Back in the late 70s, early 80s there were a couple of Star trek games, one was I think a board game, the other was called star fleet battles if I remember right. It was an rpg that had every type of ship class from the classic series. I remember playing it and really enjoying it. I recently got the core rules for the current game but was really disappointed in the book. So it sits on the shelf as part of my game collection. I like the set you have, it sort of reminds me of the original games. I wish I could find the classic boxed set again because I would definitely be playing again.
Given the timeframe you're speaking of, I believe you're talking about the Star Trek RPG from FASA. This is readily available on eBay for very reasonable prices, so you can certainly play again if you want! Thare are PDFs floating around too. You may want to check out the Last Unicron Games RPG for Star Trek; it's more simulation-oriented and less narratively inclined than Star Trek Adventures, but more evolved in its mechanics than the FASA game (IMO anyway). It's also easily available on the secondary market, and the fan-made homebrew stuff for it is excellent as well. I've reviewed some key products in that line for the Next-Gen edition on this channel; someday I'll review the TOS and DS9 books as well. As for Star Fleet Battles, it still exists and is actively supported (albeit at a very slow pace) -- I've a number of videos on the current edition (and its simpler offshoot, Federation Commander) on this very channel :)
Great review, thanks. I've been told that for starting out the the Digest rules and the Utopia Planitia book covers everything for basis playing in any era. Would you agree with that?
Sorry for the late reply! I suppose that would work, but I guess it depends on your level of Star Trek lore knowledge. The Digest is really TOS-focussed whereas the Core Books are set in 2371 and have a LOT of info on that period, but if you know that stuff already and don't mind not having all that info to hand, then that combo would work.
Discovery Book is not the show. Its well written and introduce a lot of background lore between Enterprise and Original Series. Introducing also Terran universe stuff.
You're totally right! I realised the same thing later, and that I can make use of the lore any which way I like at my own table, which is why in one of my later videos you can see I bought the Discovery campaign guide alongside Lower Decks :)
the dice are easy attack dice 6 = 2 hits 5= 1 hit 3&4 blank 2=1 effect 1=2 effects the skill dice 1 on the d20 is the effect. total price at most a couple of pounds/dollars .
I'm new to Star trek. Is there a significant difference between TOS and TNG other than timeline, uniforms ? I mean the rules are the same, isen't it ? 🤷♂️
The rules are the same, but the gear, tech and politics are really different. In TOS, the Klingons are enemies, and TNG they're allies; in TNG there are replicators, not so in TOS; TNG ships are signifianctly more powerful than TOS; there are no Ferengi, Borg, Betazoids, etc. in TOS; and so on. A lot of modern viewers of Trek haven't ever seen TOS, so I do think there'd be good reason to do the same set but pointed at the TNG era, which feels really different and will be more familiar to modern players.
@@PpAirO5 Another way to go about it would be to get the Tricorder Set -- which does have all the dice you need and the Rules Digest has all the core rules nicely presented, and goes for pretty cheap these days (~$50/£44 depending where you look). Then get a nice used copy of the STA Core Rulebook, where you can get the TNG setting info, races, etc. I have a video coming up on the Core Book and GM Kit next week :)
I vaguely remember a comment from the Modiphius Forums, I think, where Jim Johnson (line director) stated they weren't planning to reprint the starters? That suggested to me at the time that they might be revisiting the set and/or doing a whole new take on it, but please take my vague memories with a massive spoon of salt :)
I have old FASA modules that easily convert to 2d20 for The Tricorder Set.
Really appreciate your in-depth analysis. I’m planning to run a recurring session with family so it helps to know what to know, before buying!

Excellent overview, thank you. Love this game, and everything you say rings true (I don't have the Tricorder Set, but have the others).
Love this video. Will you be doing a video series on STA? I'd love your take on the supplements as well. Great job!
Great review, thanks.

I wish the the rules book for Federation Commander was as this attractive.

@@djthorsilver I just saw that I'm going trough your videos content. Love how you present the content in each RPG review

can you use Regaler D6 for attack dice?
Yes, you can, there's conversion table: rolling a 1 or a 2 means 1 or 2 damage, 3 or 4 give you nothing, 5 and 6 give you 1 damage + and Effect.
Any new word on a newer starter set.?
