Proof Dr. Crawford knows the Language of Birds: While I was watching this video at 4am, a black-capped chickadee flew into my studio, perched on a lamp, and started quietly watching the entire thing. Of course, now it won't leave and I think it's "sullying" most of my books, but still a pretty cool classmate.

The Danes were too grizzly for the Swedes, it seems. Their strength was just un-bear-able. King Hrolf really clawed his way through those Swedes.

Greetings from Denmark. Just found your Website. When I was a kid about 1964 or so, the Story you are telling was printed as a kind of Cartoon called "the Classics", with Drawings and all. I am sorry to say that I don`t have it anymore but I remember the rest of it well.

Thanks for the video. The same motif of sending back all but a handful of the best troops is also found in the biblical story of Gideon. They start with an army but arrive with a small unit of commandos, who succeed where an army might not have.

Man when you mentioned it I had a big grin on my face because I thought it was so darn cool.
That'd be such a cool thing they could put in a game.

Thank you Dr Crawford. I'd love to hear you talk about the culture and language of the Anglo Saxons in England at the time of the king whose funeral ship was found at Sutton Hoo - as an ex worker in silver and gold I am fascinated by the superb beauty and craftsmanship of the funeral goods found there.

Could ‘Egill’ be a possible cognate with the OE ‘Eadgils’? I know ‘Aðils’ is the accepted cognate. Could explain the varied traditions of the saga. Great videos as always

_Den flyr ej ilden, som over den springer_ , as Hrolf Krake said when he and his men leaped over the fire.
If I remember my sagas, the "end" is cut a bit short in this one.

    Hello Jackson Crawford.
I don't remember if you've made a video about the etymology of the name for "bear"? As I understand it, this word really just means "brown", and the oroginal indo-european name was something different.
The original indo-european can be seen in the greek word *árkos,* latin: *ursus,* hittite: *ḫartákka,* sanskrit: *ṛ́kṣa,* and brythonic celtic: *art.* The indo-european word is reconstructed as *h₂ŕ̥tḱos,* and in it's germanic form it would be something like *urhtaz,* in english it would be *ourt,* and in and the Balto-Slavic *irśtvā́.*
My question is: What would it be in old norse? *Års* ?

Is there an assigned location for Hrani's farm? It must be thought somewhere along the way from Lejre to Uppsala. Given Hrólf's party comes upon it twice, Hrani could have two separate farm locations since the translation I read used "another small farm" in its descriptor as opposed to them seeing the exact same farm, though it does later say "there another night", which could also imply the same geographical location, but a different farm structure. This is an acceptable paradox, but the question of where this farm exactly is along the way still stands. Has anyone taken a stab at where these three nights happen?

A LOT of European cultures did. Or, at least, they used systems tending toward base twelve; hence, 12 inches in a foot, for example.
