@@omarililly9970This commenter (tarod) is being facetious - not giving proper credit where’s due if you haven’t noticed. Box t-shirts by a mainstream designer is the most unthoughtful cheapest form of a fashion product you can sell. A “box t-shirt” has no shape form or design other than the Walmart t-shirt with a print that says DIOR or GUCCI on it. Usually one would purchase $350 -$500 for such a bland t-shirt just to say they have on ‘Dior’ or ‘Gucci’… now with this knowledge, re-read his comment and see if you have the same output. He’s inferring that they are produced for “the people” (African -Americans) such as Dapper Dan.
The goat! It's crazy how much all these brands were trying to shut him down and end up copying his style. Black designers, you are validated regardless
I’m so pissed that I missed a chance to meet Dapper Dan in NY. He was in Brooklyn Library where they were hosting a fashion event and I didn’t know it was that day until it was over. Am glad u made this so I could know more abt him
Wow man you really did your research, props to you. The most in depth docu on him yet and I’ve pratically seen them all. Dapper Dan is a legend and this did him justice.
In Africa he traded his American clothing for their style of dress and that’s what hooked him. He loved the vibrant colors. Drug dealers wore his clothes first and rappers followed because they wanted to look like the street cats. “Made in Harlem: A Memoir.” His book goes into more detail for those intrigued with his story.
great video as always. I really like stories about individual people making their way to the top, with unconventional methods like Dan did with "using" big companies works. It always feels like a personal spin, to take something existing and show it through a personal lense, thereby creating something completely new and inspiring. The art world is always a take & give, art is created throughout the process of observing several inspirations, the culmination of them is the artwork. After an artwork is created, other artist make take this with various other things as inspo and create something new, which can also be used as inspo. I really like the Pope-Series of Francis Bacon, where Bacon used a portrait of the Pope Innocent X by Velázquez as a silhoutte, giving his own, dark and disturbing spin. Whilst Dans work is far from dark and disturbing, a certain originality is given and even if the Logomania conquers the piece, his influence and vision is clearly seen. The process, the inspiration and the motive is clearly noticeable, it even seems like it screams at the viewer. I love it.
while I love your content, look into something like a shure-37mb. Your microphone is very subpar and I usually put on captions and turn the video down more than I usually do. Your voice is fine, but you sound like a facetime audio call.
Thank you for giving Dapper Dan his flowers 💐
this man is the reason why ur favorite luxury designer puts out box logo shirts for the people
And yet he know where he gets the credit, he deserves the things he did for streetwear as a whole I feel like his name should hold a lot more weight
