Sassafras Tower, Foothills Trail Re-opening

- In this video our awesome FHT volunteers converge on Sassafras Mt. the highest point in SC and the Foothills Trail. We divide into five individual work teams:
Jerry Harvey lead the trail bed repair team and they dug out the trail bed along the summit and down the back side. They vastly improved the eroded area and installed several water bars and turnouts.
Pete Woody lead the sign team. They removed all the detour signs and temporary posts with blazes along the road. They also installed a hiker sign with arrow at the road crossing. Afterward they helped the trail bed team on the summit.
Willa Gleason lead the blazing team. They repainted blazes from the Cantrell homesite, up and over the summit of Sassafras, down back side and across the road to the large boulder.
Phil Hollinger lead the trail clearing team. They cleared the trail, steps, and water turnouts from the summit down to the road crossing. Afterward they assisted the trail bed team.
Dave Howle led the sign install team on the summit. They re-installed the FHT directional sign that was removed for the construction. They also installed 2 posts with blazes.
We were able to perform 10 hours worth of work in about 2 hours! The trail is now open over the summit and the Sassafras tower opens on April 22nd!
Hey man, I'm the thru hiker you met between Sassafras and the Cantrell homesite Saturday. Thanks again for the campsite recommendation. Lighthouse was awesome. Plenty of firewood and it was so cool to camp right amongst all those rocks. I finished up Sunday morning and just applied for my Peregrine Award. Thanks for all the hard work you guys are doing!
It was so great to actually meet a backpacker on the trail who knew me from a video! I'm glad you had a great hike and i will tell Heyward Douglass to watch out for your Peregrine Award. I appreciate all the volunteers who help maintain the Foothills Trail. The Sassafras observation tower is finally going to be an impressive stop on the trail. Before it was just “meh”.
