After suffering a stroke in 1975 which paralysed one side of his body, he continued playing and touring and even recorded one final album. If you really want to blow your mind, listen to him circular breathe whilst playing multiple saxes on "Prepare thyself to deal a miracle" - ridiculous! The man was a genius in every sense possible.
My new boyfriend took me, I knew nothing about jazz at the time - he introduced me. I didn't know where we were going... Rahsaan came on and after a while his cheeks blew up like a basketball while he played 5 instruments at once! I thought I was hallucinating. It was extraordinary and beautiful and it is etched in my memory like it was one bright moment ago.
greatly missed and greatly underrated by many. he was unique, passionate and talented by the highest standards. must love or hate him, but can not ignore him. he changed my concept about music, about jazz. he was a true explorer and leader.
Thanks so much for posting this. Once again Raitre shows how Italian TV was lightyears above American media because they filmed all these great jazz festtivals and broadcast them, while in the US we had Lawrence Welk and other lowbrow crap. Without the European love for Jazz, we would have no record of incredible performances like this.
Oh man, Rahsaaaaaaaan. Here's a man who knew exactly what he wanted to do with his time, and he didn't waste a second of it. All these guys are so cookin.
I first heard "Volunteered Slavery" way back in the late 60's (if I remember correctly) ...haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Nobody believes me when I tell them about Kirk's ability to play 3 or more instruments at one time. Thanks for the upload...it's great !
The Rahsaan is in top form here. There never was and never will be anything like him. Words can't express.

The amazing RRK and his band live @ Bologna, Nov. 9, 1973
to see rhasaan at the vanguard in the seventies was an unbelievable experience---itll live with me forever
ROLL ON KIRK!
That was awesome, I've never seen him play with another sax player before. I love how he worked part of "Seasons" into his solo.

Words are not sufficient to describe his genius.
