Yeah I got a jaguar body for $35, a 24.75" neck with block inlays for $45 and humbuckers that match SD in every way for $20 each. $10 for putting stainless steel frets on the neck and I made my own pickguard. Crazy how cheap parts are these days and they were all super high quality.

my two oldest guitars now are a '65 Gibson SG I bought for $150 in 1970, and a '68 Gibson SG Jr. I bought together with a '55(?) old beat-up tweed Fender Super amp (2x10 original speakers, 30watts from 2x6L6 tubes) - paid $250 for BOTH guitar and amp in 1974. sold the amp a year later for $100. wish I had that one back. but I've still got the SGs. Also in 1970 - bought a brand new Marshall Super Lead 100 head for $375. In 1968 I bought a brand new Fender Tele w/hard-shell case for $170.
    THAT was the golden age!

In 1984 I paid almost $1000 for a new made in Japan strat. It had a locking nut and a crappy trem that broke quickly.

Just a good time to buy guitars no matter your price range. To the point of the original comment, I’m still going to worry about damaging a Gibson much more than a firefly, and even though a firefly still feels great to play, I bought that to take to work where I’m with kids all day, and tossing it around. I’m probably the outlier, but I look at the features first and then the brand name. Resale value is a very small part of my decision making. I’ve always purchased prepared to never let the guitar go or let it go for a loss. I don’t think the name versus features is worth the cost. The difference seems to be minimal and usually fixed with a setup or cheaper upgrade than buying top tier.

We've been in that golden age of lower priced guitars for a while now. I picked up an Ibanez Artcore AS83 back in 2006/07 for just over $350 brand new that was stupidly good. Waaay better than most similarly priced guitars, let alone 335 clones. I swapped the pickups and wiring harness because that's what I was doing at the time, not because it needed it. That thing was solid as a rock tuning wise and plays great to this day.
AFAIK, most of todays high end guitars are just "safe" invest properties. Agree with Kiesel but then I always like Carvin too.

I work in a small guitar shop that sells everything from Squiers to Master Built Fender Custom Shop guitars and beyond. The way to know if you've spent too much money on your guitar is simple. If you never take your guitar out of your home or use it to play with other people because it's so expensive, then you should have bought a cheaper guitar. Guitars are meant to played. But if you buy a $9K Master Built Fender and play it all the time, then more power to you.
The less expensive guitars are perfectly fine instruments that you could gig with without changing a thing. But to compare those inexpensive guitars with custom shop guitars it's like comparing a Hyundai with a Mercedes. Both of those cars will get you where you need to go, but if you've ever driven a Mercedes, you KNOW they have qualities the Hyundais don't have.

He made the body, neck, wound the pickups, and it’s the best guitar I’ve ever played. I ask him about building me one just like it, and the price point is pretty high, but it’s a guitar to really fall in love with. You would have to love it and keep it, because it would be hard to get a fraction of your money back out of it, if you wanted to sell it. The price and value of guitars is really a crazy thing, and I believe that to be now more than ever.

I pick up high end guitars and mid range guitars.. you’re right, nothing exciting other than the usual craftsmanship improves a bit n the high end guitars. The guitar industry needs something to wow folks. What I would like to see to really send guitars into the next level is if they came with on board effects loops (O.B.E.L.). Jerry Garcia used them, but they work with any genre. Or how about pick ups that just click in and out soo that we can easily swap out a humbucker for a p90. Or a magnet on the face to hold a steel slide. Or all the above. How’s about having bolt on necks come from the factory with a shim already under the neck because that makes tapping more resonant. The feel like we need a big update to the standard and not just talking about fret wire material because that’s getting old & wears down leveling tools too much.

Everything on your wish list is already available. Things like interchangeable pickups don't sell well. Effects on the guitar are self limiting- how many do you use and how many fingers are available to use them? It's a custom application or everybody would buy the Roland-type stuff out of necessity. It will take time for the right technology to surface.

I agree. I've owned Gibson and Fender guitars since 1972 . Many of them were made in the late 1950's into the 1960's. Back then they just called used guitars and they weren't all great with magic or mojo either. You could get all kinds of Gibson and Fender guitars used for under $500.00. When they became vintage in the late 1970s and 1980s and prices went sky high. They use to be affordable, but not anymore. I decided in 2000 to never pay more than a $400.00 to $600.00 for any guitar anymore. Right about then Epiphone started coming out with the ES 335s and Les Pauls and more. They were made in Korea and I was surprised and happy to see a Guitar company that was making the kinds of guitars I use to own at a decent price. Fender has just released their new line of Hot Rod amps. I bought a Hot Rod Deluxe 40 Watts with a 1x12" speaker for $350.00.00 and 60 watt Hot Rod Deville with 4x10" speakers at $450.00. I bought 2 Epiphone Les Pauls a '56 Gold Top for $400.00 and a Les Paul standard with Gold hardware in a Burgundy Flame Top finish for $400.00. All of these were new from Sam Ash and they cost about what 1 Gibson Les Paul would cost back then. I'd rather have 2 great amps with 2 very nice guitars, rather than just 1 very nice Guitar.

