  • WW2 Panzer IV Ausf.G - H footage - Panzerkampfwagen IV. pt5.
The Panzerkampfwagen IV was designed as the Versuchs-Kraftfahrzeug 622 in 1934 and went into production in 1937, and would fit the the short barrel 75 mm gun, and this would stay the same for the Ausf. A to F.
It would be a a support tank to be used to handle anti-tank guns and fortifications, it would work alongside the more numerable Panzer III in Panzer Divisions, but would changes it's roll in the later part of the war.
The Panzer IV Ausf.A production started in 1937 and ended in June 1938, it was similar to the B.W.I Prototype and production would stop after 35 vehicles had been completed, the Ausf.B went into production 1938 which had several changes to the A, with more frontal armour without a ball mount for the MG-34 machine gun, a new 300hp Maybach HL-120TR engine, transmission, single-piece hatches and commander’s cupola.
The A and B almost didn't have any external differences and it only had a improved modified engine, engine mounts, new turret ring and armored sleeve mount around the machine gun barrel.
The Ausf.D had numerous changes made to the front hull armour, and looked more like the Ausf.A, the ball mounted MG-34 machine gun was reintroduced and the driver’s front was fitted forwards again.
The Ausf.F or F1, first called the F at an early stage, was the last of the Panzer IV that fitted the short 75 mm gun, it would again see changes in it's suspension, with larger track links, with new idler wheels and front drive sprockets to reduce ground pressure, this was done because of the new additional armour increase.
The Ausf.F2 or the early Ausf.G started it's production in February 1942, after development started in 1941 to mount the Pak 38 L/60 into the turret of the Panzer IV, and a prototype was ready in November, but with new Russian tanks like KV-1s and T-34s, the 38 was dropped in favor of the new Pak 40 L/46 and a new gun was produced, the KwK 40 L/43 was fitted with a muzzle-brake and the first prototype was ready in 1942.
But in June 1942, the F2 was renamed Ausf.G, and this would pretty much make every long barreled Panzer IV, the Ausf.G.
The Ausf.G had numerous changes, like the elimination of the turret vision ports, the cupola was up-armored and modified, additional racks and brackets for spare road wheels and track links were added, the engine ventilation was improved. and some changes made to the armour, with an additional 30 mm to the frontal-glacis and changes to the armour to make the tank lighter, but it wasn't enough for the limited capacity of the chassis and transmission.
The late production introduced in March-April 1943, had the new side skirt armor fitted (Schürzen) to the sides and turret, and would also receive the new KwK 40 L/48, and smoke grenade launchers to the side of the turret.
From 1942 until 1943 1275 early Ausf.G tanks were produced and 412 later types.
The Ausf.H had the biggest production of the all, with a total of 3774 produced by June of 1944.
big changes made to the H were the new KwK 40 L/48, which the Late G already had, and the removal of the hull side vision ports, with factory-mounted Side and turret spaced armor (Schürzen) and Zimmerit paste. ( watch my Zimmerit video for more on Zimmerit. Video here • Zimmerit on Tanks - Wh... ),
new air filters were fitted, along with a modified cupola, with turret anti-aircraft mount for an extra MG 34.

When I see footage like this the first thing that comes to mind is I wonder how many of those young men on all sides actually survived the war. They all had families, the scale of loss of life is simply staggering...

Great videos. Question - the curious little fender support bracket on the front right hull supporting the right fender (just in front of bow MG) seems to have emerged on Ausf.F2 version. Why was this added at that point? Was it part of the schurzen support? Why was one not added to the driver side? Haven't been able to find any reference books describing the reason for that addition, but I know there must be a reason.

Again a very interesting footage. Among those mixed footage there was a scene showing a panzer unit climbing around the curves on the road between Rome to Nettuno in Italy but altrough I was living in that area I never understood precisely what road it was and despite asking local old people they didn't remember it, a shame...
It might be of interest that I did found other roads like from Aprilia train station in which the Panthers "jumped" off on the road to Nettuno and the other station in Cisterna trying to reach Nettuno. It is intresting to know that around that ugly town, completely destroyed by the battleships, there is still brig craters done by 16" shells. I am very glad that I wasn't there during the war...

At 6:18 I see the driver operating the vehicle with his head above the hatch, I did not know that any Panzer IV variant had a raisable driver seat. Late model Tiger IIs and Panthers did but I have never before seen a moving Panzer IV with the drivers head out of the hatch. Maintenance clips are great, particularly the transmission and engine replacement. Interesting! Great video many thanks for posting.

You are right, strange I didn't noticed before! In truth driving in the narrow Italian road seeing only trough the narrow armored glass is not the best! Several of the captured T-34 tanks were modified as Bergepanzer, and served on several fronts, one T-34 Bergepanzer was captured in Normandy and ended up at the Saumur Tank museum after the war.

I like how it looks like a Tiger with the spaced armor.
Got a lot of enemy tankers confused, especially on the US side.

    • @PanzerInsight

Soldiers had a lot of trouble Identifying vehicles, that's also a reason why eyewitness acounts can't really be trusted upon when it says something about a type of tank. And upgrading the Panzer IV didn't work the Germans tried to give it a bigger gun and sloped armour but it didn't work.

... I'm not sure but I think that this tank was the one that received the most improvements and adaptations in general (chassis, engine and traction, armor and weaponry) hence the many versions the Panzer lV ... GG

You are correct sir. The Panzer IV served the longest(1940 right up to the end of war, 1945), and had the most units produced of any German tank.

Have to ask... I'm a big fan of ww2 equipment. From tanks to helmets and everything in between. I lean towards german equipment but since learning the true advantages and disadvantages of all the different models... if .. and thats a big if.. the germans had maintained anything close to let's say 50% of air power, couldthe allies compete with the german tanks??? I know the ruskies had an excellent t-34-85 however the germans did start to produce the king tiger... the Sherman for all intent and purposes couldn't even deal with the panzer iv.. the firefly could if took the 1st shot off and was accurate could kill but couldn't take a hit.. glass jaw if u will.. any more knowledgeable people then me... I would love to read your thoughts.. thanks and thanks for video
    Peace n stay safe

The Sherman had many different variants that could easily match the German tanks and were superior to the Panzer IV, and that's probably the interesting part of the Sherman, it was so up-gradable design that it could have so much of all sort of variants, armour wasn't as bad as people think, it mostly took several hits to knock out a Sherman, (just look up some older picture, many had several hit's, of course because the Germans wanted to set the tank on fire, not only the confirm the kill but also because they knew it would get recovered and repaired) the Jumbo had even more armour then the Tiger, It also had the 75 and was upgraded to higher standard.

Ok.. ty will look up more on the Sherman. Everything I understood about Sherman.. she was a tin can. Had an uncle(5'1) willie in 3rd.. he would say he loved the shermans.. but they were junk. So idk. But thank pnz great channel n man has it grown. Love ur tiger shirts as well

You're welcome and that's pretty much were it came from, the Sherman had a high survival rate when hit and so many crew could complain about the tank after the thing went up in smoke.
