Me too!!! Thanks for checking out the Louisiana Simple Living channel, the Spring Garden 101: Planning Basics video and hopefully the entire Spring Garden 101 series. Thanks again and I really appreciate you checking out the channel!
I'm on board here in Vermilion parish. This will be my first year attempting a garden. I made a 15' x 5' platform using pallets and added wheels to it. I'll be using a dozen 10 gallon grow bags to start. I think that's big enough while I learn. Thank you for your channel! Every tip helps us newbies tremendously!
NELA here (Ouachita Parish). We just use a rule of thumb to not plant before April 1st. As we do containers in our little garden, we use plants and seldom sow seeds. We found our attempt at raised beds was an invitation to fire ants. Nice, and well done video. Grow Dat.
Thanks for checking out the video! I don't plant out until at least mid March and really look at the weather trends to make sure. It's not worth it to set out too early.
I'm confident you will be successful and will have a very green thumb. First time out, make it simple, and don't try to grow too much. Let me know any questions and I can't wait to hear how the raised bed garden does!!
I've started making my beds and hope to start some seed soon. I have been gathering cardboard, leaves and pine mulch, cardboard and logs. I have a load of potting mix from local garden supply. This week is seed gathering and planting time, then I will work on bed building. I'm covering grassy areas and am willing to weed as much as is necessary to avoid tilling. I do have the space for larger tilled beds but am mostly interested in no till permaculture type beds. I am lucky to have some already established mature blueberry bushes and plum trees and a persimmon tree that I will be planting guilds around. Looking forward to seeing how and what you plant. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much as well!! I got some blueberry bushes in containers and get a pretty decent harvest. My favorite is the pink lemonade blueberries. There's nothing like walking into the garden and grabbing a few for energy!! I've got a few figs but the birds get to them usually before I can. I also have 2 cherry, 2 pear, and 2 avocado trees that are only 1 or 2 years old so no fruit as yet. I'm jealous with your plum and persimmon trees!! Shoot me some pictures of your no-till permaculture beds as you start seeing success in them. I know you are going to have a great Spring garden. Thanks again!!
Hello neighbor Livingston Parish here. I just found your channel. I’m happy to follow you now. Can’t wait to learn anything new about growing in our area.
Lafourche Parish here. I am finding this too late for a spring garden but I am currently planning out my fall garden. I'll use the summer for construction. Thanks for the information!
Just found you! I am in Spring TX. I think the couple days will be the last freeze. I usually bring in potting spoil. Till in my raised garden beds. Then start planting! I will hope to get the grand kids to help.
Sounds great, thanks for checking out the channel! I agree, we should be good after this last freeze! I was tempted to plant last weekend but decided to be patient. Getting your grand kids to help is a great idea. I know I got my passion for gardening from my Dad. Thanks again!
I have always wanted to start my garden and I never know where to begin. Thanks for giving me the knowledge of where I need to look. I don’t understand the charts that you show to well, I’m in the central port of Louisiana. I don’t really know my zone. I started a few things this year, just to test the waters. I planted tomatoes blackberries, bell pepper all in buckets. I have received maybe a handful of each and they were pretty good next year I want to try the big one planting in the ground.
You are so welcome! You are in either Zone 8B or 9A. They are pretty similar with timing off maybe a week or two so no big difference. Glad you got started even with containers. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Hi just found and subscribed! I live in Mobile, so your information will be very helpful for me and my husband. We have been dabbling for a while, learning hit and miss.
Welcome!! I'm so glad you liked the videos and subscribed! I've got some good friends in Saraland and was travelling there for work but no longer have to. Thanks again!!
Just subscribed and I’m starting my first garden ever! Raised beds and containers. I am so happy I found you. I’m in slaughter Louisiana and it’s nice to have someone in the area to learn from!
I’m a Philly PA transplant to hancock Co MS been here 9 years. I learned ‘summer’ growing in zone 7 is spring and fall here in 9a. So we have 2 grow seasons, roughly Jan-July and July-nov, with a ‘dead spot’ July and august where basically all that likes that heat is peppers and eggplant and okra 😂. I’m still learning, but I’ve also learned we get a freeze in april quite often so I don’t plant out until after Easter just incase.
We won't hold it against you that you are from PA. Just kidding, you have been here 9 years now so we will call you one of our own. As for the freeze, mid-March is our last frost date with a 30% level of confidence. Last year, I did put them out around that time and we did have a close to frost night or two and I was worried. I did cover most of my plant with either plastic pots or even some small trash cans. I didn't lose anything so I was happy with that. Welcome to our Louisiana Simple Living community and channel!
