Outstanding! Loved your emphasis on the “shapes to sweep”. This will definitely help my game. Thanks!! PS. One video that’s rare to find on UA-cam are TRANSITIONS to BF Guard. It’s a good guard for MMA but my problem is how to get there. The only way I know to get there is to let a guy take me down from standing and NOT give him inside leg control as we’re falling. Do you have any good transitions to BF guard??
I’m glad you talked about how to use it in mma. I love Marcelo Garcia, but a lot of it is great in competition, but not all of it applies to a street fight.
Hey Tom! Love this video! I started playing butterfly guard probably around 8 months ago. Have had solid progress a lot of the other white belts really hate playing vs it in my gym so much so that they defend it like crazy. One thing I am having trouble with is the engagement phase. Often I will start a roll and try to establish some control (only do No-Gi), and I find I struggle especially vs stronger guys as I try hard to control a wrist, or get in and get an underhook etc. What are some of the best ways to engage to close the distance? How do I grab the wrists and make them defend to scoot in? Also, I usually find that I have problems where I am getting my wrists grabbed first and then fighting off the back foot.
hey Coach Tom, I was wondering if you could post a video of a side control attack system. love the videos and if I'm ever in Australia I'll be sure to check out your gym!
What to do when opponent goes for an Ezekiel choke before I can secure good controls for butterfly sweep? I try to elevate my opponent but I end up mounted and choked.
Hey tom how do you get a whizzer or underhook in butterfly when they have tight elbows? or do you set it up with a different grip like 2 on 1 or collar tie?
Any suggestions for getting to the butterfly guard position? No one at my current gym really engages on their knees like that or if i start to try and play butterfly they back out and stand up
@@ThaiPham-go6jc thanks man, i usually play alot of half so I'll try it out. Just to clarify though are you suggesting to transition to full butterfly once i have an underhook? Or just play half- butterfly?
@@Oldhandlewasabitcringe It depends, if you are comfortable to transiton to full butterly you can play it that way or you just focus on butterfly guard professor Tom just showed in the video, I think the most important thing about the transition are the hooks (over/under) and that your back is not flat on bottom, so you are lying on the side (shoulder)
Yo im still new to grappling...so i wanna ask...will sparring bigger heavier guys improve my skills??...because some say its a bad idea because its just going to injure my body
positional sparring will be a good way to improve while limiting injuries will big guys. also with normal size guys by the way. choose a specific technique or position you want to work on, and only work on that, with a big guy you trust. once one of you get out of the aggreed stuff, dont free roll further. stop and restart. slowly let your opponent build resistance so that you both finally can reciprocally work on attack/control & counter.
@@dondawati4345 the trusting part is in this case super important. you should blindly be sure that he will be extremely careful with landing on you when he takes you down. if there's that trust, you should be fine. when in doubt for some takedowns smashing effects, let him do the unbalancing part only.
@@TheGrapplingAcademy thanks for the clarification on that. I see high level guys do it all the time, but if they're secretly favoring a side, that makes sooo much more sense!

Never complicates, always on point.
the handfighting tips were so helpful!
A quick point I've been taught is if they put all their weight backwards just blast double them, and push them backwards
Just be careful of their knees as we never try to push them straight back!
Great video!!
Great video Tom! As a short stumpy guy I've been trying to make butterfly guard my go to low guard and this really helped. Thank you.
Absolutely one of the best breakdowns from attacking from butterfly guard. Very impressive. Oss.
OMG this is gold! So many options. My brain exploded multiple times in this video, especially with that neck snap-down flip-over technique.
I must say the quality of your videography has jumped up significantly by several notches :)
Rock star quality; clear, concise and cool!

Great concepts. I recently got into more no gi and quickly learned that I needed to up my butterfly game... thanks for this great content!

Nice Butterfly series
when playing with the overhook, what do you do to stop him from body locking you? just keep him off balance?
Angle is key but also I don’t fear the body lock just sweep them!

I am from Melbourne, can I this dojo address, please ...
Is the 4:35 technique legal in IBJJF? Would the hand on the neck be considered a can opener?
its legal brah. can opener is illegal because it is a crank, and your opponent has no escape option.

Doesn't Gordon Ryan himself play an ambi-ish butterfly guard though?
