Your idea has helped me quite a bit, so here's my hint: use water. Not necessarily together with dremel, but pliers too work better in a bucket of water. First, glass is more brittle in water (cutting glass with scissors viral "lifehack"); second, dust and shatters remain in it rather than fly all over the place. Diamond files and grinding stones also eat glass better in water. The height and width of bucket must be chosen according to your height and preferred working position. An inch below water surface is usually sufficient to stop glass shrapnel.
Cheers TCME the first one took a few different approaches but now I'm not doing too bad. Hopefully finishing the glass soon and then on to the stand. When I find time!
Hello! I’m a beginner with stained glass work and i’m trying to get better with my cutting skills, I was wondering if you could share the name of the dremel and bits that you use for it? Great work!
Hi Olivia, thanks for watching my video. Here’s a couple of links to the Dremel and the bits. But first I have to state a couple of points just for safety and freedom of choice etc…. which are all rotary tools can do the same job, cheap or expensive it doesn’t have to be Dremel (I’m not sponsored by them but it’s my preferred brand) and also never cut glass without safety glasses or a good mask. Sorry to be so obvious but better safe than sorry. I was new to cutting glass when I made this video and it turned out nice. Check out my Tiffany style lamp for the result…. Hi Jennifer, silicosis is indeed a terrible thing it’s why I never cut glass without my super fine particulate mask and I urge all viewers to follow suit. thanks for reminding me to point it out to anyone watching.
Hi David, well as you can see it worked for me! Just remember to protect your eyes and make sure you wear a mask as the glass dust is very bad if you breath it. Good luck with your project.
Hi Martha I managed to cut 12 drips and another 4 or 5 that ‘didn’t look quite right' and one I dropped and broke all without water. I think water is used on tile cutting to cool the diamond disc but I thought I’d give it a try and see what happened. I found it works great. The diamond cutters bits for the Dremel are relatively cheap and I managed to cut all the above and a few of the pieces in the lamp before having to change it. Thanks for the question and also thanks for watching my channel…..
Hi Rylee this was my first attempt ever at cutting glass and I didn’t have the level of experience you obviously must have. I kept trying to just cut it but it kept snapping the 'drip' hence I had to find a different method and this was it. I have various glass cutters and I can cut straight lines and curves quite easily now but still not as round as those drips. Thanks for watching.

Good to see it is progressing well by the look of the stack of pieces you have already cut.

Just a note: Those bits cost $35-$40 each and are good for about 20 minutes before all the diamond wears off. 😐

Is it not necessary to use a bit of squirted water onto the piece?

Glad to help….. you can buy packets of those cutters on most of the big retailers online they’re called 'diamond burrs'. Let me know how you get on
Oh and as someone just pointed out….. ‘Don’t forget to wear your filter mask'…….
Buy a $8 glass cutter... so much faster and better... score and tap. I worked with stained glass for 5 years.. my father for 25.
