deal with each case uniquely, this is what happened in my case. I just want to thank you so much for your guidance. I got it done easily with your video and received my new passport (with name split) quickly as well.
Hello Mariam, Iam on the same boat as you [ dont have my name on lease and a masters student]. After getting your passport corrected did u get your F1 visa stamped again ? and will my change in name in visa cause any problem for applying for OPT/CPT. Please let me know how you were able to deal with these.
@nandan gonchikar I didn't get the F1 stamped again. When we travel we just need to carry the old passport (that contains the visa) and the new passport together. About the OPT/CPT I'm not sure if it'll cause a problem but I don't think it should because we always do have the old passport to show that the name has been changed

Sorry Seema, I missed your comment. I am not sure if my late replies will be of any help now, but here are the answers: 1. USPS or FedEx does, just call them & check before you visit them (not all stores do it) 2. Name change is completely different from split of name.. I would suggest you to follow checklist for name change. If I remember correctly, for a name change you would need two newspaper advertisements. If you have more questions for name change, plz contact VFS directly +1 8003209625 3. I am not aware of your individual case, but for my case I have listed all the docs explicitly in the video. Let me know if you have any additional questions

Please note : In the updated checklist ( Which can be downloaded from VFS directly ) it requires you to give your US Adress under "Other Address" Make sure to give US adress. Incase you din't but have already filed everything, you can try sending it. I had given both as indian address but i got my new passport without any problem

Please Note in my case I was asked to fill the Name Change Affidavit without Mentioning FNU as it is not recognized in India. So I was asked to refill the form and Email them. Hey, I hope you are doing well. I am having a same issue need to update my passport with name split. Do we need to submit all the affidavit or only name split affidavit and how many days it takes for the new passport and what about the visa.
Quick Clarification - as you stated your full name is put in under First Name. Then we should say in the affidavit Old Name - Rita Singh LNU as Last Name was left blank. Please correct me. - Does this affidavit have to be printed on plain paper? - A split of the name doesn't require a newspaper advertisement, right? - TWO Public/School documents - A letter/Form from the School and a Patient Form from the Pediatrics will work, right? - We are planning to get signed by a Public Notary. The affidavit shows TWO names and addresses, Does parent will be valid to put in at the time of Notarization?

HI Thank you for the detailed explanation it helped a lot only the music bothered a bit but its ok i slowly and steady understood but have a qts if we have no changes in address or name and nothing still do we have to submit any document in the last list of documents mentioned as MISCELLANEOUS DOCS. (any one of them or none). Also what do you mean by self attested like we need court (like notary) for that or we can do it by yourself. Please do reply as soon as possible thanks.
1 Indian address proof (the last section under miscellaneous) as while filling the form you would have provided atleast one Indian address. So plz give the proof for that- self attested Self attested means- put your sign & today’s date on the xerox copy Self attest doesn’t mean notary

I watched the entire video again as I forgot what I did 8 months back. So at 25.55 minute, I see the auto-filled text against first name & last name says “as appears in passport”, so you need to fill that as per your current passport. I would also suggest you to call VFS help desk to be double sure as you would not want them to reject your application just for this field VFS helpline number +18003209625

It says 'Please ensure to mention 1 Indian and 1 USA address in the online application form.' In online Govt portal form we filled printable as Indian address and other as Indian address as per your video. where are we supposed to fill USA address in online application form ?
USA address is not mandatory. So if VFS has made any changes recently, I am not sure about it. But if VFS has made that mandatory, I guess you could fill the ‘other’ address as the US one

@@deepshikha3990 I believe this would be considered as a name change & not the split of name & hence advertisement might be required. However, my case was not like yours & I would request you to contact VFS directly so that they could guide you in the best possible manner.

Hi Thanks for making this video, it was super helpful. Once the passport got renewed, were you able to amend I797 with name change? When I checked with few attorneys, they said name change by itself is not an amendment unless we change our work location, switch employer, H1B renewal etc.

