Lululemon is everywhere - but where did it come from? The seemingly overnight sensation is actually decades in the making, and in this episode of Threaducation, I'll be tracing it back to the very beginning, as we learn the surprisingly controversial story of Chip Wilson, and how he built a yoga brand that's on it's way to competing with Nike and Adidas.

I never thougth I'd buy clothes from Lululemon but I'm glad I did. I was looking for a hoodie and ended up purchasing the Steady State hoodie. I couldnt believe how expensive it was but the fit and feel was perfect. It has become my favorite go to hoodie. And I also put my brand name on the hoodie (for personal use only).

This is a very informative video on a topic I never thought I would find value in. But about a year or so ago I thrifted a westbeach puffer vest for dirt cheap but didn't realise until now the history of that company.
Lululemon never was a brand or area that appealed to me but THIS doc not only shed some great light but was EXTREREMELY informative wow and also peaked my interest...mkes me kinda want to do Yoga too lol!! great great job!

As a lifelong Vancouver resident and a dancer, Lululemon has been a staple for me.
It’s like you said… they are a fabric tech company. I think people that who don’t like lululemon don’t really get that.

lululemon was amazing as a showroom when it first came to the midwest USA I think around 2012, my pieces from that time are still perfect

I mean he is fatphobic, supports child labor, and designed his brand name with a fairly racist sentiment. I'd say he deserves the hate, but this doc was super enlightening and interesting

To clarify, Chip didn't leave Westbeach when Morrow owned it. It had changed hands multiple times before he finally left for good around 2001. Westbeach clothing had separated from the retail side, and Chip was still designing the outerwear until then.

Lulu Island is the name of the island south of Vancouver, where Lululemon was started. That region is home to the most Asian cities in North America, and on Lulu Island, Mandarin and Cantonese are the most common languages spoken on the street, in homes, on signs, etc. So yah, it was probably an inside joke. But considering that half his staff was probably Asian, I wouldn't call it racist, more just a silly joke

Your citation is incorrect: "Westbeach shifted its focus to snowboarding in 1988, the same year that it became an Olympic sport." I'm Canadian. Snowboarding became an Olympic sport in 1998 not 1988. Canadian Ross Rebagliati won the men's giant slalom and became the first athlete to win a gold medal in snowboarding at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. So your point is rather that Chip predicted the rise of snowboarding in the 1990s.

For all the people who don't know how he came up with the name Lululemon it's actually because he thought that else sounded Western to Japanese people and he originally wanted it to be a brand for white people only not for people of color or cultural basically only for white people that's the reason I don't shop there
