Im not much of a 50mm but bought 50/1.2 and sold it last year. Great lens but really heavy and big. Definitely will pickup 1.4 and 35/1.4 later this year.
You can see directly that the bokeh is a bit more busy, but who cares!? This is a spot on lens. We need these midrange lenses in our systems and thx Nikon that they're stepping back and bring back the old lines back. Not everyone is willing to pay 1500€/$ for a 50mm F1.4. We always had these around 500€/$ lenses in times of DSLRs. I do a lot of event-photography and I don't want or need these expensive lenses. I want it small, lightweight and for a normal price tag. If it breaks, who cares - get a new one. Sh+t happens but you don't want it to happen to your 50mm F1.2 at a stupid event.
Agree. Small, inexpensive and a good performer is what most people want. Those that have the budget and the desire for the expensive high performance glass will opt for something different. Great to have options
Thank you Bobby, much appreciated. It's incredible how Nikon manages to bring new 1.4s so good and so affordable compared to the older F lenses. I will keep my 1.8 S but I am seriously interested in testing this. Hope to see a 85 and maybe a 105. the old 105 1.4 was and still is one of the top 3 Portrait lenses on any Nikon system in my eyes. The other one would be 200 f2
It's interesting that we find ourselves in a place where the f/1.8 is actually a stronger performer optically than the f/1.4 variant. Not taking anything away from the Z 50 f/1.4, which I'm sure is a very good performer. But when the Z 50mm f/1.8 S arrived it was repeatedly being compared favorably to the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 optically; high praise for a lens that costs 1/8th the price of the Otus.
i have the 35/1.4Z and it's really priced really well for its specs (STM with MFS, which is the new Nikkor CRC or Floating Element) ...and it's up there with the best modern 35 prime lenses. looking at the 50/1.4Z specs it's similar and based on the sample images it's LoCA is even well-corrected (less green/purple bokeh fringing). so it looks like another hit for Nikon.
@@Liljoozy STM is stepping motor...but akshully the key spec is MFS (STM or not is not that important to me) which makes the lens consistently sharp at wide open apertures throughout this focus range.
Great video with very good shots. I like those new f/1.4 lenses because to me backgrond bokeh is more pleasing to the eye than absolute sharpness. But Voigtländer lenses are also very tempting for my Nikon Zf.
@@Abc1987 reality is the differences are very minor I feel. The 1.8 may be slightly sharper but the 1.4 is lighter and has better close focus and a control ring
Currently have the 50 1.8 although had this been released at the time of purchase I would have likely taken this over the 1.8. Hoping they come out with an 85mm in this lineup as that is one prime I am looking to upgrade from the f mount version to z-mount and haven't yet pulled the trigger on the Z 1.8 version. Anyways great video as always Bobby!!
Nice and I agree I think this might be better overall than the 1.8s but guess it’s all down to use case. For my style of photography I like to soften and make my images more dreamy and I also like close up detail shots so for me this is the lens I would choose. I think pair this with the xf and you’ve got a fantastic street/walk around package. Really interesting what Nikon are giving us here as well as the choice 👏
Is there actually a reason to go for this on the Zf over the 1.8S? The difference in max aperture is meaningless for light gathering with the Zf's ISO performance IMO. Nikon's specs list it as basically the same size as the 1.8S and weight, and it's uh... a lot less sharp. Zf is a 2K body too. 40/2.0 is a good budget option. Just don't understand who this lens is for tbh.
It’s about the same as the 1.8 S I feel. I think this lens having the faster aperture and better close focus with the control ring is a good option for those that want these options. If the 1.8 is good for you then stick with that. It’s a good question as to why someone would get this or not. Will see what the market says
