Man, this genre needs a revival

Tbf it’s about time, since at this point vaporwave has a double nostalgia factor.
It didn't go away, Windows96 and Luxury Elite continue making really good albums
Even tho I was born in the late 2000's, vaporwave and synthwave will always be my favorite aesthetic. it makes me feel nostalgic for somthing i was never apart of. this video gave me chills
"Nostalgic for something I was never apart of" honestly is a phenomenon I experience a lot for some reason

Nothing like a Polygon Donut video breaking down the origins of the Vaporwave aesthetic to start the day! I can never get enough of how you present whatever you're talking about in your videos.
This is THE video I needed
As a Hotline Miami enjoyer and someone who generally likes the theming of this aesthetic
THIS IS THE VIDEO!

As someone who grew up in the 90s, Vaporwave is a very hyperbolic look back on nostalgia, to the point of over-saturation, but it fits the whole "dream" aesthetic, like you're daydreaming of everything great about the past, all at once. Why they chose specifically 80s and 90s nostalgia, my guess is it was their childhood.
Great videos by the way, I've been really enjoying your channel. Keep up the great work!
thank you!!
@@PolygonDonut hi polegon donetie
@@PolygonDonuttbh I find vaporwave is a lot like weirdcore
There’s a couple of albums about dementia that sample music that sounds like vaporwave
Here’s a short list
A5 - Infinite horizons
(From Time to Time: Year 1)
A1 - I’ll keep holding on (Nowhere at the Millennium of Space: Stage 1)
Ive always thought that Vaporwave was a perfect future that never happened, turned into a faded memory that never was.
"The World of... _...Yesterday?_
I thought it said _"The World of Tomorrow!_ "
It's weird that a genre created to imitate nostalgia would later become nostalgic.
wow.. that sums it up!!
Vaporwave feels like one of those odd dreams you'd have while away from home on a roadtrip but not be able to remember all of it.
The whole video is a treasure. What did you said in the end, the ''meaning'' of vaporwave as not a political movement, but a collection of feelings and composing a piece of media. You can really enjoy vapor as a transcendental art form, as surrealism is. Like, it's the surrealism of the digital era, thinking about our dreams too, but images that represent the transcendent of those good feelings that you dreamt to live in a digital world. Even if the material used, logos, is real. This is a bit of nostalgia, but it's the futurism in it's new form. Not that blank white space with rounded big architectures, that was just a sketch without feelings and complexity. Thanks vapor artists!
thank you for watching :)
As a person who loves both weirdcore and vaporwave, i am so happy that you made videos on them. there are not many people covering vaporwave so thank you for making this.
I clicked literally the very instant I saw this.
Vaporwave is my realm, its music keeps me calm, its aesthetic is eye candy.

this is honestly incredible and it’s making me realize that vaporwave is basically dreamcore 2 in a lot of the pictures so i really like it
Dreamcore is probably inspired from vaporwave
@@PolygonDonut the similarities can be seen in the often wistful or surreal natures of both aesthetics, but I think a key distinction are the consumerist and technological undertones/themes of vaporwave, as you outlined in the video.
also: thanks for the amazing vid, thank you for being cool and have a lovely day^^
Vaporwave came before Dreamcore
"Vaporwave is an art movement, NOT a political statement."
The western social place (usa) has a severe fetish for anything political, so I guess that's why I suddenly love that statement.
Agreed. This is why I love vaporwave so much.
I can't wrap my head around how someone can literally have a part about consumerism as a part of vaporwave and then make such a statement ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@siddhartacrowley8759consumerism is apolitical.
Unless you disagree. In which case, ok commie.
@@siddhartacrowley8759yeah, that confuses me
I love these types of videos and I also love how the video is divided into sub categories it's a nice touch that makes it easier to follow along and it's just more organized that way keep up the good work Polygon Donut! 🙌
Thanks so much :)

Gotta love Vaporwave, Synthwave, and Retrofuturism. Some of the -punk styles are interesting as well, Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Atompunk, etc. Though ive learnt that those where under Retrofuturism when i did a school project.

