- Here is a quick video on how to replace an IAC or Idle Air Control Valve, whether you are experiencing a low idle speed or your engine is simply running rough a bad IAC valve could be your problem. This valves brake down over time but also get clogged due to carbon build up and will not work properly as a result. But regardless of whether you need to replace them or simply clean them you'll need to take them out and here is exactly how you can locate and remove them.

I'm beginning to get the feeling ("there's no need to drain the coolant "-)
That was my exact first thought, or just clamp off the hoses is what I’ll try
@@austinwayda94did clamping the hoses do the trick?
Fantastic video! Short, easy and to the point.
You know coolant runs through this iacv, so make sure your radiator is not rusty and clogging iacv with rust fragments. A way to check for rust is to remove coolant reservoir and tilt as you look inside the bottom. If you see dirt or rust, replace radiator as you clean and replace iacv gasket with oem one (very cheap). Bleed radiator of any air. IF that doesn't fix idle problems, then replace iacv valve.
no need to drain the coolant!
This fixed my idle problem thank you ! Did not need to drain coolant
Was the idle going l and down, did you replace or clean
Me either but it was a pain getting it off annnddd.. I forgot to plug it back in smh lol
@@sexdrugsrocknroll420 I replaced that part and it keeps doing the same thing the idle goes up and down and sometimes the car turns off on me is there something else that I could check or replace that cause that problem!??
@@luisurrutia7344 if you're still having a problem with surging idle then here's a recommendation you really won't find anywhere. The two screws that hold the electronic sensor to the IAC valve, sometimes they allow air to pass through where they are seated. Get yourself some gasket maker and apply to the heads of the screws. This fixed my surging idle. Be sure to burp the car if you replaced coolant also as this can cause hunting idle problems.
Really not need to drain coolant?! Thanks look like to easy for me to fix my wife's car.
Before buying a part that cost almost $200.00 you might wanna run a test , get some wires and connect to a battery see if valve open n closes.
Good tutorial. I have a 93 integra and I'm replacing the IACV and it's a real pain. While you have just enough space to get in there, the Integra has a number of lines that run across the throttle body preventing you from getting your hand in there. I guess I'll just have to remove them. BTW: Why did you have to drain the coolant??
Please help me DIY Auto Repair. I've got a 1999 Civic that is starting to drive me nuts... A few weeks ago it wouldn't start, so I had it towed to a shop and two days later it was ready... The guy from the shop told me that it had been the distributor (some parts were out of place...) and that no parts were necessary, just some re-adjusting... When I got a chance to open the hood, I found out that the throttle cable had been tightened somewhat... I noticed right away that the car was idling a little lower than usual, but since it drove fine, I didn't make a big a big fuss about it... Anyway, it would always start with a low rpm, but it would go back to normal shortly after, when I would coast or stop. However, a few days later, when I went for a drive and sped quite a bit on an open road, the car's idle has changed significantly... It idles at around 1500 rpm when coasting until I come to a full stop, after which the idle drops to 1200 rpm... On cold starts, it revs up to 2000 rpm, but gradually drops down to 1200 rpm, so I guess the IACV is ok...
I've checked the spark plugs which have about 12000 kms on them and look almost new,
I've tried readjusting the throttle cable, but to no avail,
cleaned the throttle body,
searched for any hose with damage, trying to find a vacuum leak with water,
I also tried troubleshooting as in the shop manual, where you cover the lower port of the throttle body, where it states if you cover it and there is no change in the idle, then you have a vacuum leak and there is no change to the idle when I cover it...
However, if I cover the air inlet tube to the air filter, it makes what seems to be a suction noise...
When I have the air inlet removed and stop the engine, a strange noise comes from the throttle body, like two or three hisses...
Does this mean I have a vacuum leak?
Sorry for the long post... Thanks in advance.
Thank you DIY Auto Repair Videos for sharing and sending this Tutorial video godbless you 🙏🙏
The IACV sensor of my B16 Was dirty af, so i cleaned it the same way but with brake cleaner. Now its working. At first it had a problem with the rpm.
Tq for uploading this video...it helps me alot
This worked for me, fixed my weak idle at cold start 🎉
oh okay. so the lines go directly to the engine from the idle air control valve? and its okay, I really appreciate this help
So cleaning is just the screen. Let dry and not remove coolant lines? Then reattach? That gasket will probably need to be replaced?
Can I use throttle body cleaner instead of carb cleaner?
Thank you kind sir, it helped tremendously. Just took her in for smog, hopefully she passes.
@GuateMalan King yeah but sadly she was burning oil and loosing coolant. I already spent more in repair than I did on her. sold her for 500 RIP 1990 Acura Lx
Great video man. Very helpful.
My iacv nipples are pointing up did i put it back wards ? Would it still work? Or is it bc i have a skunk 2 intake manifold
o.k., so what is draining the coolant have to do with the replacing and or removing the valve. $33.00 plus at quick stop auto parts.
What year Honda is this for? Maybe it says somewhere but I don't see it. also...no engine info
Thanks for helpimg me.
I don't think you have to drain the coolant. I would put a pan or some shop rags under where you working. Some might leak out. Also, if you are going to clean it. It's a good idea to remove the gasket before you spray chemicals on it
can you re use the same gasket?

