When you're in the middle of your latest Godzilla obsession and one of your favourite content creators makes a completely unexpected Godzilla video RIGHT as you're about to go to bed
Loved Half Century War--especially how Stokoe chooses the Millennium Goji as his model right down to the 'nuclear explosion boiling out of his mouth' (see 2:44 as an example). And another interesting touch: Stokoe always has Goji's eyes 'white out' when he fires his atomic breath...and I think this inspired Michael Dougherty in G:KOTM because it seems when G2019 uses his breath his eyes also white out/blue out.
"Nature has a way sometimes of reminding Man of just how small he is. She occasionally throws up terrible offspring's of our pride and carelessness to remind us of how puny we really are in the face of a tornado, an earthquake, or a Godzilla. The reckless ambitions of Man are often dwarfed by their dangerous consequences. For now, Godzilla - that strangely innocent and tragic monster - has gone to earth. Whether he returns or not, or is never again seen by human eyes, the things he has taught us remain..." - Steve Martin (Raymond Burr), Godzilla 1985 [US version of The Return of Godzilla, originally released in 1984]
Man, I remember my dad picking these up from the comic shop near where he worked and bringing them home every other month back when I was like 10 or 11. We would read it together and marvel at just how insanely good the art was. Revisited it today, and, yeah, it still holds up all these years later. Incredible comic, probably my favorite of the Godzilla comics I've read.
Every so often I get on a Godzilla kick, and I've rewatched the heisei and millennium era movies so many times I can't do it anymore without at least 4-5 months between without burning out within 30 mins, but fan stuff like this is always interesting. Movie analysis, comics discussion, lost media, behind the scenes, all of it is so cool. Your stuff is really well done, and is so fun to watch! Thanks for the entertainment!
I've worn out three copies of half century war so, I love the darned thing...two observations: Big "G"'s atomic breath reminds me of the Millennium 'style' as it seems to 'explode' out of Goji's mouth and throat (Not to mention the 'sizzling bacon' sound his spines make as they charge up...); secondly (and this is truly pedantic hairsplitting) Ota should have been riding on an M24 Chaffee tank, not a Sherman-=and he needs more crewmen.
That fact about the Godzilla roar in the comic is great. What a creator Stokoe is. I wish he would make more books but I totally get why he doesn't given the sheer amount of work he puts into any one single panel. Great video man.
Shame this ended before Shin. They could've introduced it as yet another experiment to make a controllable Godzilla that backfires. Especially since it has bits of human DNA in it. Could even link it to Biollante.
Of the Godzilla comics I've read I've seen some good ones and some not so good ones, and from what I remember this was one of the former. Probably going to have to find my issues of it to reread it now, thanks for the nice reminder of it and the little background details I never knew.
These videos are the reason I'm waiting for Wednesdays every week. The depth of these analysis is a testament to your talent and interests Matt. Thanks for doing this. Also, I'm not a fan of monster films. If I wanna see a monster I'll go look in a mirror. 😂👹
Hi Matt Draper. Love this video and the one you made about Unmade Godzilla films. But in that video your info on King of Monsters: Resurrection of Godzilla was incorrect. It wasn't going to be a remake at all. It was written in 1978 and the story was a more precursor of what would become "The Return on Godzilla" in 1984. Also, Godzilla: Legend of the Asuka Fortress, aka Godzilla vs. the Asuka Fortress, was written in 1985 and went on to become Gunhed in 1989. Toho Kingdom hasn't updated the info yet. I found out about it in a book called "Writing Japanese Monsters' by John Lemay. Just wanted to let you know. I hope this helped.
Hey Mat great videos man , i found your channel a few months back and i love it! I am waiting a watchmem video, or something about Tim Burtons world , keep the great job anyway :D
Your videos are so good man, thanks for taking on the Big G himself. Talking about massive destruction, would you ever do a Crisis on Infinite Earths video?
Old comment, but the Millennium Godzilla's are all separate continuities, with the exception of Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla and Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S. Also personally my favourite Godzilla is the Hesei Godzilla, though I do wish he would do melee combat more.
I've read it few years ago and it was pretty 'meh' to me - but now I see that I must have not payed any attention to it, because I haven't even noticed that splendid, detailed and wonderfully coloured artwork back then, and neither have I remembered what the story is about - the only thing I did remember was 'a bunch of guys in a cartoonish tank runing away/after Godzilla and Kaiju's'. Gonna give it another shot soon thanks to your amazing video. That also made me remember an ugly, edgy series with Godzilla which title I cannot seem to remember (or google-find). In the first issue Godzilla suddenly woke up on some beach and immedietely ate some children, after which he went on a rampage. There were many deaths of our world celebrity-like people in the series which were mocked by the characters in it, there was a lot of president Obama and the main character was some tough, brutal, out-of-this-era soldier who went rouge, escaped into the forests and traveled with a girl whose parents were killed by a monster - they eventually found and launched a broken Mechagodzilla and faced Godzilla. Does it seem familiar to you? Maybe not, that's for the best, really. It was bad (and perhaps that was what I mistaken "The Half Century War" in my memories).
@@MattDraper I found the title - it's "Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters" by IDW from 2011-2012, a 12-issue series. In my opinion it's better to treat it as and edgy joke, but even then it's meh - the best part of the story is (spoiler) about a father who wants revenge on Godzilla for killing his children, but it's just a small, insignificant part of a 'story'. I'll try to reread 'Half Century War' soon, though. It seems like a much better love-letter to the genre that also understands it much better.
@@MattDraper If you're still interested in doing Godzilla videos, would Godzilla in Hell be a good suggestion? Just a suggestion, not trying to make you do it (obviously) just thought it would make for an interesting video, if you're up to it of course.
I have the special edition hard-cover release of this mini-series. The only true was to experience this story in my opinion. Seriously, this story is just BEGGING to be adapted into a movie or streaming mini-series! Too bad Netflix's last 2 attempts were.... disappointing.
It must be awful for the human characters in the Godzilla universe. Being in the middle of fights between giant monsters every day and in danger of being stepped on.
Really awesome video, Matt! I love Godzilla and I also love James Stokoe's art. I've gotta say, I honestly wish you had your own TV show. I would tune in forever to watch your shows on the telly. Please keep up the great work! 😁🤘🤘
'Up from the Depths...Thirty Stories High!!!' Another great video about a really great comic...any chance of doing some Transformers-related stuff any time soon, please?
@@MattDraper Awesome!!! I love the '80s Marvel Transformers comics with an almighty passion - and the Marvel UK ones in particular - as they're the ones I grew up with, but a video on the more recent 'More Than Meets the Eye'/'Lost Light' IDW Comics run by James Roberts et al would be even better in my view, yes? (In case you haven't read the latter, this series of articles by Chris Sims on the sadly-defunct Comics Alliance site at comicsalliance.com/tags/the-transformed-man/ should help to get you up to speed, yes?).

