Am I the only one hearing something breathing for the first hour or so? Ominous. Also I have a vivid memory of the first book starting with Elric in the dream chambers and a very lucid narration about the trips and countless lives they dream of there.
When this gets adapted, i really hope it gets into the hands of people who are huge fans, & not just the typical Hollywood treatment for being mined for the image. Hopefully a great adaptation.
Yeah. Conan the Barbarian is a prime example. Yes. The Arnold films were just money making blockbusters with the big action star pf the time. But they were amazing compared to the newest one. Jason Momoa was more than a decent pick for Conan, but the movie itself was a bland, rushed, and shallow story seasoned with cgi, some lame twists and turns that a dead man could see coming, and money to try and cover up the taste. Movies and shows should stay true to the books. GoT proved that. Did great until they ran out of source material and had to do it themselves. Granted, Martin was involved, but it just became the shit standard. Shallow, rushed, and contradicting stories. Characters that had once been multi faceted and with such depth that the wonderful actors actually brought them to life; then relegated to having clothes and lighting get darker in later seasons so people "realize it's getting serious, and dark". Characters that once made decisions that, although shocking at times, made sense because of the Character's character, or lack thereof. Instead we got events taking place and people making choices because the writers decided it would happen. We gotta figure this out. They can't bastardize our stories!!!!
An animated TV series would probably be the best option because the novels are basically just collections of somewhat-isolated stories and because there are many fantastical events and creatures in the story, so animation would save a ton of money that would otherwise be spent on CG
What an excellent narrator I mean wow 😮 completely immerses me into the story and I just feel like I'm on this grand adventure with elric every step of the way
I've had the good fortune to edit and publish a brand new Elric story, so I can say from personal experience that Mike is as wonderful a person as you could hope for.
I last read Elric in the 1970s when I was a teenager. I loved Michael Moorcocks worlds, you could really lose yourself in them. Judging by this, they stood the test of time! Thank you for the upload btw, I'm really enjoying it.
I'd never read these before. I can see how these stories could inspire so much that came after. All in all this seems to be the archetype for Dark Elves. The pale skin, the slavery, the creative brutality. It's amazing to hear the parallels.
Wow, neat-o observation! I read them when I was in high school around 1984-85 time frame because I had been playing D&D for a couple years and saw it in Appendix N. Reading fantasy was very important to players back then, even stuff not in that list. That said, I never played in a group that had emphasized Drow except going through Queen of the Demonweb Pits once. We all know that some of Gygax & the gang's ideas either came from or were supported by this book (like sentient swords, lawful and chaotic alignments, elementals in the monster manual, planes of existence). Now, re-reading this series many years later, it seems to me that the flavor of Melnibonean evil, that ranges from conflicted elegance (in Elric's case) to supportive indifference (in Dyvim Tvar's and Cymoril's cases) to myopic lust for power (in Yrkoon's case) would be an excellent model for someone who wanted to role play a drow. If I were DMing a campaign that heavily involved drow, I would recommend that the players read at least "Elric of Melnibone" to get an idea of the kinds of personas drow might have... Listen at 2:35:14. It is also a model for how to frame a campaign of evil PCs so they don't just become murder hobos, but rather "work" for some shot caller who restricts their use of violence so that it is used primarily for the evil lord (or crime boss's) purposes. (Evil is an alignment to a force or cause, not a free for all.) We did a campaign setting and home brew rule set with evil characters that we called "Blackblade" that was modeled on this approach. Our evil characters served this mysterious being called "The Overlord" who basically told us what quests we would take, which allowed us to switch DM every couple weeks so everyone could both play and DM. (We did mini two-session "railroad" quests with a new DM every two weeks, and made it so that if you DMed your PC would get the same experience as if the player had played the PC in the adventure.) In a more low-fantasy approach, all you have to do is watch mafia documentaries to understand "the boss," "territory," and how they try to avoid police attention to get an idea how evil PCs might be controlled ...You demonstrate the importance of fantasy literacy and reading fantasy to the fantasy RGP player, not just consuming it form movies and video games, which seems to have become lost on newer players. Great stuff!!!
This is beautifully read, many thanks ... takes me back to my stoner days in my 20s when I would buy 2nd hand sci-fi and fantasy ... each book took me months to read, because I'd never remember it in the morning! As a writer I love the dialogue, even though there's sorcery, dragons, magic swords etc, the conversations between the characters are, for the most part, believable and realistic, giving the whole thing a credibility some fantasy lacks ... lovely stuff ❤

