  • To save weight you should always ask yourself if a gear is necessary to bring or something you want to bring like for comfort. So do a knife fit into that category? Well, in today’s episode we dive into the question regarding knifes and ask ourself, is a small Victorinox all we need?
    During this episode I also walk about Silnylon Patches from Gear-Aid, not that I am sponsored but because it’s a great product and I do recommend it.

    I use a knife everyday in the normal course of my day, so of course I will bring a knife when I go hiking. If you do not use or need a knife in your everyday life, I don't see why you would suddenly need or use a knife while hiking.

      Yep exactly, bring what you know you will need and like you say…a “sudden need” will probably not magically appear 🤷🏼‍♂️😄

    I keep one on my keychain and it's all I need most of the time for both hiking and every day tasks. Those scissors come in handy! Sometimes if I plan on doing a bit of cooking or want to slice up some bread for a trailside sandwiches, I'll bring a slightly larger "picnic knife," but as you said, I can plan for that.
    As for self-defense, I feel like in most cases my trekking poles would be more useful for fending off an aggressive animal or person. Especially if I can remember any of the moves from my college fencing lessons 😃

    Subscribed. Always carry a Leatherman Surge, the true king of multitools to work. Daily carry a SAK Cybertool 34 because of knife laws.
    You just need to bring the right tool for the job. If you are doing any food prep a victorinox paring knife is pretty light.

      Welcome to the channel Simon 🙂 and yeah, leatherman surge is a great tool! Never heard of the SAK cybertool but will look it up!
      Right tool for the task is absolutely correct…and myself also pair a knife with the small victorinox if necessary…pretty light anyways like you say 👍🏻

    As I just need a little blade to open packages of food, I found the best and lightest option for me is a small Opinel Nr. 7. Sharp blade, lightweight, cheap and safe to use. And no plastic.

    Great video!
    From years -and actually- a Classic Alox SD it's my EDC /all terrain but IMHO for the outdoors a fixed blade or a bigger multitool it's mandatory specially in a case of emergency all of us one of the first abilities we lost it's the sensitive feeling and small movements, in a case of close to hipotermia or stress it's impossible to open an small gadget.
    It's my experience in years of outdoors activities in different environments.
    Thanks a lot

    • @roberthammenrudh
      @roberthammenrudh  8 місяців тому

      Thanks and yeah. If one feel a fixed blade is necessary or mandatory then one should bring one and the reasons your talking about makes sense. But it also depends on if a knife would be the thing that gives you the “needs to survive” and I believe there is where the discussion lies, I believe not in most cases but sure I can also se in some scenarios it might be.
      I bring a knife on some hikes, but mostly not. Mainly for making campfires.
      Thanks for watching and glad you liked this episode. 🙂

      You do not need a knife bigger than a classic SD to start or make a fire.
      No one uses a “big” knife to collect firewood it would take way to long. Lighter, tinder from your pockets or shavings made with SD.

    The Gear Aid products are ALL absolutely excellent. From tenacious tape to genuine Gore Tex and silnylon patches. I've got 2 jackets with Gore Tex patches which have been in place for 10 years (although both are now eventually properly worn out). So imagine that both those jackets would have been thrown away 10 years ago without those patches - and neither has suffered a rip since, so the rips were both just bad luck.

    I have a Classic SD on my main keyring, and it serves most daily uses in my home and office; however, when I am off-road or on trail, I have exclusively carried the Farmer-X for the past three years. Large blade, saw, scissor, awl, can- and bottle openers. It meets every need I have in camp and on trail. The only way it could be better is if they included a tweezer and a ferrocerium stick (instead of a toothpick).

