- This tutorial shows you how to set-up windows remote desktop in order to connect to a windows virtual machine. This allows you to use the windows VM as if you were at the screen, rather than the poor web interface available with most virtual machines.

Agreed this is a much better implemntation of VM, shame my old PC doesn't support Remote Desktop (Needs to be Win 10 Pro :( )
Yeah it makes it so much more usable! Sucks that its not across the board
first of all i love your videos they really help for configuration. here i am having a challenge i do manage to connect to the vm remotely though it keeps saying my username or password is incorrect. this is the challenge am facing. though on the vm if i log off i use the same password and it works fine
Helpful! Thank you for doing this.
Useful
Thank you so much
Hey, for the people that have intermediate experience, could you add a shortened steps list with all specifics in your description? It would be very helpful and time saving for the more advanced viewers
Will, would you consider an update for Windows 11 ? There are a couple of differences when setting up the static IP. I tried to set it up but Windows would not let me save my selections. The DHCP got me going for now though.
Thank you!
Is it possible to port forward on your router and connect externally?
I ❤️ SpaceRex
Any way to remotely connect to the vm through Remote Desktop while away from your NAS location (not on the same network)? Thank you so much!
Yes. Setup a VPN server on your synology
Thanks! is it possible to store user credential without entering them any time?
alright...thank you!
it works for exams in browser lockers??
Great videos SpaceRex. I've set this up using windows server datacentre as it's got less bloatware than windows 10. I think I've managed to set up the static IP (slightly different method to the one on the video), but when I try to connect I get an error code. Do I need to open a port on my router for this to work or something ? The error code is...
Error code: 0x516
Extended error code: 0x0
Activity ID: {982004f3-36ea-425f-b028-1559d8950000}
Ty for helping
How is the performance? What's the dsm model?
nice
Hey, @SpaceRex I was following your video, but when I try to change my IP address to static there is no IP settings on my network tab, so I cannot change it from automatic to manual. Have you gone through this problem ever?
I was able to rdp from my windows 10 home to my virtual machine without changing ipv4 just enabling remote desktop and allowing firewall
what is the keyboard shortcut to get into windows VM using mac keyboard?
I enjoy your videos and now you are less a robot and more human ... jejeje
hahaha thanks! Yeah It was hard at first but I like to think that I am getting the hang of it
If you give access to your virtual machine remotely to someone can they access your host pc?
@SpaceRex, Is there a way to configure this for Remote Desktop access off the local network?
Yeah. I would setup a VPN server and connect back this is the most secure way
SpaceRex oddly enough I watched the video you did on this as well but it gets stuck on connecting. Any thoughts on what to look for in the setup? I used L2TP in the VPN Server and set it up through System Preferences and it just never connects. Do I have to be off my local network to test a valid connection?
@@SpaceRexWill Do you have a tutorial for this step 🙂
I have setup ip address, but encounter connection errors in rdp clients. I see windows vm device in router settings, but in synology vm manager ip is -. What am i doing wrong?
same for me also
When I change the IP settings on the VM the network status changes to "No Internet access" and the remote connection does not work. Any ideas?
Sounds like the IP you set is not in your subnet. Change it to DHCP and just lookup the IP if it changes
@SpaceRex Is there a way to power on a VM from an SSH session? I do not want to have the VM running all the time on an offsite Synology Server. I would like to be able to SSH to the sever, start the VM and then RDP to the VM over a VPN. Any suggestions?
Hmmm I am sure that there is but do not know of the commands. You might ask synology or someone here might know
What virtual machine manager are you using
Synology
@@SpaceRexWill never heard of it before
how about outside network? please help
You will want to setup a VPN server
How can we access it when we are not in home network? 192.168.1.155 will only work when we are in home network.
You can setup a vpn server and use that to connect back to your network securely ua-cam.com/video/1aaqqw3eQac/v-deo.html
