for those who don't understand and are commenting on the exaggerated contrast, he's teaching how to draw, as opposed to painting a commissioned portrait, so the features and contrast are more pronounced to convey his lesson, he's an absolute master of anatomy and we're very lucky he's sharing his knowledge, be respectfull
Wow, this.. This is what I need. I had almost given up on "how to draw"-videos, because they're usually very basic and never tell you anything besides "do the basic stucture, add the rest, shadows", no matter how good the artist is. I began thinking drawing from reference was the only way to get anywhere, but you showed me (us) what the actual drawing process is with shadow mapping. For that, you have my sincere gratefulness. Also, it's really satisfying to watch you draw.
because halftones are subtle and hard to judge when there are no other values established. I find that separating the major families (shadow and light) first, helps to judge the subtleties of the halftones.
Great constructive criticism! thank you. I think you're right, even though I have a separate video about the ear structure, I should tie them together more in the step by step videos. Next time I'll reiterate some of the most important points about structure while showing how to do it..
I love how respectful and considerate he is answering comments. Even the ones that could be considered rude, he takes the time to give a thoughtful and kind reply.
I've been drawing for a few years now but I never really felt the need to learn about the structures of different features and the anatomy. I now realize how naive I was. within 3 days of watching your videos, (head and facial features) I'm now able to draw portraits and my own face too (with good accuracy I'd say). I'll be binging ALL your videos for the next two three four five six seven months. hopefully I can become a good artist. thank you for your lovely videos.
I have been practicing drawing noses ears lips and eyes. I have to get more practice before I start drawing portraiture again. thanks so much for your expertise! it's been so helpful!
Your tutorials are awesome! They really helped me out. I just wish you'd discuss the different angles a little bit more. In the beginning of the video we can see some other angles, but you do not discuss them. I've been drawing some faces lately, based on your vids and I always get a mixture of male looking features and female looking features. So if you could do some kind of video where you discuss all the features again but now how to make them male or female, that would be really helpfull :)
You hold the pencil like a magic wand. I notice by using the sides of the lead instead of the point you can get softer shapes and better gradation between values.
I just can't identify that many values when drawing faces, and that's why my drawings always look a little flat on some areas, especially cheeks and forehead, except when the contrast is very high. Somehow it seems to me that there is some exaggeration that simply dont exist in the original, just to make the drawing look alive, but that requires study besides observation. Is that right?
You can learn to add more contrast and identity values by eye better by printing out a reference photo and outlining each of the major sections where two values look different. Then you can exaggerate these areas in your Portrait by making the shadows darker and the highlights brighter.
proko, you're a genius, your videos and your style are the best on youtube...I have a question, what are your thoughts on using a tablet like a galaxy note pro to practice your drawing skills? would that translate well to paper? I know paper and and pencil/charcoal is the best but as a substitute when you don't have your art materials around
You are really amazing☺☺☺😇...I have seen all of ur playlist video...enjoying this...You are so funny also...i am a student of BSCS😛....love from Pakistan😇
I love the way you beak down things on your videos, it makes it so easy to follow up! By the way, may i suggest a video about lightsource and super-imposing forms? the video with the egg example was very good, but i think it doesnt make vey clear how light would work on things like fingers facing the lightsource, or like the center of the ear you drew here.I want to know how does light work when things seem to be the same value and how to differentiate them without using a line :/
I had never heard the term "occlusion shadow" before this video. After looking into it I had run into some other things. Have you ever considered doing some videos addressing global illumination and caustics?
I have a bit of a problem. I can't actually see the core shadows in the reference picture. In fact, the bottom of the ear lobe looks the darkest to me. Are they something +Proko added after years of experience, or are my eyes not trained enough? Because the core shadows don't seem to correspond to the reference picture at all... Edit: after watching the the video on shading, is this what he calls "cheating in" a core shadow for better readability?
Dear Proko ! Can I send u a sketch of mine .. I tried your shading but it didn't work ! I just couldn't find the CORE shadow separating light n shadow .. it just didn't work . I sketch from photos .. Would you indicate to me where the core shadow is so that I know where to start ! ( I also didn't find the light direction ) ?????? I used the other tutorial about shading ....
My art teacher says you should never, EVER, wipe out shading with your hand, because it looks blurry. You should always use hatching (I think that's the correct word. English isn't my mother tongue).
Find something and take it under the light source, u will notice that there's one shadow shape and if u look close to it, u will notice there's two values even though there's only one shadow shape and the dark ones is closer to the object, For example if u use a ball then the shadow shape will be a circle, and three quarter of the circle which closer to the object will be darker than the rest
+faten SALMAN "[I use a] Conte 1710 B or 2B. But, I also like to use the primo 59B and wolff's carbon 6B..." You can also look at this site: www.proko.com/drawing-supplies-i-use-in-my-videos/ I know it's been ages since you asked, but hopefully this will at least help someone else who's wondering.
You have great tutorials, but I wish that you had a video on just shadow mapping with arrows, or you with a pointer. This goes too fast. I know that I can pause it and go back, but with a pencil on one hand and the eraser in the other, constantly stopping and going back sucks.
why does he make it look so simple because hes so good, From personal experience it takes 50 tries before i even begin to get it, then practice practice practice, once you’ve painted something or drawn it 3 to four hundred times its hard wired in to your memory.
Hi Proko! I tried out your tutorial and I'm really happy with how it came out! This is what I ended up with! i.redd.it/p1jynqzcfss11.jpg I had no idea I was able to do this! Thanks a lot!