    • @roberthammenrudh

    Really enjoyed this video and also agree with the not having to carry a big knife everywhere idea, my favourite knife is a victorinox midnight manager 58mm knife as it is really lightweight, and contains only tools I am actually going to use for example the knife, file, two screwdrivers a pen, led light and some really good scissors

      Yeah it’s very handy indeed mostly the only one I carry as I live in a town, I do have quite a collection of other knives and tools like leathernan and Gerber etc which I thought I would use, I’ve bought some really expensive knives and tools however I always end up going back to either the victorinox midnite manager or the classic sd 👌

    The safety purpose of a fixed blade knife is for (in my opinion) for splitting wood for a camp fire or emergency fire. Especially in places where fire wood is provided, it'll be fairly useless unless someone also left kindling behind, or you have a knife to split it down. A decent 4 inch blade fixed blade knife is often only around 100g, which is the same weight as a medium sized swiss army knife. The SAK might be very useful for many things, but it's almost useless for splitting kindling for a fire. Not many people realise that a medium SAK and medium fixed blade are pretty much the same weight.

    I usually carry a knife on hikes but never use one. I also carry nail clippers and tweezers on my belt at all times. Those are handy all the time.

    • @roberthammenrudh
      @roberthammenrudh  Рік тому +1

      That’s my experience as well… many people just thorough in a knife or put it on the belt as an old habit or thought of how it should be when out hiking… but scissors and tweezers, can’t live without them 😄👍🏻

    I personally would bring a knife with me but I do own a victorinox classic and I carry one of those almost every day I'm surprised at how many EDC tasks it could perform if you just do a little bit of thinking outside the box you could use the tornox classic in so many different ways obviously it's not going to chop down a tree but if you're doing it through hike it's good to have some kind of cutting implement just in case you have to cut rope or you have to cut open a package or something

    I've carried the same Leatherman Style PS as you for years - at 47g it does so many things but it's the proper pliers that I find the most useful. Of course it doesn't have a blade, but I prefer to carry a separate blade. My choice? Opinel #6 Inox with Walnut handle. 25g versus the Victorinox's 22g but it's a serious working (and safety locking) blade. Makes short work of any fish I catch, raises a good spark from its backspine too! Given you have duplicated the scissors and tweezers on your Leatherman Style PS, wouldn't it make sense to carry a more capable blade at only 3g difference?
    Thanks for the tip about the Silnylon repair patches, I'd been looking for something like that.
    By the way your Wildo Fold-a-Cup is the child sized version - grow up and get the adult (600ml/45g) one, for a man-sized coffee! (it also works better as a night-time pee receptacle)

      Hi David 👋🏻 and totally agree 😄 most of the time I have to make 2 cups!!
      Well yea, it makes sense…if I want to have a blade with me I actually do bring a slightly bigger one, the Böker plus Fr Cf at 57 grams. Small but capable folding nice with a 7.2cm blade. Good enough for most situations, then I bring the Style ps mostly for the plier but also the scissors.
      BUT my ps recently broke, the pliers…so need to get myself a new one!!

    It may just be me, but I don’t find the Victorinox sharp enough - especially not the accesories, such as the scissors. So what I use instead is the Opinel no 7 inox - that thing is sharp like a scalpel and easily eliminates my need for scissors for fine cuts, while still being fairly light (at around 30grams). I can even do some very basic carving, although it is really too sharp for that. Since the handle is made of wood, it will float if dropped in water, I dropped a Victorinox in a lake when I was a kid and never saw it again. In addition to the Opinel I carry separate mini tweezers, mainly for the occasional tick :6

    • @roberthammenrudh
      @roberthammenrudh  2 роки тому

      I do agree somewhat because my scissors on my Leatherman is sharper. But for the tasks I use it for the Victorinox is sufficient. I have looked at Optinel but since I have a small Böker that works just fine if I need a knife I haven’t coming around buying one, yet. We will see…maybe in the future 🙂 thanks for sharing!

      @Shep Raynham been there. Lyme disease can be really painful, mine developed into arthritis - I almost couldn’t walk. Fortunately for me, I was more or less certain that it was Lyme and persuaded the doctor (she thought it was gout) and was given antibiotics. After two days the symptoms were gone, but I still went the full treatment. I am pretty sure I caught the tick when bivvy camping (the only time that I had an adult tick in years). They crawl onto you when you’re walking, and you don’t have the same options to check for them in a confined space such as a bivvy.

