It's amazing how many types of fruit trees respond to this type of harsh pruning. We have a dozen large shade trees. I have a crew that prunes them on a two or three year rotation. The last time they came, they used only battery powered chain saws. Told me they use them in neighborhoods and developments to keep the noise down. With the exception of the giant chipper running from time to time, I barely knew they were here. Was so impressed, I did some research and bought myself a small 12 inch bar battery saw. Quiet and excellent for pruning low hanging branch between their regular visits. The farm look great. Hope it doesn't get cold enough to be a true killing frost! Have a wonderful and safe holiday.

How are your new AC/Heat pumps working in this cold weather. Is it keeping the house nice and warm? How does the cost of running it compare with the cost of using wood in the past?

Wow thats some extreme pruning. As old as those trees I’d be worried about getting growth branches back. But I guess they know what they are doing.
The older and more established they are, the quicker and more vigorous the return is. As they have bigger and deeper roots, they regrow quite quickly.
In 2 or 3 years they'll be pruning like this again.
That's how it's done. Soon the trees are back to normal.

Wondering how the locals would make a fire where you are. Here in the North it's óleo e pneus usado.
I'm not sure, I've always just made a small wood fire to make a bed of coals before throwing branches and leaves on