@@MarcoHaan oh my god I need this to happen
@@MarcoHaan This was probably a joke, but FYI: -punk is specifically used to denote a technological focus and the political ramifications of it. Atompunk is nuclear power, solarpunk is solar power, steampunk is steam-based, etc.

Hello welcome to the squidward fun fact show todays fun fact is: spongebob is a sponge, squidward out
AAAAA MY FAVORITE AESTHETHIC! I adore vaporwave and I'm happy that it has a lot of exposure
“Sunsetcorp”, the guy that made the Nobody Here video, is also the same guy who made eccojams a couple years later. His real name Daniel Lopitan, and under his stage name Oneotrixpointnever he has gone on to produce The Weeknd’ latest album and he composed the score for the movie Uncut Gems
Minor correction on the bit about the 3D neon grid: that was always part of Synthwave and Synthwave didn't really birth from the same place as Vaporwave did (though that isn't to say the two don't cross paths; they absolutely do). While you're right in pointing to the birth of vaporwave being from sunsetcorp, Synthwave's origins are traced back to Kavinsky (although there is an argument to be made that Daft Punk's "Discovery" album could be seen as something akin to proto-Synthwave). So yeah, two VERY different scenes, but they have crossed over before (notably Synthwave artist Bart Graft and Vaporwave artist Bubble Keiki collaborating on the album "Emerald"). Though I do think the 3D neon grids are why so many people get Synthwave and Vaporwave confused with one another.
Other than that, pretty good breakdown of Vaporwave as an aesthetic.
Bro. U totally nailed it. This is probably the best video to describe vaporwave in its simplest terms. BTW the Memphis design group pretty much invented the original visual design aesthetic that we typically associate with the 80s and early 90s and early cgi and later on vaporwave. And Memphis group was also trying to critique consumerism and mainly protesting against hyperminimalism through the gratuitous use of crazy geometric patterns and shapes in garish colors all the way back in the 80s though ironically the Memphis design scheme ended up becoming representative of wealthy elites out of touch with reality back then until its revival in vaporwave
Thanks for the info, i didnt hear about the memphis group in my research damn
@@veipurr nice
My strongest vaporwave experience came when I was driving back from New York after a concert at 3 in the morning, 猫 シ Corp playing softly over the car speakers while my dad and sister slept and I explained vaporwave to my mom. I’m glad you mentioned night driving because I think it’s perfect for feeling those vibes
This guy can be a hilarious meme dispenser, an expert role-player and an amazing 2000s culture historian *all* at the same time. Respect, nothing but respect...
I’ve been pretty interested in the general Vaporwave aesthetic because of splatoon 2’s Octo expansion. It nails the aesthetic perfectly and encompasses surreal imagery such as toys, wacky inventions and game consoles just floating throughout the levels, and that added with the music and the dim neon lights lighting up the levels give a sense of liminality. And not to mention the final boss is a giant vaporwave statue
This video needs a part 2, but with Outrun/Retrowave, the quintessential "He's literally me" aesthetic
My favorite thing about Vaporwave were always the statues and neon to checkered tile. It's unfortunate the genre isn't as booming as it once was.
i think its kinda a shame vaporwave got memed so hard because its pretty cool
It got really stale and oversaturated towards the end of the 2010's, which is probably why people started memeing/parodying it. We had to move on from it eventually. I feel like the Y2K aesthetic and the DnB/jungle revival is basically an evolution of vapourwave.
Aesthetic= creativity+ a little bit of crazyness+ beautiful ❤️+ nostalgic or not+ art style or/and visual or/and Photoshop. , So much creativity and beauty.
idk if anyone has said this before but i genuinely think your more info like videos that arent fast paced are really relaxing and well made! just as enjoyable as your meme-y videos :)
I was super deep in the vaporwave fandom back when it was at its peak, I've recently come back to all the music and aesthetics I used to love so much and I honestly really hope the genre makes a comeback sometime in the future!!
I use to be really into Vaporwave back in 2016 and listen to it all the time so in a way it brought me back a nice little memory of some of the better moments from that year alone.
vaporwave is genuinely such a comfort genre for me
I want to read a book written by polygon donut, imagine how good it would be
Alright, im done with the pepole spamming "ok", at first it was funny, but now its starting to get annoying, just because a stupid ass guy spammed "ok" you dont need to do the same, dont be like him

