  • Hi everyone!
This is my first non-PEBL review. I wanted to show you my wife's bike - the StreetStrider 8. It's a really great bike that keeps you standing, working your whole body, and gets you outside for fresh air instead of standing in front of the TV spinning your legs around on a machine.
My camera-man Trevor takes his first spin on the StreetStrider and doesn't fall off...
Ours is a bit older than the current 8s - ours has the same 8-speed hub in the rear, but includes calipers at the rear and sturmey-archer drums in the front. The other cycling components are standard basic parts.
Possible upgrades could be a different sized chainring on the drive, or at the rear for a different gear range, upgraded tires, upgraded reverse levers for better reach comfort in braking, external bottom bracket crankset for more stiffness and lighter-weight.
We bought this bike used from Craigslist out of Portland and picked it up for $800 down from the original price of $2200 for this model when it was new. These are available used all over the place so keep your eyes peeled.

Great review. I have one & can vouch for the WORKOUT aspect! This is nothing like riding a bike - it took me a couple months to work up to going 4 miles (given I was quite out of shape but I could do 3x that on my bike without any trouble). And it works your whole body because you really use your arms a lot.

    • @timothy3732

But for longer rides nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever be better than a bike.

      WTF you talking about?
Been riding bikes for many years on all sorts of trails and for many miles and the posture is not unhealthy and I have never had any problems.
This hunk of junk is competing with the bike but it cannot go on off road bike trails. It has a hell of a lot more limitations than a bike. A lot more.
Besides, sitting is more comfortable than standing and when this thing breaks down, and it will, the stupid yuppies won't know what to do and will shell out even more money getting it fixed.

Thanks for such an intelligent authentic review. You have convinced me to purchase the 8s instead of an elliptical machine. I am a retired long distance rider who sampled an elliptigo competitor 10 miles one morning and felt the most intense workout superior to my 12 miles of inline skating the day before. I can't wait to get my upper body involved and agree about with your "overpricing" remark on said product. So I will purchase the latest 8s aluminum frame model. Thanks for riding for you review - other reviewers miss this important experience. How would I know the difference between a BMW and Mercedes without driving either? Thanks.

I test rode a user/ambassador’s StreetStrider. I liked the idea of getting an upper body workout and standing up versus sitting down, which I do most of the day at work. It may have been that the one I tested was loosely assembled; but it felt very unstable while operating, especially while turning! I didn’t trust it to go in traffic, like I was planning to use it around town. I wound up buying an Elliptigo 8-speed off CraigsList for $1500 years ago and felt stable on it IMMEDIATELY. I usually ride recumbents, so it was WAY different style and perspective, but a fun and welcome one. It’s my afterwork exerciser. Also good for exploring; and climbs hills surprisingly well. Rolls great! I find it easier to maintain cadence and an even level of effort on recumbents, especially my trike. Thanks for sharing! Your build appears better than the one I rode; but for stability and portability, I like the Elliptigo more.

MrBiggles53 I ended up having to do a whole bunch of tightening up bolts and changing of the bolts to make this thing perform as well as it does. It definitely requires a bit of wrench work to begin with so it performs best. Thanks for your comment. The elliptical does ride nice

Does a regular bike really bother your ankle? Have you tried clipless cleats? They hold your feet in a particular position so you can push down push forward pull back and pull up for efficiency. Youd have to teach yourself to hold your ankle in s position where it won’t hurt or wear a brace but I think this could help. You could use this method with a regular bike, recumbent bike or trike. Maybe go see a cycling fit expert they may be able to help you

For years I've been a runner, but about 7 years ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and am having trouble keeping my balance. If I'm not careful it's easy for me to trip on a tiny crack in the pavement or slip on water. I noticed that in order to turn this bike left or right one needs to lean in that direction. I'm afraid that leaning too much might compromise my balance. I like the idea that this bike gives you a full-body workout (cardio exercise is one of the best things one can do to treat Parkinson's), but at the same time I'm concerned about balance. Any opinions on this? Many thanks.

    • @EricFischnaller
      @EricFischnaller  3 роки тому +2

I think this bike might be a bit ambitious given your balance concerns. Though it’s a trike, it’s not easy to turn especially sharply as you saw in the video I put my foot down at one point, and I have excellent balance. You might try a traditional recumbent trike to adventure outdoors on. A tadpole style has two wheels up front and single in the rear. They’re super stable, comfortable and fast but an excellent workout. For a more full body exercise try rowing.

Yup, and the stupid yuppies will shell out even more money to get it oiled because if they are dumb enough to buy this then they are dumb enough not to do a very easy clean and re oil job on the chain.

Stick with a "real" bike- I recommend Bianchi. This thing can't go far and it looks heavy and it's a lot of money.

This is the silliest thing I've ever seen. It's massively impractical. For this money you can get a fantastic bike that will help you burn just as many calories and will go anywhere. Ridiculous.

I can't ride a regular bike, today I tried. I have too many injuries it was ridiculous. I am thinking, though, standing up and not craning my neck might be the way to go in terms of getting on a bike path just to get out of the house and move a little.

      I totally agree Todd!
Yesterday I did a 20 or more mile BIKE ride and no way would I be able to haul all the gear I carried on one of these things let alone do all that distance. Plus I was on an off road trail and no way could this make it on it since it is designed for pavement only.
