Never ceasing to send electrifying impulses up and down my spine. R.I.P. Squire - you'll live in the hearts ( and central nervous systems ! ) of your fans forever...
I'm 54 and have seen these guys sooo many times around the world! They are my favorites and always will be! They have no peers! When they quit it will be a sad day in my life!
What a Performer Chris is! Impecable and Charismatic as always, smiling and full of emotion! WHAT A MASTER of the stage! King of the Bass guitar to this day!
I didn't even know who he was when I saw Yes the first time (1978). Didn't know their songs, Jon Anderson, nothing! I was a Rick Wakeman fan from his Journey to the Center of the Earth and other albums of classical-rock stuff. I was blown away by the group, and Chris Squire was tremendous! What a fucking bassist!!!! Subsequently I went back and got all their albums and really appreciated his brilliance! Very sad to see he's gone from us! Some of my best memories are doing cool stuff while listening to Yes!
Takes me back to Tormato album. Chris enjoyed throwing notes out to the crowd...and then came the smile. Saw YES at Arco in Sacramento, he broke out with Amazing Grace and the place thundered. Never forget that sound and power.
Tutto molto bello un grande spettacolo ❤🌹....MEMORIES Vorrei sapere il titolo dell'album live di questo fantastico brano grazie.... Sempre e per sempre....YES....❤
It's actually part of the pickup on Chris' Bass. A horseshoe pickup. On the regular 4001's and 4003's, it's just a plastic cover, and most people remove them.
VallinSFAS. A bass guitar is useful too, LOL. I'm a tall bassist as well (5ft 11ins) but when I met Chris he dwarfed me. He has hands like the Hulk and nearly broke my bloody fingers when enthusiastically shaking my hand LOL. A lovely friendly bloke is our Sir Chris though, long may he reign.
my favorite rock bassist of all time, hands down. With all due respect to Sir Paul McCartney, who's melodic and propulsive bass-playing was the inspiration for Squire.
ACTUALLY it's an aluminum "bell". Fenders also have them. They attenuate some frequencies so the instruments blend better, but they don't mute the natural string vibration. Studio players and orchestra players keep them, but most hard rockers take them off.
dyhanendra is correct about the horseshoe pickup, they are a feature of older 4001s Rickenbacker basses and reissues such as the 4001v63 or the 4001c64s. Modern rickenbacker basses have a similar looking pickup cover - but this can be taken off, the horseshoe cannot.
it's called the 'horseshoe pickup'...taken from beauchamp's original pickup design from 1931. it's part of the pick-up..the strings reside inside the EMF of the pickup...the output of a horseshoe is like none other! they sell on eBay for $500-$800 nowadays..just the pick-up!
Actually that was James Jamerson who completely redefined the role of the bass in general. then came along John Entwistle for redifining rock bass and the tone a bass can achieve.
Well the capes do go back to the Yessongs days, and I like the Arthurian-Elvis thing he has on "Hold Out Your Hand" ("Eat this, Rick!"). He's tall...he can't help it. Height is useful for a bassist.
@beagleboy1955 There is a rumor they will tour in 2011 with Trevor Rabin...This time I will go see them as i think it will be the last time they will tour.
@rushrushrushfan i know what you mean. Im a huge rush fan too, but it really doesnt matter how your play it, its what comes out of the amp, and this is some pretty good shit.
What the heck is Squire doing to stay in shape? He looks better here than he did in the 70's. People often think that Anderson is essential to the Yes sound, but for me it has always been Squire, and his voice is as distinctive as Anderson's. (Not that I am snubbing Jon Anderson in any way, just trying to give Squire his due.)
What about Paul McCartney? He used a pick on a RIC, and I've heard that he's quite good. Do you know if Chris Squire got the idea about using the Pick on a Ric from Sir Paul? I know John Entwhistle also used a Ric, but most likely without a pic.
Seemingly everyone loves this song yet the band refused/s to play it live. Aside from snippets of course. My dream Yes set list would probably have NONE of their "hits" on it...
