    I find these (or similar) drum synth modules sound best, when you don’t try to make a drum pattern that sounds like a drum pattern. More like ”random sequences with the snare in the wrong place but the whole thing fills the spectrum nicely”... as long as there is one sound which plays a pattern relatively easy to follow, the human brain can make sense of all of it. But regular drum patterns... ? It will always sound like a Roland demo from the 80’s :-)

      Totally agree with this. One of the biggest strengths of modular is irregular programming and just how interesting it can be.

      c cheshire Exactly what I was going to post - unconventional forms of CV/gate control is what makes modular worth it. I understand why more standard sequencers have been offered the last few years, but I fear it’s somewhat regressive to having people buy/setup elaborate x0x type patches instead of learning more about how the patching works / clever ways of getting more interesting music. That’s half the fun of the wires!

      definitely right- the fun of modular drums is unique sound design tool. I like WMD percussion modules like Fracture and Chimera because you can get many non percussion sounds like smashed windows and gunshots besides drum beats.

    I’m pretty sure the drum sequencer has headers on the back to directly connect to the drum modules. The Erica Techno system uses this extensively so you can play without having to patch everything

    Alessandro Cortini has somewhat shown years ago with the Sonoio albums that modular drums can be cool. One of the keys to his sound was the use of distortion on all the drum tracks (Decapitator he mentioned on Sonicstate, but the mixer of the buchla also has some headroom issues that creates some pleasing sounds).

      If this is the first video if his you've seen, I highly recommend going through his library and watching as many as you can. The guy is pretty much everything I strive to be.
      You should also find the three hour video where he scores an entire show soundtrack with a chamber orchestra. I watch that from time to time because it's just amazing. It's not on his channel though so you'll just need to search the UA-cams.

And it's not unique in a way that feels forced or goofy just for the sake of bring different, rather you can tell the style and format of the videos are genuine and natural. I went in the total opposite direction for drum sequencing in my euro. I feel I already had so many XOX styled drum machines the last thing I wanted was another traditional method to sequence.
    I use a pithoprakta, lots of logic, knights gallop, four bricks rook, zularic repetitior all driven by a tempi. I can do purely generative, I can play in rhythms, or I can use look up table of patterns euclidean or otherwise, or any combination of the above modulated and logic'd to the nines.
    Its been a hugely liberating way to program drums.

    • @thedrumunkey
      @thedrumunkey 4 роки тому

      Soooo I don’t do the modular thing, aaaand I’m a drummer... but what I’ve been working on is to use a series of delays with various beat synced times (a 1 beat delay with high feedback into a 4 beat delay with high feedback, then kill 1 beat delay and let longer delay become basically the “sequencer”)
      Can’t you use a delay module to delay your trigger signals as well? So you can get cool grooves off the grid? Or do modular delays not work with trigger/gate signals?

    • @sookcyber2174
      @sookcyber2174 4 роки тому

      @@thedrumunkey as long as the delay is DC coupled you could delay a trigger, though tbh anything with a sharp transient/leading edge you could use as a trigger. So in short yes you could

    so, I've been having a LOT of luck giving up a bunch of control to my modular system.
    for example, just kind of patching, not "randomly" at all but more "what if I did this" and not planning to accomplish something specific
    If I like it, I keep the cable where it is
    If not, adjust knobs to see if I can find a sweet spot
    If still worse than when I started, just unplug and back up
    In particular with logic modules, clocks, LFOs, gate patterns - I stopped thinking so much and just started patching and listening
    Works amazingly well to create crazy intricate hi hat patterns, and that's often all I need if I have a steady kick and snare

    Maybe you could write to a theme for the album; each track written thinking of a chapter of a favourite book or different characters or something similar. You're used to writing for film so setting yourself similar limitations and boundaries might help to make choices when possibilities can seem endless

    ''How much did this cost?''
    ''Another synthesizer? Whats wrong with the ones you have already?''

  • @CinematicLaboratory
    @CinematicLaboratory 4 роки тому +2

    Auch, spending a lot of money to get a modular 909 doesn't make sense even though I love the Techno System. The DFAM does, because it's creamy analog. Two DFAMS makes double sense. But in the end you'll need some Noise Engineering stuff or a Pulsar 23 to get to the 21st century. Grids also works. And a Metron with a few Voltera's. I know it's easy to write this down after you filled your case. But it's a long journey with lots of detours and dead ends - and you always know what the right decision would have been - in retrospective...

    It’s not modular, but in my opinion the single best drum/Perc synth is the Nord drum. Nord drum 2 has trigger/pad inputs, so you should be able to shove in varying signal levels to simulate velocity. I’ve hooked up 6 digital metronomes and messed with the volume and it responds...

    Magic Trackpad 2

    Modular drums are just different than classic drum machines and samplers. I think modular drums have the advantage of cv modulation. I really don't want my Iteritas modules sounding like my MPC Live, Toraiz, Octatrack or OP-1. You can only stretch an Amen snare but so far because the organic personality is locked in through the aspect of the sample, whereas a synth perc module like the Basimilus can mangle and twist from a snare into a bassline, kick or some strange bell of a high hat with changes in timbre and and envelope. The tool changes in the right hands.

I understand this is probably just for the video, but what does your actual workflow look like? Writing a book is actually quiet easy, figuring out how to write a book is the crux... the same stands for an album ?

    I find the idea of modular drums to be just a bit too much money for not enough performance. I'd rather buy a drum machine with separate outs than reinvent the wheel to make a separate module for every sound. It's just not the strong point of modular.

      The variety of drum modules is sparse. They aren't all single tones - you can buy fullly programmable drum modules that have an array of outs and ins. I see you point but the idea of modular is that its adaptable to anyone.

      @@okidot Well, that's my point. Unless you're modulating various aspects of each drum module, it's a very expensive prospect for just drums.

      @@fakshen1973 Yes another key word for modular is EXPENSIVE hahaha! You can basically get fully routed drum machines though, so there is some more comparatively affordable options. But yeah building a custom kit with separate modules is $$$

    That's an insane amount of work to program rather mediocre drums. That sequencer is overpriced IMO. NerdSeq looks better

    Your problem is you told everyone you were making an album. Any professional writer will tell you nothing motivates them like a deadline. Maybe you need(ed) an actual music production job. Otherwise have fun.

    Meh, I use sample banks with a Hardware sampler and FX . Way less pricey and the sonic possibilities are infinite.
