Fantastic video, and shines a spotlight on the dedication of the fabulous volunteers. So important to preserve our heritage. Lovely to see Mike’s passion for the railway. Perhaps….. work on the pronunciation of the name 😉 Thank you all involved.
I adore this railway, such a beautiful place to visit, I’ve been visiting for 39 years and will continue to do so, I love the railway, I’d of thought there’d of been a mention to the fact that Rev W.Awdry who wrote the original Thomas books used to run the railway. Another beautiful railway local to this is the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railway, equally as beautiful
I am a petrol engine type person, a big v8 just sounds perfect, however there is something so so special about steam engines. I think they have a soul.
As a US citizen, I grew up in the 90’s and early 2000’s reading the Thomas book written by Rev. W. Audrey, and seeing the show narrated by George Carlin and Ringo Starr. Someday I’ll visit this railway when I get the chance. It’s beautiful.
Man, I could've watched hours of this. Talking about the maintenance, the track itself, the start up, the design of the little engine, the logistics of narrow gauge rail, the coal, and mechanisms, the signaling, the track movers, all of it. More please
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels has a few videos at the Tallylyn where he reviews several of their locomotive, going through the whole prep and driving the line.
I completely agree with Mike's analysis on kids' TV. I was obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid and as such I have an interest in steam engines. Kids nowadays do not have the same outlets or influences. Its a real shame
All because of most kid shows (especially Pre-School for some reason) being all the same, only with different gimmicks, and standardized to the same abused format. (Can anyone explain why such measures were put in place?)
@@garrettsmith2776 because the slightest change is always too radical and they should go "softer" on kids because don't let kids feel any emotions other than happy!
Really enjoyed this. Often I find Mike's presenting a little too saccharin and sychophantic, but in this case the passion felt very genuine. And I do enjoy a heritage railway...
I was a little skeptical when this channel changed (though not really cause I think anything the Top Gear trio are involved in is great), and I'm loving all of the new, and very different content that's come out. Great video Mike!
True history in motion. Steam was Britain's gift to the world. We lit the fires of industry and began a revolution. To this day incredibly dedicated and talented people give up their time as volunteers to keep that flame alive over 300 years later. I wish I could buy a pint for every single one of you. The incredible few with steam in their veins and a fire in their hearts.
Never thought I would see this channel talk talyllyn, amazing. Also the feeling of being in an episode isn't far off as this railway inspired the Skarloey railway in the books and show. Even more interesting, the history of the line influenced the stories of the Skarloey. Fantastic video
I agree with the sentiment, but after Mike met the lovely chap with the steam engine swapped Range Rover I believe it was, you could see his love of steam (as all of us engineering sods have).
Having operated a steam engine, the thing people don't realize is just how delicate the throttle truly is. There is a fine line between "we got it moving" and "we spun the drivers" which is BAD. That said, once you get a feel for it, the engine legitimately talks to you. You learn how to listen to what it is telling you and how to react. Also, due to the extremely low rolling resistance of the rails, you only need a light touch to get going and on flat ground, it will coast for a long distance. Mike did an incredible job operating, he really has a knack for operating the engine and did an incredible job of presenting too. Proper job all around!
Well, it finally happened, another crossover we never knew we wanted: "It's the countryside that really gets me fired up" later that day.. "James your train's on fire" "Is it!" looks back "Oh PAH! " "Well, there you are" Would love to see Hammond and/or May visiting the different railways. imagine Hammond on a gravity train!! "Trucks and broken slate lay everywhere. luckily no one was hurt - except Hammond, who laid bruised and bemused, with only his laughing colleagues for company!"
Brilliantly filmed. I like how the double-acting cylinders on Steam Locos was explained as that’s a key part always missed in the basic explanations of steam engines.
I helped out in the engine sheds for 2 week about 16+ years ago and loved it. The loco you where on "Tom Rolt" was actually built at the Talyllyn Railway and entered service in 1991.
There was always something magical about this little railway, not least in the inspiration it gave to preserving heritage railways around the world. I can think of few things nicer than a trip on the line, experiencing the sounds, the sights, the smells of the steam train puffing happily up the beautiful Talyllyn Valley with smiling passengers enjoying the trip.
This was an absolutely brilliant video! I loved every second of it. Learning how the steam engine works, learning what the people do there, and seeing both the beautiful scenery and train made it a perfect video!
