When working in Australia back in the 80's, there was an older gentleman that was selling bunches of these kits at the Australian nationals. A real cross-section of flyers (FF, RC, CL, etc.) built one to fly at a local gym after the day's main events. It was an extremely popular and relaxing event! I was happy to max out a few times even though I had little indoor FF experience. Amazing how a little care in construction can improve your flights!
Many years ago I recall these were made of light weight balsa wood and light mylar, the rubber motor was available at hobby stores, so you would make own motor. One thing i learned just talking to these hobbyist who built them was that the propeller was also key in making the flight so slow. It was amazing just to watch and see how long the flights could last.
Thanks for the video - Hangar Rats are deliriously good fun - cheap to build, easy to trim,, delightful indoors and out ! Thank goodness for *Outerzone* hosting the plans for free.
When I was a child, Brian Wattie showed me how to make this airplane. My friend Bruce Sandborn (deceased) and I made them. We had a little contest, mine flew 56 seconds. I may have been about 10-12 years old. Amazing experience. I was hooked for life. I eventually designed my own rubber powered plane called the Squirrel.
Majestic. I've done RC glow, sailplanes, and electric micro. All rewarding but nothing compares to building your own rubber band plane and that moment you pass the one minute mark in flight.
Well, well, well! None of us kids learned how to wind an rubber band like that when we were young. Great flight and great video, thanks for sharing. Oh, came back to sub and give a high five.
Congratulations, this is the movie about the rat hangar most beautiful ever seen. clearly shows the operation of the model and its flight, soft and majestic. I was really amazed with the flight. this movie encouraged me to build a hangar rat to me. I just wonder if I can use as a winder electric Instead of a manual Thanks - Jerri Aderson - Brazil
A very good all round RC is the Trophy Truggy Flux. It's not the fastest but it's fast enough and has good traction and can run on many different types of terrain. If you want something more for bashing then look at the Thunder Tiger MT4 G3 which is great value for money, if you can find one. I just got the Apache C1 Flux and really like it too, great scale looks. It's probably not going to be a great basher but still a lot of fun.
What kind of rubber band is that. Its very soft or hard rubber. Wondering because it flies quite long. Tried to make something like that and used simple rubber band. I ended with rubber band untwisting like in 5 seconds.
Beautiful!!. I tried to build the Comet rubber powered kits of the 1940s and never got more han 10 seconds flt time. You have me beat by miles. I love to fly the old timers. They float so nice,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Peter Berard
If you look closely at the the vertical stabilizer you will notice a "rudder" which is fixed to turn the plane gently to the right. Thanks for watching!
I have build 80 present copy like that hanger rat , but I didn't find the rubber band😩 but still trying with small combine rubber band . thanks for the design close up 😇
Esta buenisimo tratare de hacer para mis hijos y salir a jugar toda una tarde saludos de chile buen invento y exelente video .dedito para arriva todo el rato 👍😁👍👍👍👍
Happy that you enjoyed it Jerri! I have seen people use electric winders but for some of the serious guys winding by hand is the preferred method. Thanks for watching!
Just wonderful. You know what grieves me tho.....look at the guys in that gym. ALL old retired guys like me. NO young guys. I fear, when we're gone...this is gone. No screen to stare at. No button called "re-set" if you crash. Gone.
Is it absolutely necessary to use the special rubber? I use normal rubber bands strung together, but can only get flight times of a few seconds or so :(
Hi GiantmanSystems, I have a question. I am thinking about buying an hpi rc car. Butbi dont know which one to choose. Im looking for an fast electropowered car. Doesnt matter if its a truck, truggy or buggy. Sorry for bad english. Im from Holland.

WOW, unreal flight time, controlled flight, 'round an 'round, climbing, descending then a proper landing, amazing.

Very nice build and flight. I wonder if he has experimented with other propeller pitch angles and diameters. I must look for plans on the web.
so nyc....and amazing...whats its hole weight and how many truns given to rubber,
What materials did you use for the wing specifically ? I'm building a rubber-band propeller airplane for a project.
Perfect trimming, perfect flight !
