    I recall when a diesel engine had only one wire that switched it off and the handbrake was a lever on the floor.
    But that was to simple to leave.
    You are proving Warren that the modern "mechanic" has to have sound logic and electrical knowledge today.

    Warren the master diagnostic troubleshooter! How many ‘Certified Technicians’ would have changed the switch, the relay, and maybe even the starter and may not have even realized that it was the diode. There’s not too many guys left like you. I appreciate your videos and the work that you put into them. Thank you. John from Ontario, Canada- eh!!

    Now you need to teach people how to use a DVM. There’s a ton of tech’s that have no idea how to use them. I’m from the old school, repaired alternators, starters, most anything that needs to be fixed. Great troubleshooting buddy!

    I always hated the automatic electric parking brakes on the JD backhoes as an operator on them. Too much "nanny state" type.
    Once again, excellent work diagnosing this and finding that needle in the haystack 👍.
    I had a similar situation with our dog last week. After being told no by 3 vet offices in a row, we finally got help at the emergency vet clinic and $750 later were back in action. Good luck with the pup.

  • @jameshollingsworth4714

    Good catch on the diode; they are widely used these days, across coils to suppress the reverse spike that happens when an actuator is de-energized. For fun, take any small coil, such as a 12v relay, (with no diode) hold the two coil pins between two fingers, and apply 12 volts. Nothing happens except the relay closes. Then, still holding the relay, disconnect the 12 volts. You will probably notice a nasty jolt, which is reverse emf. Big killer of ECUs Although only 12v went in, many times that will come out, which is the diode's job to intercept. Diodes used in this manner, when they fail, are easy to spot, as fuses blow when powering the actuator. Diodes are also used to isolate circuits in tricky setups like this parking brake Rube Goldberg invention. Much harder to solve and fix. I love watching you tackle the tough ones. Keep em coming.

    Hi Warren,
    I had something like that happen to a puppy that jumped down from the kennel and got ran over by the other pups, he sounded like he broke his shoulder on a Saturday night, got it X-rayed on Sunday at a call-in clinic, nothing broken and figured out it was soft tissue damage with the radial nerve in the shoulder. Get some anti-inflammatories and pain relief, 2 weeks later he was back to normal raising hell with the other pups. The litter size was 16 rhodesian ridgebacks of pups. That was back in the mid-90's. I grew up horse farming and worked on many injuries with the racehorses, but it pulls on your heart strings when stuff like that happens to your pets in pain.

    Diodes are the wonder of the electronics world (next to a transistor). They do wonderful things, but then you put them in heavy equipment, they are almost the last things guys check when it comes to issues. You thankfully know JD "loves diodes".. Nice catch Warren. Always great to find it before you start pulling plugs and measuring oil pressures and other more involved stuff. Hope Josey is just doing the "slow mend" from being mowed over by the other dog. Thanks for the Share, here's to Josey being OK and Stay Safe Sir! Thanks & Cheers!

    Thanks for the great information! I was a dumbass and replaced the parking switch and pressure sensor hoping that would be the issue.
    Wasted $100 bucks or so. It was the capacitor in the relay. The local auto parts store one and $39 for one I got two delivered for $10 from Amazon
    I’m going to use the relay is an antitheft device when I leave it on remote job sites since it’s definitely immobilizes the machine

    Diodes are known as electrical filters. Like Warren said they are kind of like check valves consisting of two parts, anode and a cathode, where alternating current can jump the anode but cant jump back from cathode thus converting AC current into DC current. The frequency of the chattering relay should match the RPM of the alternator because of the lack of a functioning AC filter. (diode)

    • @sharkyrich4844
      @sharkyrich4844 2 роки тому +1

      @Chuck Kirchner Arranging multiple diodes can form a full-wave bridge rectifier. They are not technically called filters in a professional environment, but they do just that. They filter AC from the circuit.

    Once again Warren you present a clinic on troubleshooting/problem solving, I really hope you don't have to endure "oh it was just a diode" (implying empirical reasoning on their part).
    While I doubt Josey is little more than banged up (most babies are very rubber like) it's a good idea to get the vet to look at her just to be sure, the last thing you need is to lose your tiny companion, it's obvious you two are fond of each other in the special way that only happens now and then.

    There are some motorcycles that have a hidden diode within the wiring harness. Those can fail too and cause all manner of problems. Owners often fire the parts cannon at the motorcycle and still the problem remains - the hidden diode (often taped over in the wiring bundle!) being the real problem.
    Must say it was a head bust finding that one Warren.

    In alternators they'll usually use a Zener Regulator Diode which allows current in both directions, but mostly only in one direction. It's like a limiting diode, so to speak. I believe they call it "avalanche current" in a Zener Diode? That most likely isn't the problem with what you have going on here though. Your situation looks like it calls for just a common one way only diode function.

    You did good diodes are confusing when you do not have the big picture and can have quite a few functions but mainly as "anti ringing " on relay coils but also can be used as "steering" circuits similar to an array of check valves in hydraulic circuits. Not the easiest of fixes even for someone with an electrical background and could take "forever" without a schematic as you need to isolate individual components as you do not know where stuff is going!

    • @RenewTheRWandBlue
      @RenewTheRWandBlue 2 роки тому

      .002 ohms just meant there was little resistance to current flow. The significant part was that there was .002 ohms in either direction through the diode. If the diode had been good, the meter would have shown low resistance to current flow in one direction, and infinite resistance in the other.