Here in Colorado we have a narrow gauge rail line from Durango to Silverton, every summer as a kid when we went to our land in Durango I would haunt the station and take the train back and forth at least once every summer trip. Once I grew up, I took the Amtrak across country several times over the years and have never tired of it. Something magical and "old timey" about being on a train, it's slow enough that you can see the world around you passing by, and the journey becomes an actual part of the trip, unlike with planes or cars. I've met some great people on the trains, it's a different breed of folk who prefer that mode of travel.
I enjoyed the video. Very well done. As the daughter of a locomotive engineer, I grew up around them. I love the sound of a train going by and the horn. Thanks again for a great video.
This video honestly put a smile on my face and I’m with you all the way on the Thomas CGI front. Even though I’m a child of the naughties, I grew up on 90’s Thomas VHS tapes. The Hornby man cave needs to happen!
I have been at the Talylynn railway twice. Definitely subscribed to the email newsletter. Even for non-train enthusiasts, this railway is great. And the sandwiches they sell at the uphill station are the **best** ones I had in my UK trip, both times
Thankyou. I lost dad a year ago today and he loves steam engines with a passion and i felt this just brought him a little closer to him 😢 for that i thankyou ❤️ love you dad
My grandson is 8 years old and he loves Thomas and has a passion for trains. I'd certainly love to take him for a ride on this train, he'd be so happy! :-)
Grew up here and as kids joined the preservation society and would occasionally use the train for fun to go home from school. In the summer holidays it provided a fantastic means of exploring the hills and surrounding countryside around the stations inland. Great to see it online👍
I've loved Narrow guage and minimum guage railways since I rode the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway back when I was a kid. Seeing all the genuine happiness and excitement here is great to see.
I used to work on a heritage railway here in the States called Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad from Autumn 2016 to Winter 2017. Had a lot of fun. We had three steam engines, one of which was behind glass while waiting for repairs. Sadly, Mt. Rainier Scenic closed in 2020 until further notice due to financial losses caused by the pandemic. The last train ran on Christmas Day 2019.
Went back there recently for the first time in about 15 years and brought all the memories back! This place is also the birth place of the original Thomas stories, all of their engines are in the original books. The engine you were playing with is Ivo Hughs in the books
The Talyllyn is one of very few places that makes me happy these days. I try and visit atleast a couple of times a year and everytime it just puts a big smile on my face.
Man what an epic video. I was never into trains myself but now I'm feeling a real love for steam locomotives. Beautifully made, amazing landscapes, and Mike's passion is ever contagious. Keep up the great work!
More steam content please. Much more steam content. And model railways with James May. I'll be a very happy viewer with more railway related content with either models or steam.
Beautiful video guys, I absolutely love heritage railways. I grew up watching the old Thomas episodes from the 80s and 90s as a kid growing up in the 2000s, i have had a love for steam engines since I was little. This video absolutely made me smile and was the best part of my day, cheers.
In my younger more reckless days I came across this railway in my old Fiat. The train was coming and for half a second I thought about recreating the fast and furious. Really glad I backed out of that one, fantastic piece of history!
Heck yes, thomas the tank engine! I think he was my favorite, but percy also holds a place in my heart. I love you, mike, this was the most wholesome, lovely video i’ve seen in a while. Thanks, guys! 🥰
Finally, a video from "I'm Mike" that can be enjoyed rather than endured. Nicely done! (And I just gotta say it: Not a single mention of James' Gin, and not even a plea - grudging, ironical, or otherwise - to "Like, comment, subscribe", so ... *YAY* for that!!)
The genuine passion he has for this really comes across, and all in all it really makes this feel like one of the mini-documentaries the trio has done on various topics over the years.
Beautiful video! Brought a tear to my eye as my late uncle who was a full blown train man would have really enjoyed watching this. Love all the content you guys pump out ❤️
My childhood consisted of everything Thomas the tank. Nothing else peaked my interest. And even now I still love steam trains. They’re different from every other mode of transport to me, they’re so special. ❤️ great vid, very jealous
I throughly enjoyed this video! The volunteers of the railway seem to have a passion for preserving this! The whole production crew did an amazing job on this video! Glad you were given a chance to present this one Mike! Definitely something to remember 🚂! I look forward to your other content ☺️!