The music and feel of Vaporwave is the closest thing I will ever get to describing something as flawless. If you want to bring a sense of inner peace to your vibes, This is the genre for you. I highly recommend checking out albums like Late Night Delight and Summer Paradise whenever you get the chance. Good job as per usual, Pongon. I can’t wait to see what you’ll do next
The thing that I loved the most about Vaporwave was that it sorta put me in touch with a time and culture I never got to experience. I was born in the 2000s and although I’m very happy with experience that I got, there was just something about the 80s and 90s that was just so interesting to me.
The music (for me) was very relaxing and at times helped me focus when Lofi couldn’t. And the art style was definitely a breath of fresh air compared to the overly simplistic designs of stuff we have today.
I miss Vaporwave, it was fun!
Vaporwave feels like some kind of treasure that was always out of reach; being out of reach was what made it feel so mysterious and exotic, now that it is obscured and buried under many other things means that when one roadblock finally faded another one came up in it's place.
Now that I am a capable adult who is less affected by the gatekeeping I suffered as a weak and vulnerable child I feel inclined to dive in and explore what was flashed to me and quickly revoked from my vision.

My favourite thing about vaporwave is the aesthetic.
Honestly, even though I was born in the late 2000s, I have a soft spot for this aesthetic. Something about it gives me nostalgia for a time I never even experienced and it also helps that I have a liking towards more vintage stuff/tech.
@0:20 hey! thats my art :) :)
Looks awesome
Ive gotta say that green hill in sonic is kinda reminiscent of vaporwave
The polygon palm trees, flowers with impossible colors and the music feeling fast and slow at the same time.
Edit: The special stage is also pretty vaporwave with once again polygon birds turning into polygon fish with odd but vibrant colors with the vaporwave music with sonic in a spinning colorful maze trying to get a gem
Why the heck did i make 2 whole paragraphs about sinic vaporwave?
Edit: autocorrect made it sinic, why?
I listened to a playlist for Mallsoft on Spotify today and I am now completly hooked. I noticed that a lot of these songs, especially the ones with jazz samples have this somewhat melancholic, somewhat eerie feeling of longing that ends up being pretty powerful.
What's cool about vaporwave is that it evolved since then and is still very much alive, Windows96 and FM Skyline are some examples of recent vaporwave
I actually Waited for so long for this
I'm actually so happy oh my god thank you prlonglon
Love the video, thank you for including music sources.
Ok so I just finished watching and I can say that I really like the work you put into this type of video. I hope there's gonna be a lot more of them!
And I also have feedback for you "Tierlisting games based on their doors" video! The DOOM 1993 rating was not accurate. Not only can you use any texture when creating a door in doom, hence the hidden doors, but there are also at least 12 textures that have the word "DOOR" in their name iirc. This ofc only applies to DOOM 1 and 2. Final DOOM (Plutonia and TNT: Evilution, two mods that were released commercially by id Software themselves) most likely contain way more door textures.
If you plan making more door tierlist videos, I'd recommend covering Terraria. It features 45 doors of completely different designs, even if they seem quite flat.
If you took your time reading this, thanks a lot! Much love!
One thing you didn't point out is that the UA-cam channel "sunsetcorp" releases music now as Oneohtrix Point Never. He recently was the executive producer of The Weeknd's latest album.
So hyped to see a new video from you!
Would love to see a synthwave video
Resonance-like Vaporwave in TV and VCR are so aesthetic!!!
i love whenever polygon posts about aesthetic topics. polygon explains these aesthetics in the coolest and most creative way ive ever seen and i love it!!!!
I lovee when you make videos on asthetics its just so relaxing
It's mostly the nostalgia(even if i was born in 2005) and look of the aesthetic that i like. Especially all of the colors and the water.
