Miles, How do you take care of the horrible chemical smell coming from the fuel filters that you use on your aspirators? I hooked mine up to an aquarium air pump and it took two weeks of blowing air through them before I was able to get rid of the smell (and taste).
Hi Jack! We have not had that experience at all! Did you order them directly from our links? If so, there may be an issue with that provider and we might need to find a different aspirator filter to recommend. So sorry you're having this issue.
@@MilesMaxcer I just check and did order from your link. There are a couple of us in AZ that have had the same problem. Blowing the air through them is a solution that worked though.
Im sorry because i know this question has little to do with ant keep but i am at a loss for who to ask. I figure if you know how to keep them alive, then you know what makes them die. Im doing some wood working and found what i think is a larvae from carpenter ants. I thought having it dry for a number of years would have killed everything but found a couple live grubs and am wondering if i should abandon the slab of wood i have been working which is 4' by 4' by 3" thick.
I highly doubt thisll be seen by Miles but Id better ask before I forget When you first tell people that you study ants for a living, how often do they ask "how do I get rid of teh ants in my house" and what do you tell them if they do ask this?
Hi Thomas! Yes, I get that question all of the time! I usually remind them that ants are nature's janitors, and more often than not, ants are in our homes because we've done a poor job of cleaning up our food. I usually inquire more about their particular situation to ensure they don't have an ant colony actually living inside their home. Thanks for the question! -- Miles
This is going to be very interesting! Also, come springtime and fall, can you please do more expedition videos, they are very interesting, educational, and honestly satisfying.
I completely agree with field work being one of my favorite types of videos because it not only helps new people to the hobby have better understanding it also scratches that itch that we all have in wanting to go out and do it on days that we cannot!
Dorylinae in the US really aren't THAT hard to keep. I've successfully kept two large colonies of Neivamyrmex nigrescens over the length of the experiment with little issue.
Can I use the brood from my deceased Camponotus Pennsylvanicus queen murdered by her own daughters? And give the cocoon brood to my new Messor Structor queen? I left them alone for 5 days, and when I checked on them. The queen was decapitated all over the nest 🤷 She was a good queen, she deserved better
Thank you for this answers. About antennae I have a Queen that lost the right flagellum part on an unsuccessful adoption with a major. Does she still use the rest of it for communicate or sense?
I really love your videos, like the way you talk about ants and the good quality of your videos as well, can be a suggestion to make a video trying to do a similar nest like the mini hearth of tar heels, find them expensive and to give us a cheap option to make our own nest. :)
Hi Christian. Tar Heel Ants provides mini hearths at a very respectable price point, and the materials and expertise needed to make complex formicariums takes more time and money than most people anticipate. Feel welcome to see our Petri dish nest tutorial, which may meet your needs. Otherwise, the THA mini hearths often go on sale every few months. If you save your funds, you can get quite a few for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, “cheap” options usually aren’t good options. Thanks for the compliments on our videos. -Miles
@@MilesMaxcer thanks. But i've heard of people having success brood boosting species with the brood of other species of the same genus. I am gonna try it with a few Camponotus cf compressus cocoons with my Camponotus parius and see how it goes.
@@critterchamber While this can work in some specific circumstances, you need to be aware that it increases the risk of brood boosting considerably, and often fails outright.
this channel doesn't have enough subs.... the info you give are so good and well thought out..... it's interesting to hear the info from you because many other channels are not like this... keep up the good work!!!!

Great video as always! Very educational for new/young antkeepers 👍
I actually really enjoy that the ant keeping hobby is so small, it kind of makes it more special to me idk. 💖 🐜
yeah I gotta agree but it would be cool if the ant keeping hobby suddenly became super popular and then you could say that you were an og

Could you explain more detail about gamergate ant.
What is the best way to get Trachymyrmex ants?
Catch queens or dig them up if they're native to your area. By your username, I assume they're not native to your area so you'd have to buy them.

I was asking about the best way to buy them, from where/who

A revelation that ants can be conditioned to light. And like you, I think this is certainly advantageous! Thanks for that information.
so can i actually brood boost a species with brood of another species?
No, in nearly every case you need to be using pupae from the same species.
