Egypt, Afghanistan, Iran... The New Water War has begun

  • Egypt is building a new Pharaonic project: the creation of the world's largest artificial river. The aim? To transform 9200 km2 of desert into a new delta, in order to considerably increase its agricultural area. Since 2015, Egypt has already gained 5,000 km2 of arable land from the desert, but this is still not enough to achieve food self-sufficiency. That's why, in March 2021, President Al-Sissi announced the creation of the new delta and the world's largest artificial river, to irrigate over 9,000 km² of new farmland. However, the country is threatened further south by another megaproject, more than 2,000 km away, the Renaissance Dam in Ethiopia. To make this giant project work, the country has to fill a gigantic 74 km3 reservoir by interrupting the course of the Blue Nile. And that's where things get complicated, as the river flows downstream towards Sudan and Egypt. Along with the White Nile, it is one of the Nile's two main tributaries, supplying almost 60% of the Nile's downstream flow. For Egypt, already in desperate need of water, this is a major concern and a terrible threat to its livelihood. Finally, in the second part of this video, we'll look at a project similar to the new delta in Afghanistan, with the construction of an immense 285 km canal. The Qosh Tepa Canal is to be built by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan to divert water from the Amu Darya. Construction is due to start in March 2022. According to the Taliban, the project will convert 550,000 hectares of desert into farmland. The project should boost the country's economic growth and make it agriculturally self-sufficient.

Hello everyone, I would like to point out that the passage of the video on the Afghan canal is only a translation of various scientific articles and elements of television news. In no case do I want to convey any bias in this video and I hope that the canal project will be a success and that it will provide food to the Afghan people.

However I like your video but you were trying to promote conflict and tension between Afghanistan and its neighbours, you didn’t say anything about how much water Afghanistan can have from AMU Daria . Although you use what appears to be a private UA-cam account, I bet you most likely are an agent / hired hand to spin the reality for PR purposes. I can smell the spin from the subtle misrepresentations and the bias of the presentation.
      What are the misrepresentations? Good!
Let’s be objective, if you can handle the truth:
      1) The Blue Nile (Abay), which originates mainly from the highlands of Ethiopia contributes NOT 60% (like you misrepresented), but 85% - 86% of the water to the Nile.
Up until recently, Sudan & Egypt were using a 1929 colonial treaty and a 1955 treaty that was made between the two countries (Egypt & Sudan) to take all of the Nile’s water: 18% for Sudan and the rest for Egypt, none (0%) for all the other 9 countries along the river.
      2) Your presentation made it sound like Ethiopia was the one who did not want to talk. NOT TRUE! Egypt and Sudan were the ones who walked away from the talks protesting the filling of the 3rd phase of the dam filling without a binding treaty.
      3) You presented the construction of the dam as … threat to Egypt.
First of all, the construction of the dam is built mere 35 km before Abay (the Blue Nile) leaves Ethiopian territory. It’s purpose is primarily to generate electricity. Therefore, the cry about water siphoning is disingenuous. If it were drawn away for irrigation purposes, you might sound like genuinely concerned. But the purpose of the dam is primarily for electric generation.
Second, even if Ethiopia wanted to draw water from Abay, it is within its rights to do so. Because, there is no agreement that Ethiopia has signed, which prohibits it from doing so.
Your prejudice is vividly laid out when you play stupid about international law that calls for equitable usage of transboundary rivers. In 2011, all the Nile riparian states had come together to talk about equitable usage of the Nile waters. While a majority of the riparian countries signed a memorandum of understanding in agreement of a resolution to utilize the water equitably, Egypt & Sudan walked away from the session.
      These are the facts.
And yes, Ethiopia has justifiably stated that it will not sign a binding treaty with Egypt & Sudan. Because the right place and circumstance to sign a binding treaty for equitable usage of The Nile is after an agreement has been reached among all the riparian nations. Until then, Ethiopia is within its rights to utilize the Abay waters within its borders.