In the past 2 years ive fallen in love with Vaporwave, Synthwave and other stuff like Cyberpunk and that kind of ones so much..i really hope they get bigger some time
While I watch this, Macintosh is playing on the radio on my side, great timming
Polygon why do you keep awakening my love for these aesthetics
Another aesthetic video :D
Oh heck yeah! Love it. Also a cool piece of vaporwave-ish art is the old logo for the cit of Orem if anyone wants to look that up. I think it’s cool.
The originator is, coincidentally, The Originator (aka DJ SCREW) who was planting the roots of Vaporwave in the late 90’s and early 00’s. Listen to his chopped and screwed ragga tracks. He was a decade ahead of his time.
hey pogon, I just wanted to say that recently you've become my biggest comfort youtuber and your videos are one of the few things that keep me going. im going through an extremely hard time of my life right now and just hearing your voice, laughing at your silly videos and in general being a part of this community is helping me a lot. sorry I got so serious but im genuinely very attached to your content and you as a person as well so yeah, im just glad you're here posting your silly stuff
A PonGon video about the aesthetic of Denpa would be incredible
I actually am Vaporwave-time boundaries old, and only quite recently got into the genre.
And i enjoy it genuinely. Even, the more vague and sometimes tonewise deliberately glitchy/wobbly effect to recreate that vintage touch, the better.
Love the aesthetics as well.
Altough there were people already in 2016 saying the genre is fading, i see that it's actually thriving.
I love how you break down and explain aesthetics pongon! It's really easy and simple for people to understand and a lot of people probably find it entertaining too! Like me. Keep up the amazing work! :)
I hope people go back to using vaporwave to what it originally was meant to be.
One of my favorite youtubers talking about my favorite aesthetic
Today's a good day :)
Crazy how now those nostalgic driven songs becamr nostalgic themselfs
To me this kinda seems like a mix of dreamcore, weirdcore, and glitchcore, glitchcore being the cause of the intense colors, weirdcore being the cause of the strange things, and dreamcore being the cause of unusual nostalgia and the messages like “do you want to escape” and “nobody here”.
Vaporwave came before all of those aesthetics pretty much, so i'd say they are all branch-offs/inspired by it
probably but all those terms were made up way after vaporwave was conceptualized so im not too sure it fits
I feel like pongon will become an aesthetic in the future just because their editing style is so unique and interesting visually
LOVE this video AAGRHH !! It explained Vaporwave perfectly and the music choices in the bg were Perfect !!!! I got into Vaporwave about 5-ish years ago when I listened to this one Vaporwave mix on UA-cam and it immediately stuck to me. I quite like how serene vaporwave imagery is, and that music associated with it is similarly calm. I wasn’t alive during the 90s, but even I can get a feeling of nostalgia from vaporwave.
There are some vaporwave looking videogames out there, I've only played two: PUSS (You are a cat and I think you have to defeat the devil(??)), and Broken reality (You are inside of a digital world and there is some weird lore that I just can't understand) , both are great games and I really recommend them.

Stumbled into Vaporwave/Synthwave/Chillwave/etc after having heart surgery 2 years ago. While I was recovering, my body was weak and practically disabled while my mind was listless and floating. I didn't want to do anything and I felt like a part of me died on that operating table because I actually woke up during it. Not a pleasant experience, but I digress. The video I stumbled on was called "Long Nights" by Asthenic. I sat there transfixed by the music and the visuals. Something about the feeling I got from it all spoke to my soul. That vid opened me up to a whole world I never even knew existed.
You state here that the genre basically went the way everything else does when it gets a little too popular - dead or tarnished. For me personally it all still lives on and I don't see myself ever falling out of love for it.
