Dutchman here, these canal houses actually were built back in what we call the golden age (around the 1700's) for storage, that's why they're built so close to the water so that ships could come in through the canal and all the spices and stuff could be stored immediately. From the top of my head the attics where used for storage, the middle parts where offices, and the basements where 'houses' for the poor people.
As per this, you really do learn something new everyday :)
my city (harbor district) has those too and I often wonder if people have accidentally dropped things sitting at an open window/wind have blown something out. All that I've seen were directly on the water, no walkway on the canal side of the building

@@mariaisabelrunnel3214 The Netherlands is indeed very cool (though it is currently very hot), and just so you know Holland is a specific part of the Netherlands, so some Dutchies might get a bit prickly if you call the whole country Holland.
A Dutch inspired world would look so beautiful in The Sims. Canals, bright colorful houses, flower fields, bike paths for the sims to ride their bikes on...
That would be absolutely amazing, I think it would look so good. Maybe it could come with an update to change heights (for all us tall dutch people😉)

As a Amsterdammer I fell into the canal once when I was 4 and I almost drowned because my foot got stuck in a bicycle at the bottom of the canal… But I am alive and well!! Ps. Yeah we hate Rotterdam it’s kinda like seeing other schools at a school trip it’s just the way it’s just ✨meant to be✨

Top of my wish list is a mixed lot trait. My sims would own far more businesses if they could live on the same lot (officially as opposed to ‘making do’).
it would be so cool to create commercial, residential, and entertainment districts on one lot that actually functions as they’re supposed to

it seems like they could use the For Rent mechanics where you go room by room and assign them a "lot type". Maybe there could be only one lot type that allows it like 'mixed-use lot' then that would let you assign room usage!
As a Dutch woman you are forgiven about the roofs, they’re funky as hell and it’s difficult to make in the sims! Great build! I love seeing stuff like this!

@@jeca765There’s probably something in debug that mimics the shape of a windmill, not 100% sure though 🤷🏻♀️
@@jeca765 there's electronic windmills iirc! not sure what they're called, but i saw my friend place some a few days back. and even if those can't be used (because that's probably not the kind of windmill you'd go for to build) it doesn't actually have to move because sometimes the mills don't either. it'd be hard to replicate, but you could come pretty far with some funky roof placement aswell!

i love chat reassuring you that bike usage in the netherlands is absolutely feral
theres so many bikes at the bottom of canals they regularly have to clear them out to ensure ships can still pass and stuff

Kayla, you could build in the sims houses around the world you know, like, in one video you build a London's house, then in another a New Zealand's house and so on. That would be very cool!

I'm Dutch, and what you said about the public bathrooms made me really laugh. I have never been to a shop that has a public bathroom, only the reaaaaly big stores like Bijenkorf or a giant Hema with a restaurant has them. Usually when you're in a store and ask for the bathroom, they'll look at you really funny, you cant use the bathrooms in general supermarkets or just an h&m or any other normal store hahah.

Here in Dronten at the Appie they have a toilet for the public. But you have to ask to use it.

I AGREE! I want another pet kit too! Maybe even a game pack with smaller pets like birds, lizards, house rabbits, even tarantulas. Sims 1 and 3 were so rich in that area and quite honestly I want that more than fairies or cars

The Rotterdam vs Amsterdam thing is mostly seen in soccer, however I'm not from Amsterdam so the rivalry is probably much more intense if you're a true born and raised 'Amsterdammer' haha. If there is an Ajax (Amsterdam) and Feyenoord (Rotterdam) match, I kid you not, there are hundreds of policemen all around the stadium. They even have to use ME (mobile unit - special police forces specifically to combat riots). It's insane. My mom was born in a village near Rotterdam (Spijkenisse), and she was denied entry on the side of the stadium where the most intense Ajax fans sit because they thought she would be violent towards the Ajax fans, even though she was one herself. Based on her place of birth. Crazy haha.

