- The Panzerkampfwagen IV was designed as the Versuchs-Kraftfahrzeug 622 in 1934 and went into production in 1937, and would fit the the short barrel 75 mm gun, and this would stay the same for the Ausf. A to F.
It would be a a support tank to be used to handle anti-tank guns and fortifications, it would work alongside the more numerable Panzer III in Panzer Divisions, but would changes it's roll in the later part of the war.
The Panzer IV Ausf.A production started in 1937 and ended in June 1938, it was similar to the B.W.I Prototype and production would stop after 35 vehicles had been completed, the Ausf.B went into production 1938 which had several changes to the A, with more frontal armour without a ball mount for the MG-34 machine gun, a new 300hp Maybach HL-120TR engine, transmission, single-piece hatches and commander’s cupola.
The Panzer IV Ausf.C production started in 1938 and would end in 1939 with 134 produced.
The A and B almost didn't have any external differences and it only had a improved modified engine, engine mounts, new turret ring and armored sleeve mount around the machine gun barrel.

And later the F2 fitted with a 7.5cm pak 40 which we will see on later panzer 4 models of its type.
@@haomaruinuki8935 The F2 model (and some very early G models) used the 75mm. L.43 KwK.38, not the 75mm. L.46 PaK.40. From G model onwards (with the exception of the K model), used the 75mm. L.48 KwK.39 gun. The K model used the 50mm. L.60 KwK.39 gun.

The D model introduced an external gun mantlet, an extra piece of armor stepped out from the point that gun protrudes from the turret. So A, B, and C can be recognized by the absence of the mantlet.
Correct and also the Sherman had it too and later installed extended mantlet and the Russian tanks as well. Only the Brits almost never installed it...
THE A, B & C models also have the roof hatch, in front of the cupola, for the use with the range finding binocular periscope. The D model & onwards didn't have this hatch.
A very interesting footage of the Pz.Kwg IV from Ausf. A to Ausf.C! It must be said that those tanks in the original role with it's 7.5 cm KaK 40 (L/43) was quite successful as a support for the troops but already there was pressure to install a more powerful cannon during the Blitzkrieg but it became urgent during the war in Africa. In pratice the authorities really dragged their feet only until the first weeks of Operation Barbarossa when they started to encounter the first mass of T-34 and KV-1 and found out those tanks were almost impervious to their puny guns but very often superior tatics and good use of the famous 88 Flak guns saved the situation. The beauty of all was that there was already some guns that could easily put in production! I don't know if it is true but I read somewhere it was because the authorities didn't want to install a too long gun to protrude over the front. The Germans will pay dearly the delay to produce more powerful guns...

I don't think this is actually true, as far as I known is that the Panzer IV was meant for infantry support in the beginning and after the Panzer III proved that it wasn't up-gradable as the IV the focus went to upgrade the IV instead.
@@PanzerInsight I do find it puzzling that the PzKpfW IV was kept in an infantry support role, even after the StuG III proved to be a real success in France in 1940 & production of Stug IIIs was increased after France fell.
But the most significant mistake was the manufacturers ignoring Hitler's order to install the L/60 50mm gun in the PzKpfW III after the Panzer divisions' difficulties with the well-armoured French tanks & the British Maltilda. Then, during Barbarrossa, when Hitler noticed that his order had been ignored & expressed his extreme displeasure, it still took a many months before any up-gunned PzKpfW IIIs arrived at the Eastern Front!

Yes, if I remember correctly his best friend slipped as they were getting his tank out of the snow or something like that.. English isn't my native language and I have the English edition so maybe I'm wrong, but I think... they had buried the tank in the ground to prevent it from freezing

Faby Ana Neither am I a native English speaker but from what I remember in that part of book it was not mentioned at all why his friend’s tank was dug in the ground but it’s possible it was, like you pointed out, to prevent it from freezing and/or to make it stand out less on the battlefield with the benefit of adding further protection from enemy shells

Ye gods, they loved filming this thing, didn't they? The biggest tanks of the bunch always take the limelight, I guess...
indeed, and it was pretty rare for it's time so they were probably ordered to film it the most.

German tank treads were too narrow to handle the Russian topography and were bogged down in the mud.
Later they got track extensions to lower ground pressure. A stopgap but it helped.
They also introduced wider tracks on the Ausf G.

Ive noticed Tankers in the German and Soviet Armies were short compared to the Allies
1:08. Clearly there was a military band playing in the parade. Curious which music were they playing and whether it was recorded in the original video?
Pretty much all the cameras back then didn't have any sound, so even if there was sound it would probably have been edited in.

No, mostly because they were all upgraded by the Germans.