My 90 Accord has the surging problem but only from a cold start and only lasts 2 mins then back to approx 700-800 RPM, is this like your problem or was it always surging regardless of engine temp (meaning would happen not just at cold start)?

Only if you have to pull the lines off in order to remove it.
I have a 2000 lx won’t start reading iac codes if i replace this should it start?
I have honda accord 94 model manual transmission. My problem in my car occurred while having a long travel, the engine lost power and stalled. The other problem is when the car running at
60KPH or more with 3000RPM when I applied brake while in neutral gear, the RPM down until engine stop running. What shall I do, pls help me....
Did you find out the problem?
Where is that tool found? Not that it will make or break doing this job, but it does come in handy. Anyone know, please?
how close is that engine and IAC placement compared to a 2002 4 cyl accord?
exact same
Thank you couldn not figure out the name of it off the parts store as my hose attachments were rusted though and broke when I removed them
Fancy ratchet!!! That's a cool one!!!
Don’t you have to adjust the idle ? I just put a new ICV on my prelude but when I put it on I’m the car starts idling at 3500 rpm

Did you clean or replace ?
The idle was going up and down I assume??

Curse the Honda design engineers.
The iac valve on my 1990 civic hatch just went bad yesterday. Dont think I'm gonna try and clean it due to it probably never being changed. But do you need to replace any gaskets?
yeah for sure those gaskets can create a vaccume leak if you dont replace them, super cheap too
Thanks man.
You can't just run down to the Parts store and get an EACV for a Honda. These vehicles Do Not operate Well using Aftermarket idle valves. Get the Factory part which is made by Denso. You'll be Glad ya did.
Is releasing the water from radiator a must?
No you dont have to do drain ir release from radiator. Just clean the idle air control valve and it should fix the problem.
Thanks man
Can you show where the coolant lines go?
Just replaced the head on my 96 accord, f22b2. Started it up and the idle jumped up to 4k rpm. And just stays there. Would this be the problem?
44boman probably hella late but just in case anyone has the same issue. Replace the thermostat n you should be good.
Or it could be a clogged/failured FITV (fast idle thermo valve) if your accord is '98 and older. It controls idle until the engine warms up.
I'm trying to find out how I test the Ideal Speed Control. or should I just try cleaning the IAC. The engine shuts of when put in neutral but other than that runs fine.
Julia did it fix your problem? Mine shut off on me at a few red lights while in neutral on my home from work, its been idling poorly lately and it struggles to take off in 1st

2:40 I've spent 3 hours trying to get the hose clamps off now, they are positioned facing the back, and I've even bought a special hose clamp tool to try and get them off... But it is still proving insanely difficult. Any tips?
Yes. Take both bolts off. Then take the electrical connector off first. This will give you better access to the driver side hose. Then get needle nose pliers and spin the hose clamps around so you can get a better bite on the clamp. Pinch the driver side clamp with the needle nose pliers and slide it down the hose past the hose barb. Grip the hose at the hose barb and work it down off the barb. Then do the same for the passenger side hose.
what coolant is he talking about?
Do u need to bleed the new iac.
01 accord idle fluctuates and sometimes stalls when braking and coming to a complete stop. I replaced brake booster after testing it by removing vac line and plugging. Problem still exists. When car is parked while applying brakes idle wil jump to about 1300 then drop to 600 or lower after 2sec. any ideas? IAC maybe? i was also thinking Master Cylinder possibly not functioning properly on booster side. Also i have no problems at the brake pedal.
Did you fix it? If so, what was the problem? I'm having stalling at idle with my 94 Accord (?F22B2? if I remember :)
Just replaced mine. And it still surges when it warms up!
When I unplug it while it's running the car runs perfect...
So this one is bad too... ugh! It's Brand New!
Thanks. Edit.. Whats that ratchet called?
It's called a Flex Head Ratcheting Wrench. $25/set at Harbor Freight.
Can you use brake parts cleaner?
Yes
When I replaced this part the idle got worse ?
What's the torque of those two bolts?
Do you have to drain your coolant before installing your new valve?

