- The 1004 foot ship James R. Barker blasted an incredibly loud master salute as it arrived from Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. I was able to capture the exciting atmosphere by the Lift Bridge and with the crowd as I set the stage for this awesome ship to arrive. Also, a few shoutouts to boat friends that approached me before recording this video.

The #1 ship whistle in the world. No contest !
Jon! I’m 100% pinning your comment to the top because I totally agree!🤙👋📣⛴️
@@vibewithmike it's impressive but subjective. I like the orginal steam horns like on the Alpena and the Ryerson (please get her back in service - that is the best horn on the Great Lakes hands down).
John, I agree with you! You’re right, all of these whistle/horns are subjective. They are all cool, though. Boat friends, I have included a link so you can hear the Ryerson steam whistle right here. ua-cam.com/video/EYYRLGPRDYY/v-deo.html
@@vibewithmike I personally think the Reyerson sounds similar to a cruise ship whistle. Just my ears. Love the Barker!!
@@karengausman1459 you are right, it’s like a cruise ship, all of these horn/whistles are unique and cool. It’s like the personality of the vessel.
This has got to be my favorite salute from all the ships! No one barks like the Barker! Thanks for sharing Mike!!🙂
Johan, I’ll bet people could hear that salute from miles away? My goodness, what an unbelievable display for the crowd.👍📣⛴️👋
@@vibewithmike If that was the only time you would ever see a great lakes ship it would certainly leave one hell of an impression!🤣
Johan! Oh, yeah! Not only would it leave an impression, but you might not be able to here for a few days!

James R Barker "King of the Great Lakes". Damn I love listing to the Barkers bark. My favorite ship. Thanks Mike!
Kenneth, you and I both brother. You can actually hear people cheering about that bark in the crowd! It was legit.👍⛴️📣
Beautiful day in Duluth, nice crowd.
Jim, the crowd was having a wonderful time. The horn/whistle was crazy loud.📣📣👍⛴️
Boat friends, the official decibel reading for this video was 109.7! I’m sorry I didn’t mention it.
I think its awesome that the good captain likes people showing interest and appreciate the work these ships do....thank you captain and crew !!!!❤️
Thank you mike 👍

However, we did get some rain today. I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
What a bone crushingly awesome salute. JRB never lets us down!
MotorCity EMT, The captain never let us down, always let it rip! I see that you are an EMT! Thank you for your service out there helping people!🤙👍👋🙏
Never a disappointment. Nothing says America better than 123 dB of the JRB. Thank you for what you do Mr. Mike. I'm one happy boat friend.
Edward, I was trying to zoom in on your UA-cam profile photo, what kind of truck is that? That’s a big one! Hey, I really appreciate you dropping the comment brother. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate people that love ships and we can share a passion together. I wish you all the best, nice chatting with you, let’s do it again soon!!!!!

Most people run from bad situations and you were the one going to it. Thank you! I hope to keep chatting with you in the future about the ships. It’s a pleasure.
Never heard a whistle salute like that one…look at the people come a’running! Amazing, TY Mike…
Glenn, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video brother. I’m glad that we are typing because I wouldn’t be able to hear you right now after that horn!😂📣⛴️🤙
I love watching these videos with the ships coming in. This must be so daunting standing there watching them sail past. What an experience!

Hello Mike. What a beautiful early evening. Looks like a good number of people out to catch her. You were smart to stay on the hill! She is so popular with all of us that finding a spot is a huge challenge. She IS a beauty and never ever gets old to see her!! That whistle of hers always gives me goosebumps. Don't know why. Thank you so much for "catching" her. She is a huge favorite of mine for sure. Take care my friend and hope you had a great Saturday. Hope to catch you later in the comments. 🙋🙋🚢🚢. Awesome video!!!

What a beautiful day at Duluth -- gateway to the Arrowhead region.
When is the Duluth Airshow this year? I have to get up Nort for that don't cha know.
Todd, can you imagine having this horn as a wake up call? You definitely would not need to hit the snooze button! I’m glad you asked about the airshow, it’s a few weeks away, blue angels will be out in Flying High, check it out here. www.duluthairshow.com/

So great
I hope to see the Barker when I am in Duluth this September

Wow best boat salute ever
Katherine, no doubt, extremely impressive salute
Lol all i can do was laugh at the horn and it looked liked it vibrated the whole ground 😂😂
Antwaun! It was like a legitimate earthquake!
I think Mike should invest in a Seismometer and start measuring ground movement in addition to his decibel readings!
I will look into that. 😂🚢

When she is finally retired, I hope Barker's horns are preserved in a museum along with a Hi-Fi recording of her Master's Salute. 🫡
I love that you are watching this older video and that you were talking about this. You are so right, how about this, what if we take the actual horns and have them in the museum connected so each day at a certain point they blow those horns so we never forget.

As a kid in the late ‘60s, you could write to Canada Steamship Lines for posters (about 80cm x 120cm) of their new ships. I collected about six. I still have them in the shipping tubes. At the time I imagined that I would become a Great Lakes Captain. I didn’t but I did have a life sailing recreationally-mostly Lake Huron. I have always loved the Lakes.
That would be really cool to see those posters you have. Bolt nerds like me would love to see that.
