Men like SSgt. Pickett do what is asked of them on behalf of their country Mr. Shepard. It is a selfless gesture, and I'm certain most of these men and women would prefer to be at home with their loved ones. Senseless deaths always result as a consequence of war; However, many lives are also saved, and nations liberated. These men and women are at the mercy of our government... of us.. they are to be respected for their bravery and sacrifices. You want to change the world.. keep voting.

True, I'll give you that, the soldier is a very brave man to let himself be the tool of another. The problem is not really about the soldier himself, but about the man who's handling him, and no, voting won't change squat, cause leaders who fight just wars simply never existed.
By letting himself be the tool of a man ready to throw countless lives away just to satisfy some kind of political plan, the soldier becomes a culprit just as much as his master.

I agree with you on many points, John. However, I disagree that soldiers are the culprits as a result of the ulterior motives of the powers that be. While there are bad apples, most of these soldiers aren't even old enough to psychologically understand and form a well informed opinion. Most dreamed of defending their county on a measure of pride. At one time, and as a tradition, that's what it's was all about. The gesture is in their intentions. They sign up.. then they don't have a choice.

A soldier in uniform is required to stand at attention and salute while the National Anthem is being played. I'm sure SSG Picket is aware of this but I would imagine the emotions of seeing his son for the first time in a long time were overwhelming so he gets a pass. It's not just the soldiers that make sacrifices, it's their families too. As a veteran of the United States army myself, I'd like to say welcome home SSG Picket. Thank you for your service and sacrifice and God bless you and your family.

Hmm...How many children won't see their father, or mother, or siblings as a result of those people spreading their intolerance? When they brought their ideals to our nation, to our doorstep. This is not a push or pull door, it swings both ways. At least this "freedom" and "Democracy" gives many that are not involved in the conflict...the 27 million in Afghanistan, the chance to not live in fear of their "leader".

We can't even know to what magnitude, because they just don't vote... and my goodness don't let it rain on election day! They run a muck in this country on all sides because we let them.