MIA Hamer guitars are an exceptional value. They never really appreciated like some boutique guitars. I’ll use Alembic basses as an example for appreciating. I bought my MIA Hamer 5-string bass at a tent sale back in the early 90’s. It was about $850.00 Out the door. I’d be lucky to get $1000 for it today. It’s probably the best built instrument that I own. I prefer playing it over my vintage Fender basses and my Pedulla bass which is considered a boutique bass. Although I have a decent collection of well built instruments, my favorite player bass is $200 MIM Craigslist Fender Jazz bass. I hope the folks that are just starting out realize that in our modern world, a guitar doesn’t have to be expensive to be good.

What you said about $1000 guitars looking amazing and $2000 guitars looking drab is so true. I have a PRS SE 594 that I got last year and S2 594 10th anniversary S2 model that I got in late January. The super premium $2400 guitar (MSRP, I did get it for about 10% less) with the PRS USA pickups looks drab. The flame has dead spots and it just doesn't pop. Meanwhile, the SE has a wonderful veneer that just pops all over, and it's got every bit the flame figuring and color shifting in the light that a solid maple top has. I'm really kinda beside myself with how disappointing the S2 ended up being. And it's dumb because it's a great guitar and tons of fun to play, it just looks so much worse.

What about Alembic and/or Minarik? Lava-Drops? I think the issue you have with the expensive "mainstream" brands is their customer base has them locked in to their "classic" designs. Gibson, for example, can't even change the headstock angle or heel joint, add a volute, without their customer base losing their collective minds. Heck, just go with a thinner faster neck or change the fret board radius.

Yea but i still want a Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop 59 reissue with a crazy flame top and im willing to pay that $6,000 price whenever i get the money saved up. Ive played for 17 years and own a 2016 Gibson Les Paul Traditional i paid $1700 for new. Love it but wont sell it. 1700 seems cheap nowadays

My Pete Thorn Suhr is pretty dang cool. And my Ibanez Az2204 Prestige KB Koa Brown is impossible to find they only made 16 for the US I think. Anyone who bought a Dimebag guitar is pretty lucky. The Fretwork on cheap geetars is really bad. I’ve got a bunch of expensive and cheap guitars so I should never have to pay for another guitar in theory but right now it’s almost impossible to sell a cheap guitar after you’ve loaded it with upgrades . Haven’t tried selling an expensive one yet.

I don't mind inexpensive guitars so long as the construction is done with care and the parts aren't cheap. The ESP LTD line has a reputation for making quality guitars at reasonable prices.

It's very ironic that after decades of only being able to afford mid-tier import instruments that always needed a ton of work or modifications to make them sound and play better, I'm now being told I'm in the wrong for finally buying a higher priced US instrument that has all the little touches I've always wanted from the get-go, and doesn't need to have it's neck adjusted every 4 months. Can't win 😂

It's just inflation. The standard has always been 1 months median salary for a "quality" guitar. The term quality, should probably be exchanged for US made. There's lots of quality coming from Asia for half the money.

you're right there....there's nothing "new" at the top end...but variations of the same thing from the 50s and 60s....BUTat the lower and mid price range...the "affordable" end...there really is competition and interesting guitars.....i think it's good.....but i must stop buying.....can only play one at a time anyway....cheers.

My local Big Box Guitar Store near Toronto there's good cheaper guitars for $500 and several expensive ones for $6000.
The days of the *$1000 Fender or Gibson* made in America are gone.
A company like Kiesel is a rare thing.
The Godin brands are also very good value for new guitars, sadly they resell for little.

Demographics is an overpowering factor that will soon skew the supply/demand dynamics. Replacement of consumer-aged cohorts is shrinking across the developed (disposable income wielding) world, and the glut of consumer goods incl guitars will oversupply the market driving prices down. Nice gear will always hold value, but if golden means lower prices, long term they’re only going down.

  • @TheCleaner6969

In the end you are buying a piece of wood painted. I could never understand how anyone would part with 1K or especially 7K on a guitar. I use to collect certain things & stopped. You never know when the market will drop from under your feet. You want to collect something that'll you'll never lose money on gold & silver. It's like cars. Roads are crap, people are jerks, & they go down in value. The ones that don't it's like boats bust out another thousand. You're constantly putting money into them. Just think your 7K guitar gets a chip or the neck warps.

There's absolutely no reason to spend big money on a guitar unless you're looking for bragging rights and to me, that just means you're not thinking for yourself. Just buy a cheap guitar with a decent neck and fretboard and then upgrade it. Spending thousands on a guitar is ridiculous, IMHO.

I can afford the gear I want, Les Paul's strats etc and make great money, so it's not jealousy. Now it seems like it's a competition to have the best gear. If players spent more time playing what you have, learn than watch vids drooling over gear you will be a better player ok rant over. Going to go practice
