Good doco, but strange no mention of the crucial role of the Australian government and military in supporting PNG and Rio Tinto in the criminal blockade of Bourgainville.
Thank you so much for this documentary... I was a child of expats of the mine, born in Arawa, lived in Panguna and we left in 1989.. I have never forgotten our life there, nor the awful things that happened and the people who were killed.. They gave their lives for the freedom of Buka, my beautiful Bougainville.. My dad knew things were bad in 1981, he went to his boss about it, and his boss didn't give a ****, it was not on his agenda... My dad knew the people of Bougainville were not being treated fairly , and the Island was being slowly poisoned... but his boss didn't care.. 1987 , everything kicked off. I would say they were pretty patient, this brewed for YEARS before there was any gunfire... The big men did not care for the environment or the people. Bougainville is the largest of the Solomon Islands, 🇸🇧 and if they want to be free they should be 🌈 Again, thank you for this film 🙏
I was the OPSO of MT Tonu , western Bougainville 2000-2001. We were responsible for maintaining and monitoring the ceasefire between the BRA, BRF, and the PNGDF. I formed a real affinity, respect, and admiration for the Bougainvillians. I formed friendships with people who were on all sides of the conflict. I also saw and had to deal with many things that troubled me for many years. Especially the birth defects, and very high infant mortality rates experienced by the people of the villages who relied upon the water coming from the mine.
Thanks 2566Conan . I'm glad you shared your sentiments. "you've got to be in it, to understand it" You are entitled to your perspectives as per the documentary, but I can assure you that Bougainvillians have been through hell of a time! I'm glad BCL was kicked on the nuts and removed. For now, we need to tread softly when it comes to mining agreements. Our leaders are the ones that are causing havoc these days because of their personal selfish interests!
As I am a bougainvillean,I don't want pangkuna mine to be open..We will still find other ways to raise bougainville's revenue using other resources like tourism, fisheries, nature gas export,etc..... Because mining brings mess destruction on the islands... Politicians don't know how many people are suffering out from it.
Calling bullshit on Rio Tinto. I was there and saw what the ramifications of mining activity. Streams/creeks/rivers were polluted. The land was scared for life. The people suffered and the corrupt politicians and the Corporations got rich. It happened in the Star Mountain chain with the mining taking place destroying swathes of the environment and again the locals suffered in silence.
Brave people that resisted foreign capitalists exploiting their land and people, hope they'll be able to recover and have a better future ahead of them!
If one tenth of the population has been killed over this mine then that constitutes a crime against humanity and so it is only a matter of time before the world community demands justice.
Sadly I doubt it will happen in our lifetime. Rio Tinto still has too much sway in PNG, Bouganville, Canberra and Washington, but they absolutely should pay.
Ok, that was a VERY dirty little war! (But, aren't they all? Dirty, that is, not necessarily little.) I'd never really heard about it until now, which surprises me. I seem to vaguely recall something about it. But, only very vaguely. Anyway... in 1990, Bougainville had a population of 154,000. In the ten year war, 15,000 - 20,000 Bougainvilleans died, according to what I can ascertain. That's a remarkably high figure. As I look at the stats, all these people died during a ten year war and the population increased to 175,000. These stats don't make sense to me, at all. It seems maybe a few thousand died as a direct result of conflict. But, many more died from the blockade. I think that's the deal. I need to do more research before I'm satisfied, though. In any case, I guess an armed uprising is the only answer for folks like this, who are having the landscape upon which they depend ravaged in this way. I wish there was some way to fight the corporations without actually having to fight the corporations. It's a hell of a world we live in, isn't it? Also, future business ought to better manage their short sighted executive board meetings in ivory towers, by not poisoning the environment and jeopardising world geopolitical reputations...smarter to do the right thing and pay the locals a fair share.

Ok, let me get this straight..... the locals who were jealous of their neighbors who had jobs at the mine, were only getting 1% royalty for doing nothing, and wanted more so they tried to take over the mine, Rio Tinto who owned the mine, through the government sent in troops, and they fought with the locals killing 20,000 people, mostly locals, but the locals who didn't have jobs won and still have control of the mine, while the people who had jobs now have no jobs, so everyone is jobless except the lady who is panning for gold in the mine tailings who wants the mine to stay closed, so she can continue to steal their gold scraps.
The local land owners weren't getting a fair share and rio wasn't really investing back inti the local communities like school's etc most of their profits went back overseas