    • @R0381N
      @R0381N 2 роки тому

      @Shep Raynham Yeah, you kinda need to know what you’re doing when removing ticks, regardless of what tool you use. Those tick loops are nice but cannot remove the larvae (luckily they can’t transmit Lyme).
      But if I would give any advice in this subject, it would be to constantly check yourself. The tick I believe caused my Lyme infection was easily removed (since it was an adult) and had all of its mouthparts intact, but it was not discovered for some time since I was wrapped up in the bivvy all night.

      Ditto - but the Opinel 6 Inox with Walnut handle (doesn't swell like the beechwood when wet) at 25g. If I'm anticipating the need for something even beefier I'll take the same knife in the 9 size (still only 48g).

    I pack a Leatherman Supertool. It's overkill, but it's what I have so it's what I take, but I almost never need it. One time I decided I was going to leave it and as soon as I pitched my tent the stake loop that holds the vestibule out came unstitched and let to go of the tensioner. If I'd have had my Leatherman I could've repaired it in minutes with the awl and a paracord strand, but nope. Instead it took me 20 - 30 minutes of trying to puncture the strap with a spork and get the hole to stay open enough to feed a piece of string in there and tie it back together. NEVER AGAIN will I leave it at home. The awl is also an incredible ferro rod striker. Practically turns it into a flamethrower.

    I plan for the day. If I am going to be hiking more than a few miles I try and lighten my pack and bring a small victorinox and maybe a leatherman tool. If I am going to be outdoors and want to practice bushcrafting I will bring a different bag and heavier tools. Day to day I carry a leatherman tool with a pocket clip.

    I like to bring my Victorinox Fieldmaster or the Spartan. It has what I may need and offers a good grip for my hands.
    I have the skills to defend myself with a knife. Still, I do not bring one for that purpose. Skedaddle would be the preferred option. If that can´t be done, my walking stick offers a reach advantage and less legal repercussions in the aftermath. When enjoying the outdoors, I did not have a selfdefense situation so far. The point may be moot anyway.

    I use and carry a fixed blade wherever I go, usually a Morakniv basic 511 or a Morakniv Companion. The advantages of a fixed blade knive is that there is no folding mechanism or lock to fail. It is a sheath knife and therefore on my belt, so very quickly accessible. I always have it in my sheath if I'm not actively using the knife, so I never lose the knife.

    In my country carrying fixed blade or locking mechanism not legal. Also blade length also effects so I choose victorinox classic SD becomes handy for small survival tin. Of course you can't do bushcraft work. In survival situation it's best cutting tool for preparing food skinning tasks and fishing. Safety purposes you can break a branch 2inch diameter by 2 meters length use as trekking poles and for safety

    • @roberthammenrudh

      Yea we have the same regulations in Sweden so I usually don’t carry a knife. It is allowed though if it’s in an environment you need it such as fishing or you need it for work. So for me as well the Victorinox is perfect for that reason and often all you need 👍🏻

    I've been thinking dropping knife from my hiking set. Last time i was 10 days in wilderness and used knife once to open food package, because i had wet hands and no grip. Although not sure if little Victorinox is good enough for whittling wood. Knife for defense is pretty much useless, if you are not prepared and even then it's just luck if you are fast enough. I had little bit of knife fight training years ago and two real life situations involving knife (luckily no-one was hurt), but i would rather try to speak, run or get branch from tree. Where i live only animals i see as threat is unleashed dogs, other animals usually are afraid of people even if they could be dangerous. Against any animal trekking poles would be weapong of choice anyway. Stabbing something like bear or moose is ridiculous idea.

      Totally agree with you and great that no one got injured during your fight… run rather than stand and fight is my Nr one 😄! Or like you say, trekking poles or a branch!
      The victorinox is a bit small yes, if I want to make/start a fire and make feather sticks and such during a hike I usually pick one or two sizes larger knife for that trip.

    I was expecting more angry comments from people who use their EDC everyday. I use my phone every day. Although, I admit I'm not very handy nor helpful. I also use pens to sign at restaurants and work. Next would be my keys. I'm also sensitive and weak so I don't like it when I am carrying more than usual.