The reporter is highly hypocritical when it comes to the Afghan project. He jumped into criticising the project without even fully introducing it first and he did not take into account what amount of water from the Amu/Oxus river is entitled to use Afghanistan and the fact that historically Iran and Afghanistan's northern neighbours namely Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and eastern neighbour Pakistan have been enjoying free flow of water (beyond the international norms) for decades due to the wars and instability in Afghanistan. Some of these neighbours have even been actively contributing to the instability in Afghanistan so it cannot build structures like Qosh Tepa and others. Therefore, this report about Afghanistan has been extremely poorly presented and it's not based on independent research.

No country creates a dam or major irrigation canal without a long careful period of studying the effects this will have on that country’s ecology and politics, also the The world has found that huge projects have later effects which show the money spent on those projects to have been a waste. Egypt’s dam has hurt its agriculture by prevent silt deposition and increasing salinity. If you cannot think critically about a project, that project will fail.

My hope is that wiser folks of all sides could put their minds together and come up with solutions that will be beneficial to everyone. Also please consider allowing everyone, even those from other countries to suggest solutions. I truly hope the wiser and cooler heads would prevail. Every country in that region has suffered so much. This is the first time that Afghanistan will use its water rights from the Amu Sea, and this is our absolute right, because more than 30% of the water of the Amu Sea belongs to Afghanistan, maybe you don't know that for more than hundreds of years, countries like of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan have received the most water from the Amu Sea. They have done this, now Afghanistan wants to use its right, and we don't care if someone complains or gets angry, because we only use our right, we don't need anyone's permission!

Ethiopia is building the GERD to generate electricity, not for irrigation. It is not a rocket science to understand that hydro-electric dams do not consume water outside of the initial filling. As you may know also, Ethiopia is conducting this filling only during rainy season where abundant water is available. The same water Egypt dumps to Toshka desert and Mediterranean among others. Why do you think a country located in a high desert who does not even contribute a drop of water to the Nile, building agricultural mega project like this one? Please remember: Ethiopia, just like any country in the world, has a right to use it's natural resources for the betterment of it's citizens.

The cannals instead of having a plain flat surface like a runway, at each intervals of 21 ft there must be small water arresting check dams running throught the length of the canbal so that at each place water percolates at every 21 ft distance area in addition to slowing down the flow of water if the cannal is designed in a st line.
Now a curvy sinosidal wave pattern of cannal can be adopted with provision to rain water to spill off at the crest points so that maximum water infiltration takes place aiding an environment for vegetation growth.

Afghanistan possesses valuable natural resources, including oil ⛽️ and abundant fresh water 💦. Over the years, neighboring countries have benefited from Afghan water resources, while Afghans have paid significant amounts for gas and electricity. During the decades of conflict, some individuals even profited immensely by selling oil, gas, medicines, and food to the poor afghans.
Now, it's a pivotal moment for Afghanistan to harness its fresh water for agricultural development and reclaim arid regions. The country's extensive network of rivers, crisscrossing from north to south and east to west, makes this possible. Afghans are poised to utilize their own water resources, and with proper management, they can regain control over this invaluable asset.

In regards to Afghanistan Amo river There are several agreements with Soviet Russian from 1921 to 1978 on water management, fishing, and sailing. Soviet Union previously didn’t allow afghans to exercise it Amo river rights and putted pressure on previous governments. And in many cases they have violated those agreements with Afghanistan. After USSR collapsed the central Asian republics inherited those agreements, and not making objections to the matter because the violations of the USSR benefited them for decades and they have continued to do so. They continued to build dams and massive water pumps and canals, though those were obviously violations of previous agreements and damaging to the environment especially to water regime and river banks on Afghan’s side, since 1970 the river has washed minimum of 1200 square kilometers of Afghan side bunks. Because Uzbek side has built dams and walls on their side and pushed flow to Afghan side. Now it is wise to the Afghans neighbors to quietly accept the reality and canal otherwise they will loose a lot more.

The damage was done because Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have had their own water canals built long time ago.Amu river partly Originates in Afghanistan. Pumping gas and oil are also natural resources and create problems for the ecosystem. So our beloved ❤️ country has every right to use its own natural resources 100%, like any other sovereign country's.
