I am from Canada and grew up in the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean, so I've flown the Twin Otter many times in both countries, from island hopping to the artic. I had a relative who worked on the original aircraft. It's a fantastic utility plane and I've never felt safer on such a versatile rugged aircraft in such conditions. It's reliable. I get its smaller than people are used to, but it's very safe and dependable.

Would I fly in such a small plane? Yes, I would. Being in the Swiss Army I have been lucky to flying in a Pilatus Porter (it was a kind of sightseeing flight of the southern Swiss Alps).
Thank you, Paul, for sharing your very interesting video with us.

I like the description of the Otter as "cozy, boutique, and brimming with character" as opposed to crammed, coffin-esque, with a sardine can atmosphere. Looked like fun, though; gorgeous bay. Great vid.

Well, it's a utility plane built for versatility and reliability on relatively short flights. It is a pet peeve when some travellers expect every plane to be Emirates first class and the comfiest planes. I don't love when people judge planes based on comfort rather than performance, efficiency, safety, engineering, the things that matter. That's also why I get pissed when people constantly bash the CRJ-200. Sure, the CRJ-200's not comfortable, but that doesn't mean its a bad aircraft! It's made for regional travel!

Paul, loved the video, as I’m watching now on the Isles of Scilly. The bit you missed (for all av geeks) is that you can walk across the runway on St Marys. A light and siren warn you of approaching aircraft. It’s always fun to be there when there is an arrival! Flown the Twin Otter a few times, but the old and now new helicopter are another experience agin (plus extra 5kg luggage allowance).

You should go to Alderney (channel Islands), you fly there on a Dornier 228NG, not a very common plane. And the airport is absolutely tiny, and lost in time, interior looks the same as it was in the 70s or thereabouts !

Loved the video, finally got to see the Isles of Scilly. Packed in a little plane going to and from it.
From what i could see those isles are beautiful!
Detail: did you know the Netherlands were for 335 years (1651 - 1986) at war with the Isles of Scilly?
I didn't until a couple of months ago!
Luckily not a single shot was ever fired and nobody died because of this war. It was the longest war ever.
BTW it seems the inhabitants don't like to be called the Scilly Isles but like to hear the Isles of Scilly.
Probably because Scilly sounds as silly.
Thank you for uploading this video!

Did this trip last year and an absolute pleasure to fly so easily. You can take your dog too and save a lot of time versus going by the boat particularly if it's a short stay on the Island or day trip. The MV Scillonian is a flat bottomed boat so it can rest in Harbour at low tide so is more prone to lurching or rolling in a swell.

I flew on the twin otter on the same crossing to St.Mary,s at the end of February this year the planes seats are very small but the flight is Fantastic much more exciting than flying on big planes and you see and hear the pilots as the cockpit isn't sealed. The cost of £109.50 each way from lands end is a little pricey but Everyone should do it!! And it saves 2.5 hours on a bumpy ferry !!

  • @jamesrichardson476

I did the trip on an Islander a few years ago - we were all weighed to ensure an evenly distributed load. If you go back to St Mary's, do the walk round the coast, which you can comfortably do in a day. The path will take you across the bottom of the airport runway, but you must obey the signals and not cross when a plane is landing or taking off 🙂. The isles of Scilly are very beautiful and well worth a visit but beware, going and staying there is not cheap but it is worthwhile.

Yes the Isles of Scilly offer some of the most undiscovered places to visit off the coast of England. In my opinion St Marys is ok, but going across to Tresco you will find is so different. But one day later, this same helicopter crashed into the sea and all dead (it did not float as they said it should)- Of course, when I returned some 10 days later to Penzance, I took the Ferry. Used the camping all these days which was very good and visited all islands and the famous lighthouse too, when it was still inhabited. Very good: the Tresco Gardens. You will need the whole day. @@Paul_Lucas 1964 was the last Rapide flight at least by BEA and my flights were in 62-63 (photoed with my teddy bear on one occasion). They were replaced by the SR61 helicopters that lasted until 2012.

Looks a fabulous trip, Paul! Did you travel to Penzance on GWR and enjoy that train ride too? I have seen your video where you did that a couple of years ago.
My ambition for a Twin Otter trip? The seaplane version from Male to one of the Maldives Soneva resorts - Soneva operates 2 Twin Otters privately, configured in "business class". 10 seats only.

What type of camera do you use?

Hi thank you for a wonderful video, I am planning a day trip this July but I am worried about taking my camera with 600mm zoom lens, it says day trips can't use the hold to put my rucksack yet in your video you said you did, are they accommodating for this? I am also planning fly out sail back (hoping the weather holds) Regards, Simon

They checked my rucksack as it was too large to be carried in the cabin. Just carry your camera round your neck and you’ll be fine.
