Please be aware that Sandisk has had a recent ( year+ ) batch of bad flash storage -- resulting in data loss. Do a search for 'sandisk data loss' for more details. I highly recommend not using them for anything you care about. ( astro data included ) Hope you get some clear skies soon!

Oh no! I didn’t know that! Thank you for the great tip. I’m going to pin this comment in case anyone else considers this route too. Clear skies!

Many thanks for doing a great video 😀. My only observation was that I tried imaging a target very near Polaris and my guiding (with ASIAIR Plus) said there was not enough movement in the stars. Your advice is spot on in that your guide scope should be relatively well aligned with your main scope with the exception of any targets near Polaris where I would try setting the guide scope a few degrees off the main scope. Keep the great videos coming 👍

This is a great reminder for me to check up on all these points. Thanks!

Good tips but the one about leveling is deceptive. Once a mount is polar aligned the leveling has no effect. The axis of rotation is not dependent on whether the tripod and head are level. Where is does matter is getting to polar alignment, like any alt az adjustment being level keeps vertical adjustment only vertical (alt) and horizontal only horizontal (az).

Thanks for the tips. Very helpful. One negative comment though - the background music doesn't add anything. In fact it can make it a bit hard to hear you clearly.

    lol tip #1 😊
But if your counterweight in the 2 axis are good, should allow for some extra weight?
The system does not really have inertia… mass vs weight principle…

I hate to be the one to say it, but your imaging setup is so messed up. Certainly there is lots of room for improvement there.

Are you referring to the scope setup for planetary that I point to? Always open to pointers and tips if you have some

@@thatastrochap Your cable management has a lot of room for improvements. Wobbling cables in the wind affects guiding.

@@jorggroe-kracht391 ah yes! Completely agree - I’ve just this weekend done a big cleanup of cables and fasted everything down 👍🏻

I'm pretty new to the whole astrophotography game so I'm still getting my kit built out and learning very basic things. I was baffled by whatever space-age polar alignment you had going on until I looked it up and found out there were cameras for polar alignment. I've gotten used to the polar alignment scope in my mount and can align pretty well in roughly 5 minutes after the mount is set up, but man this would take so much guesswork out of it! Always learning, and clear skies!

I use the ZWO ASI Air to control everything relating to my imaging sessions. That has a built in tool for performing polar alignment which utilises your main scope + camera to ensure pinpoint accuracy. You basically follow the steps in the app, making small adjustments to the mount until you get it as accurate as you can. It’s a real game changer and avoids the need to buy an extra camera or otherwise. That said I have no doubt an independent polar alignment cam would work very well too!
Good luck with your Astro journey! Clear skies

What about guide scope FL? Should the guide scope be 25% of the main scope focal length for example? Or doesn't that matter for guiding?

    • @thatastrochap
      @thatastrochap  5 місяців тому

Great point - guide scope FL is definitely an important factor that I don’t cover in the video. I’m sure there are many other elements I don’t touch on here too. My primary intention was to cover the key areas that people often rush, overlook or don’t know about.
In general I think the rule of thumb is it should be a minimum of 25% of the main telescopes FL. For instance, if you use off axis guiding it would be 100% which would work just fine, the key aspect is that it shouldn’t be too small relative to the main scope.