The way I see it, it's like Manchester and Liverpool in England 😂 I'm not English but my dad's a longtime fan of Liverpool FC and one of my brothers supports Man United so it's like 😬😬😬 every time football gets mentioned in the family group chat 😅
The hate can still be intense from people not born there! I know someone from my small village (near Belgium) and her partner refuses to go to Amsterdam because he’s a Feyenoord fan.
That roofing in the Sims is incredible. It may not be a perfect representation of Dutch housing, but, for the Sims, I think you did an incredible job.
I've only been to the Netherlands once, and I loved it so much I am now trying to learn Dutch, as it was possibly the most accessible place I've ever been as a wheelchair user (though Amsterdam itself did break my wheelchair due to the cobbles).

If you like this style of houses, then you might like the traditional "Herenhuis" (Neorenaissance) too. Those are bigger and dating around 1880 till 1920.
21:49 I think a pet pack focused on new pets would be really cool! Like, there could be reptiles or other unique pets. And as a way to get more pet stuff for pets like cats and dogs, there could be pets like chincillas or something that would use cat trees, or house pigs or bunnies that would use pet beds, or whatever. This way, the pack functions fully on its own (ex. You wouldn't get a cat tree that you can't use cuz only cats use them because other pets would be able to use them now) but still works really well if you have the existing pet packs. And it could also be in a different style (different compared to coastal Cats and Dogs and to colourful My First Pet Stuff) so pets fit more aesthetics. Like a chic style could be cool, or luxury. Like, I could see a luxury sim wanting a fancy snake enclosure, or a preppy, spoiled child getting a sugar glider or something. I just think a pet pack with new pets and pet stuff that functions on its own but also for existing pets would be awesome!!

As a Dutchie born in Amsterdam, I loved watching you build these canal houses.
It's true that the people from Amsterdam, including me who has never lived in Amsterdam, have a rivalry with Rotterdam, especially because of the football (or soccer, to say it in American English).
The city I grew up in and still live in, we, as people from the biggest city in the province we're from, we have a rivalry with the capital city of the province.
People who aren't from the same province as I am, most of the time say bad things about the city I'm from. And I always respond that they haven't been to the capital city, which is way worse place to live.
OMG Kayla please talk more about books. I love reading and one of my favourite things is getting book reccomendations or listening to someone ramble about the books they like. In one of the previous videos you talked about A Good Girl's Guide trilogy that I wanted to read and you mentioning it motivated me to start the book sooner.

as someone who doesn’t have cats and dogs but has my first pet stuff (got it when it was free) i kinda like it 😅 sure there’s stuff i cant even access but the stuff available to me is stuff i use a Lot. especially the activity table and bookshelf

Great buildings! I need to say that the flower shop makes perfect sense in Amsterdam as Holland is known worldwide for tulip cultivation :)

I semi agree with the sims team dropping another pet pack. Instead of releasing a new one, they refresh my first pet stuff. Adding more rodents, maybe reptiles, and adding proper enclosers for them. That would make the pack worth it to me.

I heard somewhere that the reason they’re so skinny is because it was more expensive to built out, but cheaper to build up.

This style of build remind me a LOT of the ones we have here in Recife Antigo (Brazil). Its kind of cool to think about because they were originally built by Dutchman people who came to the northeastern portion of the country (the region where Recife Antigo is located) during the colonial period here.
We still have most of those buildings preserved there, but it's still functional as a part of the city. We have theaters, restaurants, stores on the inside of the buildings, but the exterior part is completely preserved.
It was just SO FUN to see the similarities between the building styles and the historical reason for it!!
I know its not family friendly but it would be really funny if you got basemental and made a "coffee shop" as one of the shops. i guess that just means i gotta do it. I love this tho and mad i never thought of doing it before. I have been to amsterdam twice and you definitely nailed the vibe with the exterior!

I love these townhouses! It's great to see builds that are not American. It makes me wish I had For Rent so I could make some functional ones myself!
Amsterdam is really touristy but if you're looking for a calmer experience you can visit "Leiden". I've been there several times and I think it has a similar vibe just a little calmer (I'm not Dutch that's just my experience from visiting)

Mini apartaments just hit home for me. My first apartment was with my bf and his brother(2 small bedrooms, 1 TINY MICRO bathroom and kitchen). In my room i was forced to squeze around the bed or scoot to acces rest of the room. Also the bathroom 💀💀 im 5’2 and sitting on the toilet i was able to put my feet in the bath, and put my arms on washingmaschine and sink at the same time.

