Wow, and I thought moving from Denver to Dallas was a culture shock and complicated. I was actually escorted (nicely) into a side room at the Department of Motor Vehicles by security during an emotional outburst/breakdown after the third time waiting in line with 2 toddlers and still couldn't get done what I went for. I checked to see what I needed each time before I left the house and each time there was another thing or I did something in the wrong order with insurance, inspection, i.d. etc.. I am a rule follower and law abiding citizen, I really am, but by the time I went to another office for something else and was turned away for the second time after asking if I had EVERYTHING I needed before I left the house, but when I got there I didn't have my husband's signature for something, I'll just say, I guess they looked at the wrong page the first time. Laws regarding who gets what after someone dies are different, Texas has a homestead law, so many different things. This is a good reminder that each state is different in what they require, but sounds like Alaska is a whole other level and you are bringing up things I've not heard anyone mention in so many videos I've watched. You don't know what you don't know, but I'm sure this video will help someone with all of the info. Thanks for sharing, very interesting.
Rare stories are people who went to the DMV and had an awesome experience. DMV seems to have such a bad reputation as government employees and don't seem to care. I know people go through the same in other states (as you did) and I TOTALLY get your frustration there! I like that Colorado started an appointment time now for DMV. Now you can get in there within 5 minutes of your appointment and be out. Yup they started that just as I was leaving to Alaska! They don't have appointments out here!
A couple things I tell people: 1) rent somewhere the first year and use that year to explore and figure out exactly where and how you want to live 2) before buying vacant land, walk the land in the summertime. The property can look great on maps but end up being treed swamp
Buying land in winter is definitely an issue. I have seen a few people buy land sight unseen. That is scary. I could never do that.

I actually was going to do that! Rent a place but luckily I found my property before I had to do that. Very good advise though. And I have seen a bunch of property that was a lot of acreage but all muskeg! Always "Boots on the ground!" Thank you so much Bill!

I agree, with everything you are saying. Might want to add that living (off grid) is a full time job with pleanty of overtime! There is nothing easy about it. The store could be 25-100 miles away. The doctor is also. Better like no, really like yourself or partner a lot. Spending all day everyday with yourself or better half can get old. Test the water before you jump in!

Very good solid advice. You have to be person of 'stock' to weather Alaska. And the points about the neighbors and not wanting to bring in changes are so good. You are to go into Alaska and blend in. It probably takes years to establish yourself and earn that trust. As for me I am happy and content watching your adventures and leave the living there to you and others. Blessings
we're having the same issue in Wyoming. The weather is harsh, water can be hard to find, and politics are mostly very conservative. People move in, complain about the way things are done here, and are surprised when they're snowed in for two weeks with no way to get out of their driveway.
Yeah Alaska is not for everyone but I certainly enjoy it! I know people think that all the changes they would like to bring in would be "better" for everyone but we don't want Alaska to turn into a theme park! I think you gain far more respect just wanting to blend in. It is an honor to have you along for my journey!

Most folks here are either running from or running to something. Look out for both kinds of people. The best folks are the ones you never see.

I was born in Fairbanks, moved to the lower 48 when i was four, my mother while she was alive always wanted to take us kids back to see Alaska since none of us remembered it, i haven't been back but until i can i watch your videos

First: GREAT HAT, reminds me of a song. You should note that climate varies drastically depending on is you are near a coast, in the interior, in a plains area, or in a valley. People should note that Alaska is HUGE, and then there is also many islands on which you can live. Fuel can be extremely expensive, so can fresh foods.

That was out standing. I am the guy who will meet a stranger with my rifle. Even after living in this house for pert near 20 yrs I still don't know my neighbors. One thing tho after you are 65 you get to hunt,fish and trap for free.😉 However all in all you pretty well covered it. For newbies tho I would recommend visiting in the summer and perhaps mid January.

It’s good that you put out this information. I, for one, am not moving to Alaska. But so many people are that I worry about Alaska losing its magic due to overpopulation. I know that seems far fetched but never underestimate the power of humans to screw things up. I think the vast majority of people simply could not handle the demands of living there. For those who can, good luck. There are lots of gorgeous, remote places elsewhere for the rest of us.
Christine, I agree, and I don't think I could handle the long cold dark winters. I like to fish year around too much also. I can be self-sufficient and isolated here in far northern CA.

Well said Christine! Probably why most Alaskans don't want "outsiders" moving in. Mother Nature is the great equalizer though! Alaska is pretty extreme and even just trying to grow a garden out here has its problems. I mean most people don't have to worry about bears using their garden as a salad bar! Alaska is a beautiful place for sure but I have seen so many other places that would be VERY nice places to live. I think I just like Alaska because so few want to live with this many hardships! 😉💚
Anchorage lost its magic long ago. There was a time when it was more or less a sleepy little city of a few hundred thousand. Now it is no different than any city of similar size in the lower 48. Even some of the semi-rural communities are now seeing what I'd consider undesirable suburban sprawl. Thankfully, the more rural communities, where living presents entirely different challenges, are holding their own for now.
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska We have similar issues in Wyoming--we always say Wyoming is Alaska in the lower 48. People move here from cities and move out after 2-3 years. There can be 4 feet of snow and -30 air temp with 30 MPH wind. Last year, we had to be evacuated for a forest fire with 100+ MPH wind. We've had grizzly bears in our front yard.