The Rick is a way too honest instrument. If you can play one with a clean sound and not sound bad, you have to be good. Chris Squire is the only bassist I've seen that I forgive playing a bass with a pick, though I admit I bought my Rick because of Geddy (but Geddy bought his because of Chris!)
hte most underrated yes song
Never ceasing to send electrifying impulses up and down my spine. R.I.P. Squire - you'll live in the hearts ( and central nervous systems ! ) of your fans forever...
RIP Chris, my hero for the last 43 years and the best bass player ever. Hope you're spirit is soaring to the Heart Of The Sunrise right now.
I'm 54 and have seen these guys sooo many times around the world! They are my favorites and always will be! They have no peers! When they quit it will be a sad day in my life!
RIP Chris Squire and Alan White
One of my favorite bass players of all time ! You will be missed ! RIP Chris ! My thoughts & prayers go out to his family !
Now THAT is how you play a bass. RIP big man….
R.I.P. Chris Squire. Thanks for all the great bass playing.
Goodbye Chris. Thanks for all the magic and inspiration.
I couldn't imagine Yes without Squire.
They're a cover band now.
@@franktreppiedi2208 No ore Chris. No more Alan. No more Rick. No more Jon! I agree with you: only a (good) cover band.
Soooo classic! Just Chris and Alan, the heart beat of Yes, jammin'. Mr. Squire was the greatest bass player of all time!..... RIP.
RIP Chris, you were a trail blazer, and a lot fun to watch live.
What a Performer Chris is! Impecable and Charismatic as always, smiling and full of emotion! WHAT A MASTER of the stage! King of the Bass guitar to this day!
dude, that tone is so deep and rich, if you saw him live it would rip you apart...
chris GENTLE GIANT. thank you .
I MISS YOU CHRIS YOU WERE THE BEST IN MY BOOK!!!! I HOPE ALL THE GREAT MUSICIANS WHO HAVE PASSED ARE TOGETHER HAVING THE BIGGEST JAM SESSION
One of my favorite songs - hidden champion. Chris, you the best!
absolutely, stupendously, extraordinarily performer... Chris Squire we miss you Chris, eternally yours
Loved his music went to many Yes conerts he was always there, I got the honor of meeting him, a great man who will always be remembered!
chris re-wrote the role of the bass, and his Rick re-defined what a rock bass should sound like.
truly an original, the Master. love that guy ta bits.
Squire is the backbone of Yes.
My favorite Yes video on UA-cam. Squire was the core of the band and can't be replaced
Chris Squire, pure genius, brilliant as always. My best wishes and good luck for him in his battle against leukemia, hope he'll soon be recovered.
....on the silent wings of freedom!
No Words can really explain how weird it is to be in a world without Chris. Sure do miss you man.
Absolutelly Fantastic!
Takes me back to Tormato album. Chris enjoyed throwing notes out to the crowd...and then came the smile. Saw YES at Arco in Sacramento, he broke out with Amazing Grace and the place thundered. Never forget that sound and power.
One of my faves, for sure!
And let us not overlook Alan White pounding away in the background!
Love YES so damn much!!!
Tutto molto bello un grande spettacolo ❤🌹....MEMORIES
Vorrei sapere il titolo dell'album live di questo fantastico brano grazie....
Sempre e per sempre....YES....❤
I learned this song in 1980 in honor of John Lennon, and I played it in front of The Dakota in Feb. 2005.
Squire's definitely going to be missed.
It's actually part of the pickup on Chris' Bass. A horseshoe pickup.
On the regular 4001's and 4003's, it's just a plastic cover, and most people remove them.
No one is as great as Chris! R.I.P., my hero.
Who were the best 'rhythm section' of all time? Yep, Chris and Alan
Still love you Chris…
my favorite rock bassist of all time, hands down. With all due respect to Sir Paul McCartney, who's melodic and propulsive bass-playing was the inspiration for Squire.
Chris sei sempre nei nostri cuori r.i.p.❤
the Master of the Rickenbacker bass...no other bass player defined an instrument quite like he does.
God I miss this dude !
@elechliter If you look, Chris Squire doesn't ALWAYS play with a pick - he chooses the sound and attack he requires.
The Master !!
ACTUALLY it's an aluminum "bell". Fenders also have them. They attenuate some frequencies so the instruments blend better, but they don't mute the natural string vibration. Studio players and orchestra players keep them, but most hard rockers take them off.