This is actually pleasant to watch. I'm loving What Next's new format. I really hope this channel gets big so we can get some great content. What Next? Jet fighters, MotoGP, F1, boats, traveling, cars, food, humor, etc. Just a bunch of interesting random things.
A wonderful video into the past and down memory lane for you Mike. The sheer wonder of your experience is clear to see and pure joy was infectious as you rode on the footplate. I do agree with you that Thomas the Tank Engine has lost something going to CGI. Which is a shame.

Great video, soon a heritage steam railway, The Zig Zag, in Lithgow NSW Australia will be reopened after a massive volunteer effort after years of closure from maintenance issues, bushfire damage & the pandemic, I can't wait 🚂
I just love what the top gear people have "grown up" to. And I also love this railway. I usually like it when stuff is grimy and looks well used. But that level of preservation is just something else.

Thanks for preserving this system. Thanks for sharing it with the world. 👍👍👍

@Danny Gti he really didn't used to run the railway at all...
visited the railway back in 2017 after reading railway adventure. we got to travel behind the old lady herself
I would happily watch a series of the team visiting all the different heritage railways in the UK.
Same here
Thirdth this comment.
YES !
So would I! ❤️
This!
I can see James May smiling like a proud dad as Mike is explaining how a steam engine works! 😂❤️
I think he'd be quibbling it in some way
James : Well, he's wrong actually..but yeah ok fine
I am a petrol engine type person, a big v8 just sounds perfect, however there is something so so special about steam engines. I think they have a soul.
I’m a Thomas the tank engine fan so seeing the Skarloey Railway engines (Skarloey, Rheneas, Peter Sam) is just phenomenal

I love how mike is just grinning the whole time he's on the train. Dude's just living out a boyhood dream.
As someone who grew up with both Thomas and Top Gear, this is the most “worlds colliding” moment ever🙂
"The little railway in the hills" "The railway with a heart of Gold" got the love the Talyllyn Railway!
Man, I could've watched hours of this. Talking about the maintenance, the track itself, the start up, the design of the little engine, the logistics of narrow gauge rail, the coal, and mechanisms, the signaling, the track movers, all of it. More please

The Talyllyn Railway have their own UA-cam channel were they talk exactly about that.

This video is literally blending my two favorite hobbies. How could it get better than this
OK... season over ... what's next
Having James may and Richard Hammond come in and explain stuff
Ringo Starr narrating?
lol literally blending...

Wondering if *Tom Rolt* is a (half) sister to *Lyd* on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways?
Gotta give it to Mike, cameraman, video editor, sound editor and all who participated, this is such a joy to watch!
We need James May: Our Man in a Steam Locomotive series.
Love the fact that Fireman Andrew saw S13/1 and was able to call BS on Clarkson.
Did anyone actually think he shoveled coal for more than a few minutes at a time?
Wonderful scenery and footage. Thumbs up to the whole production team.

There’s nothing like the sound of a steam engine under load. If you’re a real man… that sound puts a smile on your face.

Very high quality production. Mike has become a great story teller.
Despite acknowledging Thomas in the beginning he never realized he was on the Skarloey Railway.
I volunteer at many different heritage railways and miniature railways, mainly around Cheshire and Staffordshire and I've loved every moment of it
What Next? More steam engines. More trains and historic railways. This is one of the best things that DriveTribe has produced, ever.

Great video Mike and beautifully photographed. I bet you loved every second of it!
What a great video. Brought back happy memories of my own visit to the line.
I also grew up loving TTE and this totally speaks to me. Little green is a beautiful and useful engine!

This was an absolute joy to watch! My steam engine loving heart is whirring gleefully, thank you!
Same as Mike, I really love trains because of the Thomas the Tank engine. loved the practical use of tiny toy trains.
In my younger more reckless days I came across this railway in my old Fiat. The train was coming and for half a second I thought about recreating the fast and furious. Really glad I backed out of that one, fantastic piece of history!

