Sloths being adapted for life in the trees weren't really able to grow any larger or heavier, and for whatever reason couldn't or didnt want to change their diet so they had to slow down all the metabolic activity in their body to compensate. There are usually multiple branches that evolution developed down with different solutions to common problems.