My favorite Godzilla movie ever. Also, the first VHS I ever got. I was born in 1984.
Imagine if the Monsterverse builds up to its own infinity war.
It could be called _Godzilla and Kong: Half Century War_
"Notice me, Godzilla-senpai!"
I guess this is the most close of a Yandere-type romance anime-inspired work in Kaiju genre :)

I am so glad you reviewed this. As a huge Godzilla and comic fan, this is my favorite comic book staring Godzilla
This is one of my favorite Godzilla comics, due in no small part to the incredible art of James Stokoe, one of my absolute favorite comic artists.
He’s the best! I’m immediately interested in anything he touches.
@@MattDraper I actually work at a comic shop, and when we got a shipment of James Stokoe artbooks you bet your ass I snagged one right away

"senpai notice me" was going through my head this whole video
Thank you so much for making this. Half Century War is one of my favorite pieces of Godzilla media
Mine, too, it’s fantastic!
I bought this book at a Scholastic book sale in 6th grade and it is still the smartest decision I have ever made in my educational career.

I appreciate the nod to the original Gojira opening. Yeah this and Godzilla Goes to Hell are some of my favorite comics of the big G.
Thanks for the insight. Great review on what is easily the best Godzilla comic ever made.

I'd say check out Godzilla in Hell along with this one. It's weird and has a rotating cast of writer/artists, including Stokoe!