where does the hoses go to, i bought the idle regulator but the previous owner remove it from the car. and i dont know where do i plug the hoses
steven castro I am having the same issue. did you find out where they go to?
Henry Garcia yes, in my car, the removed the heater, i only had to plug the hoses where the heater hoses where.
so you're not running the coolant lines to the idle air control valve?
Henry Garcia yes im using the coolant, the engine has 1/2 hose conection in the side, and the coolant return pipe from the car has anothe 1/2 hose conection at theside with a 3/8 hose conectio. in my car the 2 1/2 conections had a hose in between so i cut this hose and aded a T conection, that had 2 1/2 conection and 1 3/8 conection. and the i pluged a short 3/8 hose to the return pipe in the engine. and the other one to the 3/8 conection in the T plug.
its hard to explain expecially since i dont have that mush knolege on car part names
LOL!! DO NOT DRAIN THE COOLANT!!! Simply put a plastic clamp on the two hoses, remove the connector, the two bolts and replace if needed.
Exactly! Get yourself two 4" Irwin Vise-Grips, attach some 1/2 inch rubber tubing on the ends of the vice-grips, and then clamp the coolant lines. No need to drain the radiator...unless you want to change the radiator fluid.
What year is this car? This is nothing like what I'm working on.
I'm guessing you have the triple port one with the gate that flops back and forth inside that blocks either side depending on position. That's what I was expecting..
it's $50 on eBay oem same exact one as stock,no need to drain coolant
Hey, can you recommend one so I get the right one? Thanks... here's a link I found: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Idle+Air+Control+Valve+95+honda+del+sol&_sacat=0
The one I bought doesn't work either... Someone just taught me that if you get the car warm where it starts to surge, if you disconnect the plug and the car runs perfect then it's the IACV... mine does that. Can you recommend a place to buy one that works>? I mean other than Honda? They want $300 for it....

Can anyone please help me I need a replacement bolt for the lower bolt can anyone tell me the exact sizes of the screw
Go to Honda dealer they will tell you/sell you one
I don’t understand why there’s coolant lines connected to a idle air valve. It doesn’t make sense to me.
GenAfterNextTactics so it doesn't freeze up
When it's cold your car idles high when you start it ,it's reading the coolant temp to make idle adjustments
What if the bolts broke in half
Good video but probably not a good idea to attempt to spray it still connected as the spray can enter the (black end) motor part of the IACV damaging the unit. Better to disassemble completely, hold vertically so that the black motor is upward so when spray (use straw) to clean -- the spray doesn't go upwards into the black motor area
Do u have to drain the coolant ?
+Omar Roman I've heard you don't have to, but if you don't when you take it off you'll get some coolant leaking out. Which can cause an air pocket in your system. This can create false readings, from sensors. I hate chasing ghosts.

Rosa Nieto a lot deals with idle, from the iacv, map sensor, throttle position sensor possibly the knock sensor and if not any of that it could be intake manifold gasket or a vacuum leak which is one of the hoses.
Why drain the coolant?
I don't think you need to drain the coolant.
Hey what s up...
I thought you were a mechanic. Why would you drain the coolant?
I feel like it depends how he was trained. Some mechanics dont take shortcuts and follow the manuals to the T. As an aircraft mechanic, i see some jobs with steps that i feel are needless , but they are steps i have to take according to the manual. iE. Everyone tells this guy not to drain the coolant.

Honestly that’s how I feel am not mechanically inclined but UA-cam can be your best friend already did my Idle vale, throttle body, egr valve myself
OK
This misguided me. This is not the IAC valve. This is the IAC sensor. The IAC valve is located on the other side of the throttle body and has one hose going into it. You should probably clean both but the valve is usually the bigger issue (actual valve may require disassembly or replacement). Also, when cleaning this part (sensor), you should spray throttle body cleaner into the pipes (where hoses connect). I recommend removing the part and doing this in a well lit place with adequate space.
I also do not recommend replacing this part unless absolutely necessary, as cars can be finicky about the replacement.
The valve is usually fine to replace... the sensor, better to clean.
you were misguided by whoever gave you that info. That is the Idle Air Control Valve he replaced. The one on the bottom is the Fast Idle Valve. Used for cold starts to warm up the engine quicker.
I changed mine on my 95 honda accord. Bought a new idle control valve with lifetime warranty. I still have high revs when I turn. Anyone know what else can be the issue?
Yes air in your coolant and or a sticky dirty throttle body thoe even vacuum leaks can cause that.
Eletric cleaner works better
so I shud use electric cleaner to clean this part in the video.
