The US already beat them once in the Cold War, they don't think they need to do it again. The best way of persuading the US to help in Ukraine is to point out that victory for Putin is a victory for Xi Jinping. If the US won't defend Ukraine, not even just by supplying weapons, if they seem scared of standing up to Putin in any way then Xi Jinping will conclude that they are very unlikely to go to war with China to save Taiwan. Also, if Russia get everything they want out of a Ukraine peace deal, even though they are the aggressor, that sets a precedent for China to get away legally with annexing Taiwan (they claim it was always part of China anyway, just as Putin claims that Ukraine is not a real country and is historically part of Russia). If China could take Taiwan and the US did nothing then the US loses influence in the region - it is no longer reliable as an ally and other countries will feel they have to start being more subservient to China who will have proved they are the real power in the region. The US does not want to go to war over Taiwan, their aim should be to deter China from invading Taiwan in the first place. Keep China in their box. But to do that they cannot show weakness in Europe.