In the preview mode right before submitting the application on the govt site, I saw 'SPLIT OF NAME' in other category. Thanks I got my visa document corrected first, which was H1B in my case. Then I scheduled my appt with SSN office which asked for the corrected H1B & renewed passport. They issued a corrected SSN card in 2 weeks

@@saravanakumarp9241 I had a location change due to which my Organization filed for an H1B amendment. At the same time I applied for the name correction as well by submitting my new passport. I didn’t go through restamping because H1B was not stamped in my case, I just went for I797A amendment

VFS is asking for tracking numbers before the payment option. from where can I find the exact address where I need to send the documents? The format is usually given for respective fields. For example on the Indian Govt. website DOB format mentioned is DD/MM/YYYY, so please use whatever format is mentioned for that field (I have filled it in the video as well if you want to refer)
I have submitted my lease document from June 2020 notarized and they have asked for valid notarized copy of us address they have asked for updated lease document. In this case what should I do? Please let me know.
Sorry for the late reply. This looks weird. Does the lease clearly say that it’s valid even now? If not, you could ask the owner to sign another lease or just update the previous one with validity. Usual validity is 1 year for the lease but it’s Oct 2021 which is more than a year in your case, so that could be a reason for VFS to react this way. If your lease is valid, I would suggest you to contact VFS helpline directly & ask for clarification

@@americawithdesigirl1636 Both the Aadhar card and Pan card do not show separation of Given name and Last name, they just mention the entire name as XXX YYY. Did VFS bug you to provide a document which clearly mentions your name in the format Given name = XXX, Last name = YYY ?
Hi, for split name should we mention FNU in the name change affidavit? because FNU is present only in U.S license and not in Indian passport, where surname is left blank. In my case, the old and new name will be same?

Hello, thanks for this useful info. I had a question regarding the "proof of address". My current lease is expiring on Apr 31st and I will be getting a new address after that. There is a good chance that the renewed passport comes after the lease is expired. What do you recommend in such a situation? Should I wait and submit the application after I get a new address or is there a provision to provide a different address for passport delivery (other than your proof of address)?
My situation was similar to yours, I used the same address, passport got delivered at this address after lease expiry & i requested the owner to mail it to my new address. I had to travel India & hence it was a bit urgent but if you have time & would like to wait for another month, you could apply from your new address. I don’t think you could provide a different address for delivery in the application..

For address proof of Indian address I am putting my ADHAR card but it has one line extra address than what’s there in passport address .. is that fine ? Sorry for my late revert. To be honest, I haven’t come across this scenario before & I would not suggest you anything on which I am not sure.. It might create a problem later on, so I would suggest change the address proof document or rather change your address on your passport to the one that’s on your Aadhar card.. this way you could be rest assured.. One other suggestion would be to call VFS directly & get their advice..
How can I go about changing my name ? In my current passport a portion of my last name is added to the first name . So I want to get that added back to the last name . Is that possible?

Self-attested document means whatever proof you are submitting (in your case it is a copy of the Utility Bill) should have your sign and current date. You don't need any other letter. Let me know if I understood your question right?

is affidavit for change of appearance mandatory , if there is no significant change in appearance ? just the aging process :) Also if I submit the change of appearance affidavit , can I submit in Tatkal ?
In the checklist it mentions affidavit for change in appearance as mandatory. So I would suggest to please fill it. Even my appearance didn’t change much but I took a new pic & pasted it on the form (better to be safe). I haven’t applied in tatkal so I am not 100% sure about the Tatkal documents but you could call the VFS directly to ask this question

Hi, I generated Courier label and its been weeks. Can i send the documents with the fedex courier label which is dated 3 weeks before or should I pay the fee again and generate new label
I don’t think there is a validity to courier labels generated so should be ok to use the same labels but I wouldn’t advise you anything that I am not 100% sure about, as I have not heard about a situation like this before. I would suggest you to call VFS at +18003209625 & confirm about your specific case