@@LouisianaSimpleLiving Thanks! I’m always looking for local growers you guys know what it’s all about down here! We almost moved here in March the year Katrina hit, we would have lost everything if we had done so. Everything happens for a reason, and we wound up in the perfect house with a nice 2 acres to grow on. I’m loving it!
That's great! You will be so satisfied that you are growing your own vegetables in your first raised bed garden. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
@@crnagal That depends what region you are in and the date of your last freeze. If Zone 9A, its a bit late for tomatoes, peppers, etc. You might be better off waiting until the last freeze and then transplant some from your local plant nursery. However, we have a long enough spring and summer season so it wouldn't necessarily hurt to go ahead and start some seeds indoors recognizing you will only get maybe 4 weeks of a head start vs the 7- 8 weeks I'll end up getting from planting in January. There are also plenty of vegetables you can go ahead and direct sow now (e.g. carrots, radishes, sugar snap peas, beans, etc.). Again, this all depends on what plant hardiness zone you are in and your last freeze/frost date?
@@crnagal So, you've got a choice. Again, you can go ahead and sow some seeds indoors. For tomatoes, peppers and eggplants, you will still get ahead by a month or so. Otherwise, you can get plants from Clegg's Nursery or other location and plant after the last freeze date. Either way, you are going to appreciate how you've now got a green thumb, LOL.
Nice to see a channel in louisiana. New gardener looking to learn. Do you do anything to extend your season like using shade cloth. I would like to grow greens year round. Looking for heat tolerant leafy greens if you know of any.
I've never used any shade cloth and have not had a lot of luck with varieties of greens year round other than swiss chard and Malabar spinach. Thanks for checking Louisiana Simple Living out!!
Try tree collards I’ve just moved here from California 9b dessert and they last through the heat . I don’t know how they will handle the humidity here. Still learning 6 months here.
Hello, i’m so happy to have found your channel today June 30, 2021. I have started a garden this year and it’s been quite interesting and fun. Funniest thing is I somehow grew a pumpkin when I thought I was growing a cantaloupe but then I said “No that’s a watermelon. Well it’s a pumpkin, one pumpkin on the vine but it’s really cool and nice and big. What do I know? I really couldn’t tell you how that happened I think I had seeds saved in my kitchen in anticipation of gardening. I have an inground garden which is being flooded out with all this rain but I have grow bag gardening and another area and they are doing pretty good though somewhere affected by the rain.
I'm so happy you found the channel today as well!! We've had sooo much rain in Louisiana here the last month or two as well. As for seeds, I have enough to probably feed 1000 people for years, LOL. Thanks for checking out the videos!
Looking for info to start a raised bed fall garden in Slidell, 9a, 1 block off a bayou and 1 1/2 mile from the lake. Would love any helpful suggestions you may provide. Love ❤️
Sounds great! You can check out the video: "Spring Garden 101: Building a New Raised Bed" @ ua-cam.com/video/WVRbp9ViwAY/v-deo.html to get an idea. There are many ways to build your raised bed. But, most importantly, consider the soil mix I discussed in that video. It does require some hard work but pays off season after season. Regardless, try to make sure you amend with a blend of compost so the nutrients will be available for your plants. I'm so excited for you. No matter how you build your raised bed, and what soil mix you put in it, you will enjoy getting out in the garden and playing around in the dirt. I know it sounds crazy but it's very satisfying and you get a great feeling of accomplishment when you harvest your first cabbage, or broccoli, or whatever. Keep in touch as I'm interested in how it goes!!!
Juanita - Welcome to Louisiana Simple Living!! Thanks for checking out the channel and look forward to you sending me some cool pictures of your great harvest! What are you planning to plant?
Where is the best place to get my seeds for Louisiana? I did the Walmart seeds last year and they didn’t do so well. I would like recommendations for a good brand.
I’m in Lafayette Louisiana and am looking for a new hobby. Thought I could get into gardening this spring but am I too late? Would it be better to wait for the fall?
Your definitely are not too late. You will want to go buy your tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants from your local nursery and get them in the ground fairly quick before our brutal summer heat gets going every day. Doing any of these types of vegetable from seed would take too much time if starting at this point.
In my experience, I've always used the planting dates (i.e. relative to last frost/freeze dates) for raised bed planting and never had a problem. Thanks for asking!
There's not a whole lot we can do with this heat. They are just going to slow up production. I still got some coming in but have slowed way up. I've got those leaf-footed bugs annoying me by biting into the ones coming ripe. I just kill them with my hands or run them off.
I know sweatshirts are not needed right now but I do have some sweatshirts/hoodies, long-sleeves, and short-sleeves @ louisianasimpleliving.myshopify.com/. I've got some Louisiana Simple Living branding merch , as well as, some gardening and even a Halloween t-shirt. Check it out if you get a chance. It's greatly appreciated!!!