Not a single mention of James' Gin, and not even a plea - grudging, ironical, or otherwise - to "Like, comment, subscribe", so ... *YAY* for that!!)
I think I could watch Mike explain the intricacies of eating a Ham sandwich and I'd love it. I love how excited he gets for everything.
The genuine passion he has for this really comes across, and all in all it really makes this feel like one of the mini-documentaries the trio has done on various topics over the years.

This was your best episode yet.
My childhood consisted of everything Thomas the tank. Nothing else peaked my interest. And even now I still love steam trains. They’re different from every other mode of transport to me, they’re so special. ❤️ great vid, very jealous
You guys just get it. Content like this helps fill the void that TG left, Thank you.
I throughly enjoyed this video! The volunteers of the railway seem to have a passion for preserving this!
The whole production crew did an amazing job on this video! Glad you were given a chance to present this one Mike! Definitely something to remember 🚂!
I look forward to your other content ☺️!
I like trains
I like planes
Planes Trains and Automobiles
I like turtles
The talyllyn is an amazing place, the setting, the locos, the passion, its amazing, and I can tell, not having been there myself.
A lot of people make very flashy videos about steam engines. This is the perfect calmness that still shows the beauty of the railway. I've been dying to go to the Talyllyn and hopefully can next year!
This was the most relaxing video I watched from you guys. The scences with the train chuffing along the country side are awesome. Thanks for this lovely video :)
Outstanding Mike. I’m glad I found this channel
The qualitiy of you videos are just mindblowing
Wonderful film Mike - These baby trains are great , but might I point out that the main line steam engines were a very different story , my father spent 40+ years with British rail as a Fireman shovelling between 5 and 8 tons of coal into these monsters every day of his Woking life until the retirement of Steam in the late 60s. Definitely something to remember, past the tinted nostalgia.
I'm guessing the black lung risk would be comparable to coal miners. As in, do the job long enough, you will get it. (I live in KY....)
@@sqmotorsports9230 I would imagine a lot less, since you're not in an enclosed space, and there's always a lot of air coming into and around the cab.
Superb, loving the variety you're bringing here.
Wow.. I never thought I would like a episode of Steam engines this much.. Really loved it
What a lovely heritage railway. I will have to visit. Great video , thank-you for showing us this 😀
Such an incredible video Mike & team. Really enjoyed it.
This might not get high number of views but tell u what the people who watched it .
U have earned their hearts ♥️ .
I know this probably won't get read, but I am going to post it anyway.
I find it funny you bring up Thomas throughout this video, because this is LITERALLY the inspiration of the Skarloey Railway in Thomas and Friends.

Finally, if you enjoy this video, I highly recommend going to the railway.
The scenery is breathtaking, and it truly is a magically place.
There is a section in the museum dedicated to Thomas the Tank Engine.

I was HUGE into trains as a lad, this made me unbelievably giddy.
Wow, driving the "Tom Rolt"… lucky boy! He was an important man in the story of 'industrial archaeology'.
Very well done. Trains aren't my thing (even though I did watch Thomas as a kid), but the edit on this video made it very enjoyable to watch. Mike's enthusiasm along with the music really gave me a feel for the workmanship and passion put into this place.
Absolutely fell in love with this place many years ago.
Excelent story, excelent work to cover it and how deep the reporter goes into the shops. Amazing 👍
I love how surprising the videos are. I didn't expect this. Really awesome
Have been regularly visiting Talyllyn since I was 5 …. That’s over 40 years … one day I’ll get to some volunteering.
Great video, soon a heritage steam railway, The Zig Zag, in Lithgow NSW Australia will be reopened after a massive volunteer effort after years of closure from maintenance issues, bushfire damage & the pandemic, I can't wait 🚂
I really dont know what to say other then , THANK YOU sooooo much for making this video and i hope you guys have had alot of fun.
That was awesome. Thanks Mike & team!
I just love what the top gear people have "grown up" to. And I also love this railway. I usually like it when stuff is grimy and looks well used. But that level of preservation is just something else.