19:26 You know, if you're not good with mixing colours or creating diverse palletes, there's websites that give you premade colourpalletes. Maybe it could be a fun challenge to pick one of those palletes with like 6 colours and build a house with that colourscheme, trying to integrate almost all colours into every room.

As someone who was a born and raised in Amsterdam I am so impressed by your skills! It looks so good! I grew up in a canal house myself, third floor (or you would probably call it fourth floor) and it was tiny (and not so expensive) but still enough room for me and my mom. Really well done!
I myself don't live in the big city anymore but am surrounded by tulip fields where I live now. So I guess I went from one Dutch stereotype to another, hahaha. Sadly the tulips aren't in bloom right now but there's still so much to do and see in this country besides that. So I hope you enjoyed yourself in the Netherlands and got to see all the beauty in Amsterdam as well as Rotterdam.
I hate for rent it's a total waste not only that it's laggy it doesn't let me buy a rental it's was just a waste if anyone knows how to fix it please let me know!

This was amaazing!!! I grew up in Amsterdam and this is pretty spot on! Shops over here usually dont have toilets in them except for staff! I especially loved the florist!!!❤
I liked when they gave us the ball of yarn in Knitting Stuff that worked as a pet toy. I feel like it wouldn't be that hard to give some items in new packs some extra functionality for pets. Especially if the model is already perfect for it.

The lesbian florist apartment was my absolute favorite, the colours were everything 💖 and I want to be them lol✨
The Sims could try do a Kitty Kit and a Doggy Kit, both with the help of a creator. "Who is our greatest cat lover Simmer and who is our greatest dog lover Simmer?" As a cat lover I could see wall shelves cats can scale and use, a more tasteful looking laser litter box, a kitty bed like Snap's, a cat window perch, a cute cat planter with cat grass, a nicer looking cat door, a book shelf or side table that functions as a kitty "house"...
Dogs? A leash holder that is smaller than the ridiculously large, chunky one in Cats and Dogs, functional pee pads, a faux fire hydrant for funsies, fluffier looking dog beds for both sizes, a nicer looking dog door, a dog house/tent that can be used indoors and outdoors (camping trips, yo...)
Please no we dont need more dlc for dlc, we already have my first pet stuff
@@scurbbb My response merely reflects lilsimsie's. I pitched the idea that *IF* EA were to try to do anything with cats and/or dogs again, it would be best as a *kit*. As it goes, kits are very niche. All the more, they would do better to also bring in an actual Simmer (who is really into animals) to collab on it. Yeah, we have the unfortunate Stuff pack - and boy a lot of the things in it are gaudy. 🤦

23:20 It is probably unintentional, but if it is, then it's because a full oven surface is very unstable while a countertop stove like an electric stove is flatter and smooth, which allows for chopping and prepping

Oh yeah, I live in a big "village" and the neighboring teeny tiny city (literal 20 minute drive, you would probably see them as the same place but if you said that to a local you'd get jumped, especially by the teens) there's no real hate or bullying between them but it's like a slight ick if you're from the neighboring place.

10:57 so true! I’m from Newcastle (UK) and we have so much beef with the city on the other side of the river, Sunderland. Like you say, it’s mainly a sports rivalry thing (mainly football) but it’s funny how even people not interested in sports also inherently have the same beef between the cities. That being said, I think we can put rivalry aside when needed, like if there was a big charity fundraiser or if there was some sort of tragedy involving one of the cities, I think we look out for each other when needed.
Since both Newcastle and Sunderland are in the north east of England, we have very strong accents (I guess we’re closer to sounding Scottish since we’re closer to Scotland than London…but still very different accents) People from Newcastle are called Geordies, and people from Sunderland are called Mackems and despite being close by each other, you can hear the difference in the accents. Also if you mistake/call a Geordie a Mackem (or vice versa) it’s probably the greatest insult you can make 😂.
It’s funny how “tribe mentality” and “tribe rivalry” seems to be part of the human experience, wherever in the world you live.
You really need to see farm houses because our country is a real farmhouse country or a windmill
The thing about the close cities disliking each other makes me think of Dallas and Fort Worth. Literally at lunch today, I used the phrase "more Dallas and less Fort Worth" to explain why something was undesirable 😂 (I'm not from either city, but Dallas catches a lot of flak from the rest of Texas for being, essentially, Oklahoma lite)