Epic....this what we loved....bring a big smile to my face😍😃😀
The master.
dyhanendra is correct about the horseshoe pickup, they are a feature of older 4001s Rickenbacker basses and reissues such as the 4001v63 or the 4001c64s. Modern rickenbacker basses have a similar looking pickup cover - but this can be taken off, the horseshoe cannot.
RIP Chris, RIP Alan.
Definitive version for me is his growling performance from Wembley 1978-10-28
it's called the 'horseshoe pickup'...taken from beauchamp's original pickup design from 1931. it's part of the pick-up..the strings reside inside the EMF of the pickup...the output of a horseshoe is like none other! they sell on eBay for $500-$800 nowadays..just the pick-up!
Actually that was James Jamerson who completely redefined the role of the bass in general.

Great!
Squire is my all time favorite båss player.. he really makes that RIcky sing
Well the capes do go back to the Yessongs days, and I like the Arthurian-Elvis thing he has on "Hold Out Your Hand" ("Eat this, Rick!"). He's tall...he can't help it. Height is useful for a bassist.
❤❤❤
The Master
QEPD el master de masters Chris Squire 😔
Boss Bass!
Man, I'm sorry I missed that one! Looks like it must have been a great show.
@stevezane , I hope your right! All but Rabin is in their 60's . If they do tour, GO!!!!!!!
Agreed! And so nice to see him not wearing a tent for a shirt.
: )
This is not On the Silent Wings of Freedom. This is The Fish!
It's both. He plays a tiny bit of The Fish at the very end.
What the heck is Squire doing to stay in shape? He looks better here than he did in the 70's. People often think that Anderson is essential to the Yes sound, but for me it has always been Squire, and his voice is as distinctive as Anderson's. (Not that I am snubbing Jon Anderson in any way, just trying to give Squire his due.)
no, its a pick-guard... its so you can rest your hand on something when playing with a pick as to not mute the string...
The one and only "Fish"
CS rules everyone!
What about Paul McCartney? He used a pick on a RIC, and I've heard that he's quite good. Do you know if Chris Squire got the idea about using the Pick on a Ric from Sir Paul? I know John Entwhistle also used a Ric, but most likely without a pic.
@rushrushrushfan There's nothing wrong with using a pick, Justin Chancellor uses only a pick and John Entwistle used a pick sometimes.
God must sounds like this
It's actually a TC chorus pedal.
Seemingly everyone loves this song yet the band refused/s to play it live. Aside from snippets of course. My dream Yes set list would probably have NONE of their "hits" on it...
Squire plays/played all the way up the neck! The strings on the other side of the fingers give harmonics.
stratosferici
What can I say? ...Chris and a ♥
Damn fine bass solo!
Hey Sarah Hutchinson....will this LIVE VERSION do?
aeropilot. Or his half mast kegs, size 17 Bovver Boots, bad taste stripey suits, and superhero capes, LOL
Chris put an album out with Steve Hackett. His singing is a lot better than 'Fish Out Of Water.
Son, what do you want to do when you grow up? Pointing at Chris I replied, "That." And I'm not making this up.
*I watched a few squire vids tonight and it seems that no one has commented at all since his death.
The first comment of this video is: i love Squire's sound
mCcARTNY = BRLIANT!!
The only fantastic bassist who plays with a pick!
But also Alan white......yes yes yes yes
Sir Paul...?
No bud, he's a legend on the bass.
Not saying he's the greatest player ever, but hi inspired a lot of people and cut his own path doing it.
what is that big thing looking like a pickup on his bass? also he influenced a lot Cliff Burton the best bassist ever to live in my humble opinion
is it just me or is the video out of sync with the audio track?
KICK ASS!!!!
Ugh, the delay sounds so off time. Chris Squire is still the shit though! Responsible for me wanting a Rick.
Haha, yeah.
lol.
Your name is 4001XBASS.
Anyway, I want a Rick because of Chris Squire, too.
what has this song got to do with john lennon?
Sir Paul never played bass consistently in a lead style.
pick guard... comes with all rickenbackers...