1st Question- they haven’t mentioned that specifically & I used black pen to make it look consistent with the printed application form. I would suggest if you haven’t already filled the form in blue, use black ink and if you have already filled it in blue ink, please cross verify it once with VFS directly. 2nd Question- Yes

I am applying for a new passport just to split my name. Could you tell me which passport service should be selected on the VFS Global website. Also, is there a way to get this service done by visiting the office, instead of mailing the documents to them as I do not want to lose any documents in the process? Thanks again.
If you are not renewing your passport then I would suggest you to call VFS to check if they provide any such service of just splitting the name without renewing the passport (VFS helpline number +18003209625) As far as I know mailing was the only option but I don’t want to give you any incorrect info. You could ask even this question at the same helpline number I gave above Thanks

Yes you would have to select the checkbox for ‘Address’ and ‘Others’. You will have to type in the field as shown in the video ‘Split of Name’. Let me find the blank affidavit link and share
@@americawithdesigirl1636 How do I fill this affidavit. I am splitting my name. Because on the affidavit there is no way to differentiate between, new first name and last name, and old given name. For example if my given name was "ab cd" and now I am making "ab" as my first name and "cd" my last name. It would be still "ab cd". I don't if that makes any sense 😅

Your case would not be ‘split of name’ but I guess a name change for which VFS asks for advertisement, etc. I would suggest you to call VFS directly & ask about your specific case. For your second question, visa doesn’t have husband’s name, it’s usually passport which has husband name. So if your misspelled name is on her passport, she will have to change that & if there is any visa which has husband’s name too then it should change as well
Sorry, I didn’t understand your question completely. I cross-checked the checklist & it doesn’t mention there to get the photo notarized. Do you have a different or new checklist?

@@ShivankKejriwal So if you travel with the new passport (with corrected name), you should have your name match in passport & visa, so I guess there might be some problem with the mismatch, so I would recommend correcting it after you return. But I haven’t faced this scenario so I am not the best person to advise, I would advise you to reach out to VFS for the best solution

1) If you don’t have this split already in any of your public documents, you would not be able to show it as split of name. I guess it would be considered name change 2) Since you are doing it for the first time, I would recommend you to contact VFS directly & ask what documents would be required for your case.

I have to get last name added in my 4 year old son's Indian Passport. I have already got that added in his birth certificate in india. Do I still need to publish lastname addition in the US and Indian newspapers and share the the same with VFS?
I am not 100% sure on this & I don’t want to misguide you in any way.. This case is considered as a name change so I guess newspaper advertisement would be required by VFS. What I have heard is you could get it changed when you go for visa renewal, so port authority should not create a problem. But I am not sure about this so please don’t quote me on this. I would suggest you to check with your School Immigration ofc or USCIS directly I am in the process of changing it on my H1B visa, so once I am done I will upload a video of that process

Hi Aerys- your scenario is exactly the same as mine. So the process listed in the video would be helpful for your case. Yes, re-issue normally. No newspaper advertisement needed for split of name. That’s only required for a name change.. You could get all other information from the video directly.

Hi, how long is the ARN number generated valid for? Does ARN number expire? I have filled application on Goverment site on 3rd december and today is 19th december, I am planning to send documents now, will the ARN number still be valid or do I need to fill Government form again?
Some of you have asked me about the two way courier label. When I submitted the application in December, two courier labels were generated but one of my friend has submitted her application recently & has mentioned that VFS generates only 1 label for 2 way courier service now. Tip: I didn't have a proper address proof in the US because I'm a student and I wasn't on the lease. However, the people at the Atlanta VFS told me I could give a letter of undertaking (which should be notarized) from my roommate (who is on the lease) along with a utility bill (or other proof like DL) under her name and I was able to get the passport in that manner. Although they may deal with each case uniquely, this is what happened in my case.