One other dark fantasy setting that ripped off Moorcock here is Legacy of Kain: Soul devouring sword Reluctant white haired sorcerer emporer turned anti-hero Dying race / dying empire I cannot stop thinking about this since the reader here sounds so much like Simon Templeman
Fabulous audio book. Listening to this, decades since I last read the book, one thing becomes quite clear: George Martin f___ing ripped off the whole vibe and concept, shamelessly: A waning dragon culture, white hair, Byzantine court intrigues, ultra violence and torture, good/evil characters, my God the list goes on. How pathetic.
Yeah it does seem that he was heavily inspired by Moorcock's stories, but thankfully he is a talented writer (though much lazier in recent years). Sorry bout the snoring/breathing in some of this audio book, hope it still sufficed for a nice trip down memory lane.
I'm fairly sure Moorcock didn't invent court intrigue (or "good / evil characters", whatever that means). It is for sure interesting to see the similarities in many more modern fantasy tales, though. Like the brooding, ostracized white-haired swordsman who uses potions to enhance his strength, which is straight up Geralt from the Witcher books.
George has jam packed ASOIAF with allusions. He uses them as cyphers to solve background secrets. I am not familiar with Moorcock’s stuff enough yet, but I think mostly it’s to make “eternal hero?” connections with Elric/Corum/Jack between the Targaryens and Jaqen: I.E. Jaqen is a Targaryen heir, also Mance( aka Aegon the not-dead-baby) and Hawkmoon?

(Other allusions imply he’s still alive elsewhere, the reader hasn’t seen him yet in theory since Syrio we know was Jaqen) and has been given a massive cash to get his revenge. Jaqen has a list like Ayra and like Ayra it has people on it who are actually innocent of Jaqen’s accusations like Ned. Jaqen is the one actually talking to Ned in the Cells face changing from Robert ( Jaqen was the one who poisoned him, sorta Theseus returning home in disguise to “face” his “father” killing the “great white bore” Robert. Both Cercei and Lancel think the other did it.) to Petyr and then into creepy crawlies (just like Kindly Man and Euron face changing). Ned was too delirious to make sense but confused Jaqen with denying what Jaqen thought he knew from the people he talked to, Jaqen decided to wait in the cells as Jaqen and get sent to the Wall with Ned to get the truth of Tower of Joy and his parentage, probably thinking Ned is his Dad (Theseus confronting his father) and Lyanna is his Mother (the main payoff for “Starcest” clues). “Jack will jump over the candle(dragonglass)stick “ to kill Euron (on the revenge list) next book with Sam (LOTR Frodo and Sam…. vs. orc to steal armor), Jaqen will steal Euron’s armor and patch (Princess Bride ?Dread Pirate Roberts? Allusion), Jaqen will “facechange” (actually his real face as a twin) into Jon confusing Sam (and the reader) since Jon should be dead and hasn’t come back yet and is too far away even if he survived the stabbing. this will get even more confusing for the reader when Jon is resurrected later, and triply confusing when Euron fights Jon at the Wall only to face reveal as Jon in Euron’s (actually Rhaegar’s rubiless armor) just without Jon’s face-scars (twin-tell trope not seen on Jon’s vision). “How can this be me?” (Probably misquoted ruffly the same) It’s your brother Jon….

Yeah though it was completely unintended it was nice for me to be able to review my sleep. There's a part when I laugh for some reason, but it was timely as Elric was summoning Arioch.
Yes, but with Michael Moorcock one could argue that you can start wherever you'd like, especially since he wrote a lot of them out of order. I started with this one and got hooked, but instead of reading 'The Fortress of the Pearl' second like I did, I'd recommend 'Sailor on the Seas of Fate' next.

Probably about 2 or so, but I do break it up into more convenient times, such as when I walk somewhere (which is quite often since I don't drive). I have got in a habit of reading every single day, though some days are a bit light on quantity I find that it still adds up fast resulting in finishing many more books per year.

It is what it is, recorded it while sleeping (but at least it's not a honking snore), and being a very good recorder it picks up every noise, unfortunately though in this case. Can't find any other time to record any others because of the daytime sounds and cars, but if I happen to sleep in the living room for some reason I'll be sure to record another one.
I like the books but let's be real. Elric is a terrible ruler and an asshole in general. He should've just executed yrkoon and left tvar in charge while he travels or even cymoril or rattlebones aka someone loyal. For a century old wise wizard he surely behaves like an angsty teen in a rebellious phase.

I don't think there's anything in the story of Elric that Hollywood has any interest in. I myself am grateful for that.