I'm in San Diego, 3am here. So much to do!

Thanks Proko :D Now I have a brief, good overview of the parts of the face. Your drawing skills are awesome. Thumbs up!
"the darkest light is lighter than the lightest dark" sounds like something from a hollywood movie
I have been practicing drawing noses ears lips and eyes. I have to get more practice before I start drawing portraiture again. thanks so much for your expertise! it's been so helpful!
Your drawing is amazing ,it seams to be real , you are genius .
after trying to draw along with the video I have a totally new understanding of Van Gogh! :P Great video! Love your work!
It's 6am here on the east coast! But your updates are far more important than sleep!!!

Great tutorial Stan..!! Had never been able to draw an ear that looked like on and after this video drew it quiet good 😂
I'm really really thankful for the existence of this channel..

OMG Proko! You are a drawing genius. How did you get there? Please enlighten this mere mortal.

Hi ProkoTV ^^
I wanna thank you for all your tutorials, they are really helpful
I love this channel
Aw, thanks! 😊

TT i thought ears are the easiest facial features... but now i know they are one of the complex ones. I really need to master them more.

what kind of pencil you used?
Amazing proko
I had never heard the term "occlusion shadow" before this video. After looking into it I had run into some other things. Have you ever considered doing some videos addressing global illumination and caustics?
again a very good video.... Did you draw this out of your head or used a reference photo? Greetings from vienna
The anti helix and the shading make it look like there’s a crow in his ear.
thats so relaxing to watch...
Which Pencil Do You Using ? And how To cut This pencil ? Can you Upload a small new Video Using materials and details ? :) Thanks o.O
Awesome☺️👍👍
Hello, can shadow mapping be applied while drawing other parts of the face, such as the nose, lips etc,?
Question what reference books would be useful for drawing practice learning that you would recommend?
Raymond St Paul Andrew loomis head and hands.. there s lots more books related to Andrew loomis.. proko also uses Loomi method, sir.
Wow, ears are so underrated.
I have a bit of a problem. I can't actually see the core shadows in the reference picture. In fact, the bottom of the ear lobe looks the darkest to me. If you're practicing your drawing and you ever get discouraged, just remember: it's always the darkest light before the lightest dawn.

@sam28810 If your art teacher says you should "Never EVER" do something...he/ she's not a very good art teacher.
unless he's talking about bringing darks into your lights because that really should NEVER happen
i like!