@nandan gonchikar I didn't get the F1 stamped again. When we travel we just need to carry the old passport (that contains the visa) and the new passport together.
About the OPT/CPT I'm not sure if it'll cause a problem but I don't think it should because we always do have the old passport to show that the name has been changed

1. USPS or FedEx does, just call them & check before you visit them (not all stores do it)
2. Name change is completely different from split of name.. I would suggest you to follow checklist for name change. If I remember correctly, for a name change you would need two newspaper advertisements. If you have more questions for name change, plz contact VFS directly +1 8003209625
3. I am not aware of your individual case, but for my case I have listed all the docs explicitly in the video. Let me know if you have any additional questions

In the updated checklist ( Which can be downloaded from VFS directly ) it requires you to give your US Adress under "Other Address"
Make sure to give US adress.
Incase you din't but have already filed everything, you can try sending it. I had given both as indian address but i got my new passport without any problem

Quick Clarification - as you stated your full name is put in under First Name. Then we should say in the affidavit Old Name - Rita Singh LNU as Last Name was left blank. Please correct me.
- Does this affidavit have to be printed on plain paper?
- A split of the name doesn't require a newspaper advertisement, right?
- TWO Public/School documents - A letter/Form from the School and a Patient Form from the Pediatrics will work, right?
- We are planning to get signed by a Public Notary. The affidavit shows TWO names and addresses, Does parent will be valid to put in at the time of Notarization?

1 Indian address proof (the last section under miscellaneous) as while filling the form you would have provided atleast one Indian address. So plz give the proof for that- self attested

I watched the entire video again as I forgot what I did 8 months back. So at 25.55 minute, I see the auto-filled text against first name & last name says “as appears in passport”, so you need to fill that as per your current passport. I would also suggest you to call VFS help desk to be double sure as you would not want them to reject your application just for this field

USA address is not mandatory. So if VFS has made any changes recently, I am not sure about it. But if VFS has made that mandatory, I guess you could fill the ‘other’ address as the US one

I got my visa document corrected first, which was H1B in my case. Then I scheduled my appt with SSN office which asked for the corrected H1B & renewed passport. They issued a corrected SSN card in 2 weeks

The format is usually given for respective fields. For example on the Indian Govt. website DOB format mentioned is DD/MM/YYYY, so please use whatever format is mentioned for that field (I have filled it in the video as well if you want to refer)

This looks weird. Does the lease clearly say that it’s valid even now?
If not, you could ask the owner to sign another lease or just update the previous one with validity. Usual validity is 1 year for the lease but it’s Oct 2021 which is more than a year in your case, so that could be a reason for VFS to react this way.
If your lease is valid, I would suggest you to contact VFS helpline directly & ask for clarification

Hello, thanks for this useful info. I had a question regarding the "proof of address". My current lease is expiring on Apr 31st and I will be getting a new address after that. There is a good chance that the renewed passport comes after the lease is expired. What do you recommend in such a situation? Should I wait and submit the application after I get a new address or is there a provision to provide a different address for passport delivery (other than your proof of address)?
My situation was similar to yours, I used the same address, passport got delivered at this address after lease expiry & i requested the owner to mail it to my new address.
I had to travel India & hence it was a bit urgent but if you have time & would like to wait for another month, you could apply from your new address.
I don’t think you could provide a different address for delivery in the application..

To be honest, I haven’t come across this scenario before & I would not suggest you anything on which I am not sure..
It might create a problem later on, so I would suggest change the address proof document or rather change your address on your passport to the one that’s on your Aadhar card.. this way you could be rest assured..
One other suggestion would be to call VFS directly & get their advice..

Self-attested document means whatever proof you are submitting (in your case it is a copy of the Utility Bill) should have your sign and current date. You don't need any other letter.

