I can remember when Newcastle drew with Tranmere 6-6 in the simod cup, I know David Kelly and I think it was Micky Quinn both got hattricks, this was a couple of years before I was a Newcastle fan, the game went to penalties but I don't know who won, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
@@historyoffootball87 Yes, but 44,000 I believe, were from Reading. It didn't capture the attention of the Luton public quite as much. One thing you have to remember is that back then, playing at Wembley was still considered something special. Only clubs that had made it to the FA Cup or League Cup finals had done so (the play-offs had only just started, and wouldn't be a final until a few years later). To see Reading at Wembley was unreal, especially to win the cup in that manner. The teams also put out their first teams for the competition - no squad rotation in those days, and Reading beat four top-flight teams to win the thing.
@@RevStickleback I was just the same with Bristol City in the FRT in 1986 and 1987. Those two finals created records for the highest attendances for a match between two 3rd Division clubs, 54,000 in 86 and 58,000 in 87. Then in 1988 Wolves and Burnley both in Division 4 basically filled Wembley.
As a foreigner had I never heard about this cup 😅 Interesting else how big cups are in UK else But I am so old that for me is the number one as cup team is Telford 🎉 I am so old I remember they beat Derby and I think they played against Man United
I think both this cup and the associate member cup sowed the seeds of the death of the love for cup football in England. Until then, the idea of a 'meaningless cup tie' didn't really exist, and cup matches, especially in the FA Cup, used to draw bigger crowds than league games.
Just ask any Bristol City fan if the Football League Trophy is a waste and they, as indeed will I, will remember great days out at Wembley in 1986 and 2015, and Cardiff 2003.
l always recall Cloughie collecting the trophy in 1989 after a great 4-3 victory over Everton.
Thanks for watching and commenting

Tranmere won 3-2 on penalties. It were back in 1991.
I like the backing music. What’s it called?
It's just the free music you get off the Kinemaster app. I don't think it has a name.
I remember Reading winning the 1987/88 Simod Cup 4-1 against Luton Town. 40,000 Reading fans at Wembley
There was 61,740 for that one.

This was great. Should be brought back but I’m the only one who thinks this lol
I don't think they will ever bring it back. Players these days are complaining there are too many games already.

It hasn't been around for 31 year now so a lot of people either forgot or don't remember it.
❤

There were a couple other competitions I have talked about before like the Watney Cup which were also a bit pointless and had low attendances.
