When I was younger, I remember seeing something on TV about humming birds and how it was impossible to film the wings flapping with a camera because they couldn't film fast enough, now we have the technology to do it :D
Did you see that we now have a camera capable of 'filming' the passing by of a beam of light? Seems kind of impossible, but here it was on this channel.ua-cam.com/video/7Ys_yKGNFRQ/v-deo.htmlsi=dVfjskxfPJsQ-6Te ua-cam.com/video/7Ys_yKGNFRQ/v-deo.htmlsi=dVfjskxfPJsQ-6Te
I take your point, however I could see it as being akin to looking through thin fabric or one-way mirrors, in that while it may look opague from the outside it is substantially easier to see through from the side without the light source.
That bird video is perhaps the most gorgeous video I’ve watched on this channel. The augur hawk flying to the perch made me think, “this is what people depict angel wings after.”
Most things are easier to measure than a hummingbird's wings. For things not easy to measure, usually it involved a lot of complicated maths. An ancient Egyptian philosopher calculated a pretty good estimate of the circumference of the planet by comparing the length of the shadows of two obelisks that were the same height but on opposite sides of Egypt.
They didn't measure things that fast. The best they could do was guess, and we were wrong about all sorts of fast things until high speed photography revealed the truth.
Dip the tips of their wings in paint, place a vertically-scrolling-paper-machine with constant set speed next to a source of nectar. The bird will paint a wave on the paper and all you have to do is count the ups and downs per distance and convert it into flaps/second. Given the high speed of the flap all you need is a fraction of a second where their wings touch the paper. Give it a couple tries and you should have a good estimate of the flaps/second. Done!
One of the classic things we got wrong before photography is horses (and other animals) galloping. This can be seen in pre-photography horse racing paintings.
The eagle blinking was so cool, it got me intrigue. Have Gav and Dan ever filmed a dog drinking water? I've always been curious how they get water, and how much, with their tongues. I've tried and I don't get a lot, but my dog's tongue kinda looks like a thick spoon, so...?
I like to see how the production value goes up between the youtube shows you guys do and your normal videos. There's a lot more sound effects and music and your guys' sentences are shortened to say the most information in the least amount of words. Good job team!
This is one of my favorite "informational" episodes so far, as I feel we got some actual facts from the expert. This is not a slam on the previous experts--I just don't feel like some of them were given enough of a chance to contribute to the conversation. This episode feels like an improvement.
GAGAGGAGAGAGA I just saw something very UNPRETTY! I looked in the mirror! GAGAGAG!!! But I am the supreme UA-camr of this generation so it is all wonderful! Thanks for listening, dear facterinoi
We get hummers here every year and I am always super excited when they show up, raise their young and then depart in September for warmer climates. They are the most amazing animal to me just watching them hover and fly around is truly a gift. And the sword fighting they do is very common once others show up at the feeder. I have coined the term "Hummer Wars" when they get into fighting mode LOL

The numbers I've always read about the speed of their flaps always have seemed outlandish to me but now I can see it with my own eyes. Amazing.
flapping around at the speed sound got places to go gotta protect my flower
Won't fly around, only one is enough
Stay out of my way or I will divebomb you
I apperciate this so much.
Gavin finally films something with a bigger beak than him
Disco Crisis Are you kidding me? His beak is bigger than the entire hummingbird.
You have to give it to Gav tho, even relative to body size it's not too far off.
Shots fired.
just wait until he films Zlatan Ibrahimovic.. now THATS a beak
Doesn't stop him from dating models though

You'd expect the eagle not to be in such a rush about blinking given the see-through eyelids
Tom Chaney I can’t imagine those are as clear to see through as they’re claiming.
I take your point, however I could see it as being akin to looking through thin fabric or one-way mirrors, in that while it may look opague from the outside it is substantially easier to see through from the side without the light source.
I don't think they are completely clear, but they can still see through a bit
Its about keeping the eyes wet so they can continue to see.
I'm loving this Planet Slow Mo! Cool footage and then you learn something new!

Loved this segment! Glad you added a touch of the wildlife photography to the mix!
I personally think humming birds are the cutest birds ever
Hummingbirds are such amazing Little Birds
Hummingbirds are the only vertebrate that can fly backwards. I'm enjoying this series very much.
They’re just like little tiny fighter jets! :D
Nah, they are what fighter jets aspire to be when they grow up. ;-)
Now I kinda want to see a bunch of birds flying through the air with 'Danger Zone' playing in the background.
F-15 Eagle, not F-15 hummingbird lol, but they are a pretty cool bird..
Jets can't go backwards and up and down vertically on a complete effortless whim

Dan definitely lost that blinking contest, but the eagle was only about twice as fast, interesting that it was pretty similar timing.
Humming birds are the sharks of the sky

Compared to The Super Slow Show, this more low-key approach to a higher budget Originals series is exceptional. The guys are really in their element.