No, it need not be notarized. I submitted my application without notarizing this one & have got the passport renewed.

is affidavit for change of appearance mandatory , if there is no significant change in appearance ? just the aging process :) Also if I submit the change of appearance affidavit , can I submit in Tatkal ?
In the checklist it mentions affidavit for change in appearance as mandatory. So I would suggest to please fill it. Even my appearance didn’t change much but I took a new pic & pasted it on the form (better to be safe).
I haven’t applied in tatkal so I am not 100% sure about the Tatkal documents but you could call the VFS directly to ask this question

Hi, I generated Courier label and its been weeks. Can i send the documents with the fedex courier label which is dated 3 weeks before or should I pay the fee again and generate new label
I don’t think there is a validity to courier labels generated so should be ok to use the same labels but I wouldn’t advise you anything that I am not 100% sure about, as I have not heard about a situation like this before.
I would suggest you to call VFS at +18003209625 & confirm about your specific case

Sorry, somehow I missed replying to your msg. I have uploaded a video on I797 form name updation. I filed for h1b amendment which rectified my name so I would suggest to that before changing name on SSN

In the online govt form, US address is not mandatory, instead 1 Indian address is mandatory

Yes they return old passport back.
You will carry both the passports everywhere so your US visa will be referenced from old passport

1st Question- they haven’t mentioned that specifically & I used black pen to make it look consistent with the printed application form. I would suggest if you haven’t already filled the form in blue, use black ink and if you have already filled it in blue ink, please cross verify it once with VFS directly.

I am applying for a new passport just to split my name. Could you tell me which passport service should be selected on the VFS Global website. Also, is there a way to get this service done by visiting the office, instead of mailing the documents to them as I do not want to lose any documents in the process?

If you are not renewing your passport then I would suggest you to call VFS to check if they provide any such service of just splitting the name without renewing the passport

Yes you would have to select the checkbox for ‘Address’ and ‘Others’. You will have to type in the field as shown in the video ‘Split of Name’.

How do I fill this affidavit. I am splitting my name. Because on the affidavit there is no way to differentiate between, new first name and last name, and old given name. For example if my given name was "ab cd" and now I am making "ab" as my first name and "cd" my last name. It would be still "ab cd". I don't if that makes any sense 😅
@@maroufpaul1175 I showed a sample copy of the affidavit in the video which clearly instructs how to fill that affidavit & where to put old versus new name. Could you try using the same format?

Your case would not be ‘split of name’ but I guess a name change for which VFS asks for advertisement, etc. I would suggest you to call VFS directly & ask about your specific case.
For your second question, visa doesn’t have husband’s name, it’s usually passport which has husband name. So if your misspelled name is on her passport, she will have to change that & if there is any visa which has husband’s name too then it should change as well

Sorry, I didn’t understand your question completely. I cross-checked the checklist & it doesn’t mention there to get the photo notarized. Do you have a different or new checklist?

@@ShivankKejriwal So if you travel with the new passport (with corrected name), you should have your name match in passport & visa, so I guess there might be some problem with the mismatch, so I would recommend correcting it after you return. But I haven’t faced this scenario so I am not the best person to advise, I would advise you to reach out to VFS for the best solution

1) If you don’t have this split already in any of your public documents, you would not be able to show it as split of name. I guess it would be considered name change
2) Since you are doing it for the first time, I would recommend you to contact VFS directly & ask what documents would be required for your case.

I am not 100% sure on this & I don’t want to misguide you in any way.. This case is considered as a name change so I guess newspaper advertisement would be required by VFS. I have not heard anything of this sort. But you can check once directly with VFS to be double sure.

What I have heard is you could get it changed when you go for visa renewal, so port authority should not create a problem. But I am not sure about this so please don’t quote me on this. I would suggest you to check with your School Immigration ofc or USCIS directly

No newspaper advertisement needed for split of name. That’s only required for a name change.. You could get all other information from the video directly.

Hi, how long is the ARN number generated valid for? Does ARN number expire? I have filled application on Goverment site on 3rd december and today is 19th december, I am planning to send documents now, will the ARN number still be valid or do I need to fill Government form again?
I haven’t heard about ARN expiry as such so guess it should be valid still.