Great video Allie!! Love the dog sled scene!! Speaking of surrendering your previous residency/ID/DL; here is one of the reasons I have not established Alaska residency yet... in Texas, because of my disabled veteran status I am property tax exempt. If I change residence BEFORE this house is sold, then I lose that tax exempt status and I immediately incur a massive property tax bill!! That is just another thing to think about, and to the best of my knowledge Alaska does not have as robust a program of veterans benefits as does Texas. Alaska does a lot more for active duty military than it does for veterans, so that is just another point to consider when moving to AK. I was going to move all of my banking to a local bank (the one doing the escrow on my property) once I move up there, but now I think I'm going to go ahead and do that when I get up there next spring. That way it's already taken care of. Another possible "utility" bill for residency might be internet service. I use NOMAD internet, and they will bill me wherever I basically tell them to. Last summer when I had problems with their equipment, they did ship me a replacement part to my PO BOX. Just some thoughts to compliment your very informative video!

You look so pretty. Very informative..I hope all the people who are interested in moving there views this. Real life/reality is a lot different from vacationing to a dream place . I live in a small community in the country. I live on a gravel road .A Bayou runs in front of my house and sugar cane fields behind it. Our only grocery store closed down a few months ago..it had been here for a hundred years. So lots of traveling for taking care of business. But,it's home to me. Thanks for an excellent video.

As always you are full of good information! Helping us dreamers along the way. Always enjoy your videos but these Alaska tips and tricks are at the top of my list. Unseasonably cold here at the moment. I just think of it as training for my future way of life. Others complain,but I am soaking it up! Stay safe!
Don't try and change the state Hollywood already has done enough damage to Alaska ! I work 20 years in Alaska before moving .

Complicated mostly because Alaska doesn't mess around! 😁 They also still do things "old style". Like closing business to go moose hunting or just closing early on a Monday or Friday because it's slow. I think I was just so excited to finally move here that it didn't bother me until much later! 🤣🧡

Yeah I know this video would not have been for everyone as not everyone is moving to Alaska! But I have to make sure I get that info out to them just in case. I did try to make it entertaining enough for everyone though (I hope) 😉 But for those who don't plan on moving to Alaska, it is so awesome to have anyone along for my journey! You really should visit Alaska at least once though! It truly is amazing! 🤗🧡
Another thing to consider.
Before the pandemic many/most employers will not hire an applicant that has not spent at least 1 full winter in Alaska, not sure if it is that same post Pandemic.
Also I bet this is why the State has many of the requirements for obtaining residency and it benefits.
Very good info and I hope it will keep someone for making a error in judgment by not doing major research before the move.
You make MANY great points and I bet they can be a major shock to many new residents that think their "privileges/benefits" start the minute they land on AK soil.
While AK is part of the US in many ways as you point out it can be more like a Foreign Country when you are relocating.
If you are considering the move DO YOUR HOMEWORK , don't be one of the over 100 people that go missing (never to be found) in the State every year.
On a side note, love the outfit/look and the switch to 1080p60, easier on the eyes. Can't wait til you get Starlink and go 4K.

Hey Alone! As usual, you have an extremely valuable and educational video this week. While I'm not planning to move to remote Alaska, there are those who look for similar channels for information to help them choose a location. I'm glad you can provide such a good resource for others.
It's been quite a busy couple of weeks here in Ohio. We had an expected death in the family, and I had to travel out of state for a funeral. The car needed some repairs (flat tire with a screw that went through the sidewall - ugh!) right before the trip out of state. At least my car was in good condition for the 600 mile round trip.
Right after returning from the funeral, our school held open house. My students made cookies to serve to all the parents. I over estimated how many we would need. We had kids from all over the building come and assist us - and they were all very proud that they were part of the cooking crew that made the cookies. It was a very busy and eventful couple of days. Now, I'm focused on data collection for the second quarter of the school year. I'd like to have all of that finished before our holiday break, because we return with only 7 days before the end of the quarter. That becomes far too hectic for my preference.
Yesterday I ran to the grocery on my way home from work to collect the remainder of the necessities for Thanksgiving. Mostly I needed the turkey, the whipped cream, and produce. I've been buying and stockpiling items needed for a feast for six months. One of my co-workers remarked that she was hungry for good chili, so today I mixed a pot from my home canned stores. I'm going to take some to work on Monday, and we are going to have chili for our lunch! I'm trying to foster a fun team environment, because things may change over the next month or so. We are getting an influx of students from younger grades, and need to begin another classroom. When that happens, I want to keep my staff happy and willing to stay. Otherwise, it can become too stressful not only for the kids but for the staff as well.
I've thawed a beef roast that I'm feeding the fellas tomorrow. We missed our visit last week, because I was out of town. I am loving heading to the freezer and the root cellar to determine what I can cook without having to buy staples at the supermarket every week. Right now, I'm going to the store about every 3-4 weeks - and that's just for the convenience of getting fresh produce and dairy. I know that you freeze your coffee creamer - is that heavy cream or half and half? I'd like to stock that over the summer when the cost is lower, so I have it on hand for winter needs.

my wife and i are in the process of moving up. one of the things we never thought of was the difference in day to day items. extention cords for instance, they have extention cords for extreme cold (rated at -50). regular cords like we use in the south get brittle and present safety hazards in extreme cold. we are trying to hit all the necessities but there is so much we wont even think of till we are there

NEW subscriber. WOW, you crammed a lot of info into this one. Alaska is a beautiful place for sure and solitude is something I really enjoy. And I kinda like "definite" distinct seasons. And a person needs to be challenged IN life....to be tested BY life in order to respect his own abilities....and limits. ALASKA seems the perfect place for that! You seem practical and pragmatic.🤔