As a writer I love the dialogue, even though there's sorcery, dragons, magic swords etc, the conversations between the characters are, for the most part, believable and realistic, giving the whole thing a credibility some fantasy lacks ... lovely stuff ❤

Yeah I can hear a weird background breathing. Now either I'm developing emphysema ( damn that filthy pipeweed ) or this voice recording is summoning the " Elder Gods" ala Evil Dead 2. Mind you I am enjoying the reading, but I do object to the fact that I'm being used as a conduit for the Dark Ones. Yes his pronunciation of it is funny and beneath the high station of Elric , but I could be wrong. Drizzt Du’urden from house Daermon N'a'shezbaernon of Menzoberranzan has a unique name that may be difficult to pronounce for some.

Fabulous audio book. Listening to this, decades since I last read the book, one thing becomes quite clear: George Martin f___ing ripped off the whole vibe and concept, shamelessly: A waning dragon culture, white hair, Byzantine court intrigues, ultra violence and torture, good/evil characters, my God the list goes on. How pathetic.
Yeah it does seem that he was heavily inspired by Moorcock's stories, but thankfully he is a talented writer (though much lazier in recent years). Sorry bout the snoring/breathing in some of this audio book, hope it still sufficed for a nice trip down memory lane.
I'm fairly sure Moorcock didn't invent court intrigue (or "good / evil characters", whatever that means). It is for sure interesting to see the similarities in many more modern fantasy tales, though. Like the brooding, ostracized white-haired swordsman who uses potions to enhance his strength, which is straight up Geralt from the Witcher books.
George has jam packed ASOIAF with allusions. He uses them as cyphers to solve background secrets.
I am not familiar with Moorcock’s stuff enough yet, but I think mostly it’s to make “eternal hero?” connections with Elric/Corum/Jack between the Targaryens and Jaqen: I.E. Jaqen is a Targaryen heir, also Mance( aka Aegon the not-dead-baby) and Hawkmoon?

Valarian is Aegon, Lorathi is Jaqen same name different cultures/languages) just like Ayra won’t give up her name in the future). Like the Count of Monty Cristo, Jaqen has returned home trained by a mentor Syrio who is ?dead?!? Now?!? (Other allusions imply he’s still alive elsewhere, the reader hasn’t seen him yet in theory since Syrio we know was Jaqen) and has been given a massive cash to get his revenge. Jaqen has a list like Ayra and like Ayra it has people on it who are actually innocent of Jaqen’s accusations like Ned. Jaqen is the one actually talking to Ned in the Cells face changing from Robert ( Jaqen was the one who poisoned him, sorta Theseus returning home in disguise to “face” his “father” killing the “great white bore” Robert. Both Cercei and Lancel think the other did it.) to Petyr and then into creepy crawlies (just like Kindly Man and Euron face changing). Ned was too delirious to make sense but confused Jaqen with denying what Jaqen thought he knew from the people he talked to, Jaqen decided to wait in the cells as Jaqen and get sent to the Wall with Ned to get the truth of Tower of Joy and his parentage, probably thinking Ned is his Dad (Theseus confronting his father) and Lyanna is his Mother (the main payoff for “Starcest” clues). “Jack will jump over the candle(dragonglass)stick “ to kill Euron (on the revenge list) next book with Sam (LOTR Frodo and Sam…. vs. orc to steal armor), Jaqen will steal Euron’s armor and patch (Princess Bride ?Dread Pirate Roberts? Allusion), Jaqen will “facechange” (actually his real face as a twin) into Jon confusing Sam (and the reader) since Jon should be dead and hasn’t come back yet and is too far away even if he survived the stabbing. this will get even more confusing for the reader when Jon is resurrected later, and triply confusing when Euron fights Jon at the Wall only to face reveal as Jon in Euron’s (actually Rhaegar’s rubiless armor) just without Jon’s face-scars (twin-tell trope not seen on Jon’s vision).

Yes, but with Michael Moorcock one could argue that you can start wherever you'd like, especially since he wrote a lot of them out of order. I started with this one and got hooked, but instead of reading 'The Fortress of the Pearl' second like I did, I'd recommend 'Sailor on the Seas of Fate' next.

How many hours do you ready daily?
Probably about 2 or so, but I do break it up into more convenient times, such as when I walk somewhere (which is quite often since I don't drive). I have got in a habit of reading every single day, though some days are a bit light on quantity I find that it still adds up fast resulting in finishing many more books per year.

It is what it is, recorded it while sleeping (but at least it's not a honking snore), and being a very good recorder it picks up every noise, unfortunately though in this case. Can't find any other time to record any others because of the daytime sounds and cars, but if I happen to sleep in the living room for some reason I'll be sure to record another one.

I like the books but let's be real. Elric is a terrible ruler and an asshole in general. He should've just executed yrkoon and left tvar in charge while he travels or even cymoril or rattlebones aka someone loyal.
