    Saree's are so feminine and stately. I wish more Indian women wore them in America. I'm a black woman and I plan to get at least 1 in my life. What elegance and style!

    skipping the second step is easier because once you have the saree's pallu (the more decorated side) over your shoulder, the rest of the fabric of the saree can be easier to adjust. i really hope that helped and made sense. it made more sense in my head xD

    Sakhi Fashions, bahot bahot shukria for one of the best YT guides to wearing a sari! Your video is among the few ones that also show how and where to pin the sari to get that really neat, final look. I think it's pretty vital for a beginner as you need to handle the sari all day long. I mean, it's one thing wearing it but few can carry a sari properly. And by pinning it, you can feel more confident that it'll still look good after sitting down, dancing or just moving around. Thanks a zillion times! I'd also like to request more sari videos with thinner sari materials like chiffon and georgette. How would you pin such sheer fabrics? Also, please could yoy show dupatta setting techniques?

    Step 2 is always skipped until you have completed step 3 because you will be unable to accurately pleat in the front unless the shoulder has been draped.

    The Salwar Suit (the pant suit you referred to) is very common in India. Both are worn regularly, though in the modern setting of some Indian states sari's are for more formal occasions. I personally find Salwar Suits to allow much more ease of movement.

    I've watched a few tutorials and they all seem to set the pallu over the left shoulder. Is it preferred to be left or does it matter? Maybe it's a right hand is more commonly dominant and therefore needs to be more free? Please explain.

    the 2nd step is folding the fabric after you adjust the pallu's lenght in the shoulder. Perhaps, you can't adjust it's lenght if you first do the 2nd step, so they do in disorder.

    If you drape your shoulder first and allow the pallu to hang at the level you desire, then you will be able to tell how much needs pleated in the front because of the fabric that remains loose around your midsection. Some women are heavier, while others are very slim, so it will very greatly. After you have draped your shoulder, draw the fabric hanging loose around you waist to the front and pleat it until it is snug, and then tuck it in.

    I'm guessing these videos are for cultural newcomers such as myself? Therefore, my question is: is it offensive for non-desi people to wear the sari? Thank you :)

    • @ckcg6677
      @ckcg6677 8 років тому +1

      +Arianna Chiriff It is not considered offensive AT ALL. In fact, Indians like it when foreigners take the effort to wear a sari. Also, this video is not just for 'cultural newcomers', as you put it. I'd say it is mostly for the younger generation of Indians who have no idea how to wear the sari and are studying/working away from home (i.e. didn't quite get the hang of draping a sari while staying with their mommies). At least, that's why I'm here. I can drape a georgette/chiffon/'flowy' sari with ease, but I still haven't figured out how to drape a silk/cotton sari perfectly. Most Indian women of my age grew up wearing jeans/skirts/salwar kameez. The saris were worn only for school events, family weddings, etc and you always had your mom or aunties or friends to help out. My mother's generation was different. My mother wore a sari to work every day. These days, it's either Western formal wear or kurtas at work.

    • @ckcg6677
      @ckcg6677 8 років тому

      +Ri Ki I'd be really surprised if these were Indians - the ones who had issues with cultural appropriation by Westerners. A word of warning - Indians are usually appreciative only when the sari is draped modestly :) The only other reason Indians hate it when Westerners do their own take on Indian culture is when they use religious symbols where they're not supposed to. I remember there was a huge furore many years ago when a Western fashion house used images of Indian gods and goddesses on bikinis or some such thing.

    • @ckcg6677
      @ckcg6677 8 років тому

      +Ri Ki Also, this video isn't helpful at all. They skipped the important parts. I just ran into this channel called Vithya Hair and Make Up. Check out '10 Minute Saree Draping with Vithya' AND 'Pleating a Saree with Vithya'. She really explains everything in detail.

      It depends on where you are wearing it.
      As a general rule most of all Hindu religious events and poojas require to remove shoes, specially if done indoors (temples). Other events as corporate events, etc, do not require to do so.
