I am a Malaysian who are fluent in Mandarin and English. I lived in UK for 20 years. I have been to CHN, US, CAN, AUS and EU. I notice a huge difference in how the people in the west and east treat each other. In general Caucasian hold a very negative and sometime hostile attitude towards the Asian esp. Chinese, whereas Asian are kind and friendly to Caucasian. I also notice the mainstream media from western nations always report "unverified" news about China but not the other way round. Anyway, I left UK 3 years ago. China is emerging as a superpower, plenty of opportunity available there. I just hope my kids can pick up Chinese and pursue career in China while they still have chance. Good luck to those who never wants to leave UK.

how do you generalise white people being "hostile" and not give examples of them "very negative"? I dont see any linching of chinese or chinese being "re.educated" in camps. as for the media. . . you know full well that the mainland does not allow access to "sensitive" parts of china whilst the west is open to mainland media companies for news coverage.

I will never forget my first day in China walking into Hongqiao station. It was huge and crowded and confusing. Now it is routine and the trains are so cool. The Shanghai subway at rush hour is an adventure though.
Wechat is the best social media platform out there. Totally integrated and super easy.
The food in China is way better than England and certainly more affordable. There were enough western places to not get too homesick but they are expensive. The Chinese food is diverse, tasty and really interesting. The wines are getting pretty good too, but the baijo is horrible.
Medical care is weird but very good in China. It is crowded and crazy in the outpatient and admitting areas but once you are admitted to a hospital it is first rate and very affordable. They saved my life, so thanks!

@@Nicofilms Thanks:) A couple of things sprung to my mind: 1. work-life balance: which is basially non-existance in China (at least in 1st and 2nd tier cities), many jobs require 24-7 standby, whereas most people do have more time with their family in the UK and you can switch your phone off after work (because your boss does this too). 2. Efficiency: China is so much better - on the personal level. We Chinese get things done fast, we don't like to wait and we are very flexible. UK on the other hand, is much slower, and delays are normal. But because of (arguably) better planning and (most) people sticking to rules, on the system level, UK is actually quite efficient and thus, back to topic 1, people have more time for themselves.

I'd argue that you can get good multi-cultural foods throughout most chinese cities from T2/3 and above, depending on what province you are in. Shandong's (specifically Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai) colonial past means you can get some pretty high quality western foods. Same goes with most of Guangdong province, where even in smaller cities like Zhongshan you can enjoy things such as Indian food.
These things might be a bit harder to find in say Sichuan, Fujian (excluding Xiamen), Hunan etc but I feel this has been changing in the past decade as more expats decide to settle in these spots.

I definitely think it has improved even in the short time I have lived here but even in the very small towns in the UK we have restaurants for different cuisines. I think in smaller cities there might be only a handle of places for millions of people. If you compare the city centre of Beijing and the city centre of London, the vast majority of people are living in flats in both cities. The difference appears when you go to the outskirt of the city, you see more houses in London than in Beijing. Nevertheless, if you go even further out from Beijing, to the surrounding countryside, then again, most people are living in houses. So I think the difference lies in the boundary in between the city centre and the countryside.
It is quite common in the UK for people to commute to work from satellite towns and villages to the city. This is now also possible for people in the second tier cities in China as they are not that big so the time spent is reasonable. Still, most people in China now still prefer to live in the city for more convenience. It may change in the future when the infrastructure is more developed in the neighborhood countryside.

The UK maybe multicultural. But trying to be inclusive in that multilateral way is not a thing the UK is good at. Currently the ethnic hatred for minorities & women is not inclusive or progressive. Which the UK has never been, but at least there was a more "tolerable" atmosphere. Which was not so visibly on displace. From every objective reports on China I'm getting the impression China is working hard to be inclusive and not just tolerant.

Most people didn't dare venture out their hometown, needless to say moving to a country with different food, culture, lifestyle, and language. I was in shock seeing so many people when first visiting that country. Some of their behavior was totally unacceptable to us, more like uncivilized. Especially, the lack of courtesy and politeness were things that bothering me. After talking to my elder sister, she said due to culture revolution from 60-80, mainland China lost so much traditional Chinese culture. But things are starting to improve, younger generation was waiting in line as I noticed in metro stations in Shanghai/Guangzhou/Shenzhen. That was rarity to be seen in China, LOL.. I believe China will getting better given her time. After all, she has 1.4 billion people vs 300 million in States. Plus, we are not so much better than them at this moment due to anti-Asia/Black/ and other issues. In short, kudos to you and other expats that have the courage to stay/thrive/ contributing and happily living in China. Keep up the great works and spreading the positive tone about China. She needs you all the most at this time due to negativity reports from Western media, peace out!

China is an interesting place for sure. Beautiful country, rich culture, and a history and traditions that are certainly older than most. It's too bad the ruling government of the country is rather restrictive in some ways (social credit system, limited rights of speech and property, and the genocide of Uighur muslims). I hope that things change. Also, I enjoyed how you framed the mass surveillance and limiting of access to the internet as "it's just so convenient". Had a chuckle at that.
