    I live in Portugal and now I understand why some English customers ask me to place the electrical panel inside a cupboard! Here our technical rules do not allow it, they have to normally be located at the entrance to the house. I really enjoy watching your videos and understanding what your electrical installations are like.

    @14:08, the longer the cable, the more capacitive it is. By applying high test voltage to the cable from the hand held test equipment, this capacitance in the cable is charging up. When a capacitor is discharged, it effectively is a short circuit and will draw the maximum current the test equipment can source. This is why the insulation reading is low. As this capacitance of the cable charges up, it draw less current which means the insulation reading on the test equipment increases over time.

    • @crowderglen
      @crowderglen Рік тому +1

      Oh yes, this is why you should always use an electrician for jobs like this. They know the rules!

    • @IsActulyDolan
      @IsActulyDolan Рік тому

      That’s interesting, why would that have the added effect of collecting a charge faster the second time round as Lee eluded to?

    • @crowderglen
      @crowderglen Рік тому +2

      This capacitance hasn't had time to self discharge by the time he performs the second test. Would be interesting to see if the conductors are temporarily shorted together before the start of the second test.

    Thorough inspection here the way it should be done! Clearly the customer opted to pay the right price for a full and in depth inspection of the installation only after realising the mess they have gotten themselves into by allowing "Builders" to operate as "electricians"🤭

    These aren't that bad, we had some "builder" in and had no end of problems after they left. One the leccy side we had an LED light stripe to a bathroom cabinet. The subsequent electrician who sorted out the mess found that they ran a power cable to the back of the unit and then wrapped the live and neutral around the 3 pin socket for the light stripe and "secured" it with electrical tape.... The plumbing was just as fun as we ended up with an unvented system with 2 of the 3 fail safes installed incorrectly and a pump on the system for the shower.... Joy....

    Any electricians in the comments, I have been wondering when people are trying to trace circuits, is there any reason you cant just shove a somethings like a telco tonner on and go around with the wand. Any mysterious circuits, plug that on and go around and you may be able to locate it, I am not sure if it works like this with home electrics too, but a good earth helps you tone it really well and given if you are tracing it from the consumer unit theres a earth block right there

    • @electrickery
      @electrickery Рік тому

      You can and I've done it - but you have to be dead certain that the cable is fully isolated to connect the tone generator. If they're buried deep in a wall sometimes the tracer won't find it. It's also tricky to use them when cables are close together - sometimes the cable you're testing will couple onto another. It is a usable trick but it's not a silver bullet.
      The CAT and TOMKAT type outside tracers (used with a suitable tone generator eg a Genny) are well worth having for tracking buried outside cables, I had to track down a bunch of outside lighting cables to replace them - and after that job I wouldn't be without mine.

    Would 63 downlights be too much on a radial 1.5mm circuit? Is there a limit?
    I’ve wondered this for a while because an LED GU10 is maybe 6w.
    So 63 x 6 = 378w draw

    • @Riggersa
      @Riggersa Рік тому

      Nah, that would only pull 1.6 amps and I doubt the rest of the lighting circuit would be pulling 4 Amps so it will be absolutely fine, could get away with 1mm
