I have +15 resumes and applications out and no calls 😭 Id be happy to start with a shovel! My fingers are cross, I just got certified to run wheel loaders , excavators and rock trucks last month! Just trying to get my foot in the door, but no calls yet...
Honestly the big thing keeping me out of it is how common 12, 14, 16 hour days are, as well as 6 and sometimes 7 day work weeks, sure i love using the equipment, but i also enjoy my life off the job site

Part of the problem is many companies have been passing up guys in their mid 30s for the last 10 to 15 years. Another problem is people in this age group who could be in the workforce instead got worthless degrees or are making money via social media.

I’m in collage for this right now, already have some past experience operating to go along with it. I’m exciting to get a decent paying job. But like some other people have mentioned there are problems in this trade, a big one being that no body wants to teach the younger guys how to operate or how to be a good operator cuz they’re worried they will be replaced. Another issue is companies hiring for operators then you get stuck labourering instead. Another issue is companies want a labourer/operator/mechanic all in one but they only want to pay labourers wages. 3 trades equals 3 wages The guys I’ve met who are knowledgeable enough to do all 3 usually have been around long enough to run a job site. And expect anywhere from 40 to 60 dollars an hour to do so. And I don’t blame them. East coast of Canada wages for an operator start at 18 to 20 bucks an hour and that simple isn’t enough. McDonald’s pays 15 ffs. You’ll get closer to 30 if your with the city or another unionized company but most operators I see arnt making more then 25 bucks an hour
I love the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. If it weren't for my disability I would still be run an excavator or a wheel loader. Great work great work good pay, doing something that most people can't do and I did it for fun.
@@OhhhJP I broke my neck and back in four different places leaving me with some diminished motor skills. I was a paralyzed for a short time as my spinal cord was damaged. I lost the ability to turn my head and body far enough to safely operator any type of machines. I have tried to run an excavator here and there just to see if I could, but my leg strength isn't good enough to get up and down from any machines. I could never get a job in the construction industry, let-a-lone any kind of job because I am considered 100 percent disable. I hurts my pride and manhood more than anything to be disabled because I now have to depend on others to survive. That is not living that is just taking up space.
Look at your local trade union for an apprenticeship and earn while you learn. Operating Engineers are heavy equipment operators that have guys that want to train you and work in every state. But all trade unions have apprenticeship programs and you can make 50k-100k as an apprentice

The problem is the industry is racist. Unions in the tri state area won’t hire black people , nor will they allow them to go through the apprenticeship program
It’s not it’s a shitty industry and a lot of shitty people run it that’s why you can’t keep people and you don’t pay enough for them to live unless you’re working 6070 hours a week every single week all year long and then turn around to do it again next year and not spend time with your family or have any money to spend it all because it cost 11 too high so you wanna talk about keeping people maybe it’s time you take a look in the mirror

My kid joined the army National guard as an equipment operator then joined the Union with their army certifications
